Book Synopsis Fine Sediment Dynamics in the Marine Environment by : Johan C. Winterwerp
Download or read book Fine Sediment Dynamics in the Marine Environment written by Johan C. Winterwerp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-05 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cohesive sediment, or mud, is encountered in most water bodies throughout the world. Often mud is a valuable resource, synonymous with fertile land, enriching the natural environment and used as an important building material. Yet mud also hinders navigation and consequently, dredging operations have been carried out since ancient times to safeguard navigation. Unfortunately, many mud deposits are now contaminated, endangering the eco-system and increasing the costs of dredging operations. The transport and fate of mud in the environment are still poorly understood and the need for basic research remains. This text contains the proceedings of the INTERCOH-2000 conference on progress in cohesive sediment research. It was the sixth in a series of conferences initially started by Professor Ashish Mehta in 1984 as a "Workshop on Cohesive Sediment Dynamics with Special Reference to the Processes in Estuaries". During these conferences the character of the first workshop has always been maintained, that is, small scale and dedicated to the physical and engineering aspects of cohesive sediments, without parallel sessions, but with ample time for discussions during and after the presentations, and followed by a book of proceedings containing thoroughly reviewed papers. INTERCOH-2000 was integrated with the final workshop of the COSINUS project. This project was carried out as a part of the European MAST-3 programme, and almost all European cohesive sediment workers were involved. INTERCOH-2000 focused on the behaviour and modelling of concentrated benthic suspensions, i.e. high-concentrated near-bed suspensions of cohesive sediment. Special attention was paid to: sediment - turbulence interaction; flocculation and settling velocity; high-concentrated mud suspensions; processes in the bed - consolidation; processes on the bed - erosion; field observations on mud dynamics; instrumentation; and numerical modelling.

Book Synopsis Sediment Transport Research - Further Recent Advances by : Andrew J. Manning
Download or read book Sediment Transport Research - Further Recent Advances written by Andrew J. Manning and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-08-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effective governance and administration of many aquatic and terrestrial environments requires a detailed understanding of sediment transport and its behavioral dynamics. This has both environmental and economic implications, especially where there is any anthropogenic involvement. Sedimentary processes such as erosion, scour, deposition, and consolidation can fluctuate depending on whether their compositional matrix is purely cohesive, noncohesive, or a combination of both types. With many contributing factors, the prediction of sedimentary movement is often made using numerical modeling tools, as they can estimate the various spatial and temporal fluxes. However, due to the complex behavior of natural sediments, scientists and other specialists continue to conduct research into the many aspects that influence sediment transport. Sediment Transport Research - Further Recent Advances is a book that draws on the most recent world-class scientific research on sediment transport topics, including computational fluid dynamics, numerical modeling, particle properties and characteristics, beach morphology, soil erosion, flocculation processes, sand nourishment, geomorphology, water quality aspects, sedimentary-related legislation, and many more. The research was carried out by researchers who specialize in sediment transport and related processes.
Book Synopsis Fluvial Hydrodynamics by : Subhasish Dey
Download or read book Fluvial Hydrodynamics written by Subhasish Dey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state-of-the-art in fluvial hydrodynamics can be examined only through a careful exploration of the theoretical development and applied engineering technology. The book is primarily focused, since most up-to-date research findings in the field are presented, on the research aspects that involve a comprehensive knowledge of sediment dynamics in turbulent flows. It begins with the fundamentals of hydrodynamics and particle motion followed by turbulence characteristics related to sediment motion. Then, the sediment dynamics is analysed from a classical perspective by applying the mean bed shear approach and additionally incorporating a statistical description for the role of turbulence. The work finally examines the local scour problems at hydraulic structures and scale models. It is intended to design as a course textbook in graduate / research level and a guide for the field engineers as well, keeping up with modern technological developments. Therefore, as a simple prerequisite, the background of the readers should have a basic knowledge in hydraulics in undergraduate level and an understanding of fundamentals of calculus.

Book Synopsis Residual Currents and Long-term Transport by : Ralph T. Cheng
Download or read book Residual Currents and Long-term Transport written by Ralph T. Cheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-09-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries, bays and contiguous coastal seas are the world's most valuable, and yet most vulnerable marine ecosystems. Fundamental to the protection and management of these important resources is an understand- ing of the physical processes involved which affect the circulation, mixing, and transport of salt, nutrients and sediment. Residual Currents and Long-Term Transport processes appear to have direct control over freshwater inflows, contaminant loadings, dispersion and transport of sediments and nutrients, and causes of declining living resources. This volume provides a comprehensive and up-to-date summary of the research results on these processes in estuaries and bays. Contributions from ten countries include results based on theoretical formulations, analyses of field data, numerical models and case studies.
