Book excerpt: The purpose of this text is to present new examples of LP-spaces for 1 ≤ P ≤ ∞. This work has three reasons of interest. First, of course, it provides new LPspaces. Secondly, because certain constructions are based on new ideas and techniques with possibly other applications. Finally, especially in chapters four and five, crucial use is made of certain probabilistic results which have an independent importance.

Unique in its sole dedication, this book explores Lebesgue spaces, distribution functions and nonincreasing rearrangement. Moreover, it also deals with weak, Lorentz and the more recent variable exponent and grand Lebesgue spaces with considerable detail to the proofs. The book also touches on basic harmonic analysis in the aforementioned spaces. An appendix is given at the end of the book giving it a self-contained character. This work is ideal for teachers, graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: Pierre Grisvard, one of the most distinguished French mathematicians, died on April 22, 1994. A Conference was held in November 1994 out of which grew the invited articles contained in this volume. All of the papers are related to functional analysis applied to partial differential equations, which was Grisvard's specialty. Indeed his knowledge of this area was extremely broad. He began his career as one of the very first students of Jacques Louis Lions, and in 1965, he presented his "State Thesis" on interpolation spaces, using in particular, spectral theory for linear operators in Banach spaces. After 1970, he became a specialist in the study of optimal regularity for par tial differential equations with boundary conditions. He studied singulari ties coming from coefficients, boundary conditions, and mainly non-smooth domains, and left a legacy of precise results which have been published in journals and books. Pierre Grisvard spent most of his career as a full professor at the University of Nice, where he started in 1967. For shorter or longer periods, he visited several foreign countries, and collaborated with some of the most famous mathematicians in his field. He was also an excellent organizer and directed a large number of Ph.D. students. Finally, this volume contains a bibliography of Grisvard's works as well as one paper which he wrote and which has not been published before.

Book excerpt: Written by a distinguished specialist in functional analysis, this book presents a comprehensive treatment of the history of Banach spaces and (abstract bounded) linear operators. Banach space theory is presented as a part of a broad mathematics context, using tools from such areas as set theory, topology, algebra, combinatorics, probability theory, logic, etc. Equal emphasis is given to both spaces and operators. The book may serve as a reference for researchers and as an introduction for graduate students who want to learn Banach space theory with some historical flavor.

This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Problems and Recent Methods in Operator Theory, held at the University of Memphis, Memphis, TN, from October 15–16, 2015 and the AMS Special Session on Advances in Operator Theory and Applications, in Memory of James Jamison, held at the University of Memphis, Memphis, TN, from October 17–18, 2015. Operator theory is at the root of several branches of mathematics and offers a broad range of challenging and interesting research problems. It also provides powerful tools for the development of other areas of science including quantum theory, physics and mechanics. Isometries have applications in solid-state physics. Hermitian operators play an integral role in quantum mechanics very much due to their “nice” spectral properties. These powerful connections demonstrate the impact of operator theory in various branches of science. The articles in this volume address recent problems and research advances in operator theory. Highlighted topics include spectral, structural and geometric properties of special types of operators on Banach spaces, with emphasis on isometries, weighted composition operators, multi-circular projections on function spaces, as well as vector valued function spaces and spaces of analytic functions. This volume gives a succinct overview of state-of-the-art techniques from operator theory as well as applications to classical problems and long-standing open questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of Toeplitz matrices and operators is a vital part of modern analysis, with applications to moment problems, orthogonal polynomials, approximation theory, integral equations, bounded- and vanishing-mean oscillations, and asymptotic methods for large structured determinants, among others. This friendly introduction to Toeplitz theory covers the classical spectral theory of Toeplitz forms and Wiener–Hopf integral operators and their manifestations throughout modern functional analysis. Numerous solved exercises illustrate the results of the main text and introduce subsidiary topics, including recent developments. Each chapter ends with a survey of the present state of the theory, making this a valuable work for the beginning graduate student and established researcher alike. With biographies of the principal creators of the theory and historical context also woven into the text, this book is a complete source on Toeplitz theory.
