Book Synopsis New Dimensions of Connectivity in the Asia-Pacific by : Christopher Findlay
Download or read book New Dimensions of Connectivity in the Asia-Pacific written by Christopher Findlay and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-11-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no bigger policy agenda in the East Asian region than connectivity. Costs of international connectivity are indeed falling, in the movement of goods, services, people and data, leading to greater flows, and to the reorganisation of business and the emergence of new forms of international transactions. There are second-round effects on productivity and growth, and on equity and inclusiveness. Participating in trade across borders involves significant set-up costs and, if these costs are lowered due to falling full costs of connectivity, more firms will participate, which is a driver of productivity growth and innovation at the firm level. Connectivity investments are linked to poverty reduction, since they reduce the costs of participating in markets. This volume includes chapters on the consequences of changes in both physical and digital connectivity for trade, for the location of economic activity, for forms of doing business, the growth of e-commerce in particular, and for the delivery of new services, especially in the financial sector. A study of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is also included. These studies are preceded by an assessment of the connectivity performance in the Asia-Pacific region and followed by a discussion of impediments to investment in projects that contribute to productivity. The collection as a whole provides the basis for a series of recommendations for regional cooperation. The Pacific Trade and Development (PAFTAD) conference series has been at the forefront of analysing challenges facing the economies of East Asia and the Pacific since its first meeting in Tokyo in January 1968.
Book Synopsis New Dimensions of Economic Globalization by : Ramkishen S Rajan
Download or read book New Dimensions of Economic Globalization written by Ramkishen S Rajan and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-05-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of South-South FDI flows, particularly those arising from multinational companies from China and India, has generated considerable interest among policymakers, academics and the popular press in recent times. This phenomenon raises several questions such as: What is behind the rise of such intra-regional investment flows? What is the magnitude of such flows, and can they be expected to persist/accelerate over time? What are the challenges faced by emerging market multinationals and the future prospects of intra-Asian FDI flows? This book, written by top scholars from academia, international organizations as well as think tanks, consists of a set of papers focusing on these issues. The book is unique in its coverage — focusing on China, India and Southeast Asia rather than limiting itself to a sub-regional or country-specific focus. The chapters in this book highlight important policy issues but are supported with relevant data and empirics, with rigorous empirical analysis being applied to important practical policy issues. The book also provides pertinent overviews of recent research on the questions explored. While the chapters have been crafted to be able to stand up to academic scrutiny, they are also written in a manner that makes them easily accessible to all policymakers, students and business/financial journalists who are interested in Asia and in the emergence of South-South FDI flows.

Book Synopsis Urban Disaster Resilience by : David Sanderson
Download or read book Urban Disaster Resilience written by David Sanderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerating urbanization worldwide means more urban-centered disasters. Floods, earthquakes, storms and conflicts affecting densely populated areas produce significant losses in lives, livelihoods and the built environment, especially in comparison to rural areas. Poor urban dwellers, almost always the most vulnerable, too often bear the brunt. Aid agencies and urban professionals have been slowly adapting to these new conditions, but older models and practices hinder the most effective engagements. Drawing directly from the experiences of urban disasters in the Philippines, Chile, India, Thailand, Iraq, Haiti and Nepal, among other countries, Urban Disaster Resilience brings to light new collaborations and techniques for addressing the challenges of urban disasters in the coming years. Chapters range from country-specific case studies to more synthetic frameworks in order to promote innovative thinking and practical solutions. Edited by David Sanderson, Jerold S. Kayden and Julia Leis, this book is a crucial read for humanitarian and disaster specialists, urban planners and designers, architects, landscape architects, housing and economic development professionals, real estate developers, private business managers and students interested in the subject, whether based in non-governmental organizations, local, state or national governments, international agencies, private firms, or the academy.

Book Synopsis The Digital Multinational by : Satish Nambisan
Download or read book The Digital Multinational written by Satish Nambisan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How multinational companies can use digital technology to compete in a world where business is driven by the forces of both globalization and deglobalization. Digital technology has put globalization on steroids; multinational companies now account for one-third of world GDP and one-fourth of world employment. And yet complicating this story of unchecked global capitalism are two contradictory forces. Even as advances in digital technology enable borderless markets, a new nationalism has emerged, reviving protectionism and railing against digital colonialism. In The Digital Multinational, management experts Satish Nambisan and Yadong Luo examine how companies can adopt a dual strategy to cope with this new normal: harnessing the power of digital technology while adapting to the geopolitical realities of particular markets. Key to success, Nambisan and Luo explain, is the notion of tight and loose coupling to characterize the relationship of the digital multinational to its global partners and subsidiaries. Identifying the tightness-looseness requirements of global business connectivity leads to successful business strategy. Drawing on real-world examples that include Burberry’s entrance into the Chinese market, Unilever’s AI-powered global talent marketplace, and the Vocal for Local movement in India, they develop a typology of global business contexts; discuss digital strategies for entering new markets, establishing digital platforms, managing globally dispersed activities, and pursuing innovation; and explain how these strategies can be part of a business leader’s toolkit. The Digital Multinational is an essential guide to competing in a business world driven by both globalization and deglobalization.
