Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science includes those parts of chemistry and physics that deal with the properties of materials. It encompasses four classes of materials, the study of each of which may be considered a separate field: metals; ceramics; polymers and composites. Materials science is often referred to as materials science and engineering because it has many applications. Industrial applications of materials science include processing techniques (casting, rolling, welding, ion implantation, crystal growth, thin-film deposition, sintering, glassblowing, etc.), analytical techniques (electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, nuclear microscopy (HEFIB) etc.), materials design, and cost/benefit tradeoffs in industrial production of materials. This book presents new research directions in a very new field which happens to be an old field as well.

Volume 37 begins by discussing the main properties of poly (methyl methacrylate) bone cements used for orthopaedic surgery. In particular, emphasis is given to the fillers used to modify the solid phase of acrylic formulations, and this strategy is related to changes in their mechanical, biological, and clinical properties. Following this, the authors describe studies on the radiopaque agents of bone cements from 1960 to today. This research is divided into several time frames: 1960-1990, 1990-2000, 2000-2010, and 2010-2018. An outlook for the future studies is also provided. A recent literature analysis in the field of spray pyrolysis production methods is presented, including the respective equipment requirements and the versatility of the materials. Examples of the application of ultrasonic spray nebulizers, laser and plasma atomizers are also provided. Next, a facile spray pyrolysis from a precursor solution with an ammonium additive is introduced to prepare porous nanostructured vanadium pentoxides. The correlation between porous structures and electrochemical properties of the PN-V2O5 electrodes was systematically investigated on rechargeable lithium batteries. Furthermore, some challenges are presented on the design of porous materials produced by spray pyrolysis for the application of lithium sulfur batteries. The authors discuss research on non-contact and non-destructive systems that excite surface acoustic waves using pulsed lasers and detect surface acoustic waves using laser Doppler detectors to observe the changes in the physical properties of the substrate surface. The concluding study focuses on the availability of modified epoxidized palm oil as pressure sensitive adhesives in medical applications. Epoxidized palm oil has been modified to two modifications of acrylation and maleination. Thus, there are requirements need to be met for pressure sensitive adhesive formulation before the curing process.

Book excerpt: In order to achieve the revolutionary new defense capabilities offered by materials science and engineering, innovative management to reduce the risks associated with translating research results will be needed along with the R&D. While payoff is expected to be high from the promising areas of materials research, many of the benefits are likely to be evolutionary. Nevertheless, failure to invest in more speculative areas of research could lead to undesired technological surprises. Basic research in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science will provide the seeds for potentially revolutionary technologies later in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most recent updates in the field of photon and optical materials research. It is devoted to various interdisciplinary subjects such as fundamental photon physics, bio and medical photon physics, ultrafast non-linear optics, quasiparticle excitation and spectroscopy, coherent mid-infrared (IR) light sources, functional optoelectronic materials and optical fibres, and quantum nano-structured devices for various important technological applications. It contains 19 authoritative peer-reviewed chapters regarding experimental and theoretical research in these fields, contributed by young scientists and engineers (assistant or associate professor level) along with well-established experts. The response of materials to electromagnetic fields, namely light-matter interaction, has been of special concern in fundamental optical sciences. The ability to fabricate and/or engineer new materials and structures is giving rise to revolutionary changes in the field, which also includes soft condensed matter and nanoscale systems. On the other hand, significant demand for new coherent light sources at mid-IR ranges has caused new laser technologies to flourish, which utilise innovative optical materials and quantum structures. Important mid-IR applications include IR countermeasures, optical telecommunications, broadband Internet, environmental monitoring, remote sensing of chemical and biological species, minimally invasive medical surgery and medical diagnosis, and direct imaging of biological structures and relevant processes. Most of the chapters presented in this book address key issues on light-matter interaction in various systems and the next generation of light sources aiming at practical applications. Included with these applications are some fundamental topics such as photon Bose-Einstein condensation, vacuum polarisation field, and polarisational bremsstrahlung. This collection of fresh updates on such stimulating areas makes this book quite unique, as it provides an in-depth review on the most recent progress as well as suggesting future research directions.

Book excerpt: The report assesses the current state of chemistry and chemical engineering at the interface with materials science and identifies challenges for research. Recent advances are blurring the distinction between chemistry and materials science and are enabling the creation of new materials that, to date, have only been predicted by theory. These advances include a greater ability to construct materials from molecular components, to design materials for a desired function, to understand molecular "self-assembly, and to improve processes by which the material is "engineered" into the final product.

Book excerpt: "Materials science influences all aspects of society, including the current challenges of environmental issues and of sustainable energy. It also impacts our daily life, because it studies common materials like nanomaterials, composites, hybrid materials, glass, and plastic. Materials science tries to improve these materials in ways such as adding scratch resistance to glass. This science also commonly studies composite materials. This book was motivated by the desire to broaden knowledge and use this knowledge to develop new materials for the utility of mankind. There are innumerable tools currently available that focus on specific knowledge that can largely serve the scientific community. However, this book also explores social issues and outlines applications of different materials. Additionally, this book presents research-based practices related to the usage of advanced materials and covers the application of nanomaterials in solar energy and medicine. The didactic approach of this book is perfectly suited to science and engineering students, as well as to biologists, physicists, or chemists who are not specialized in materials but who, nevertheless, wish to learn about this discipline. This work will also be appreciated by specialists in a particular aspect of materials science wishing to have a global view on the subject and to position their activity in a wider context"--
