Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adoption of nuclear power revolutionized submarine design and means that vessels can stay underwater for months, trailing the enemy or training weapons on land targets from secret positions, “always there, never seen.” Jim Christley, a former submariner, explores here the influence of Admiral Hyman Rickover in cautiously introducing these stealthy machines of war, and frankly discusses the power and perils of using nuclear reactors at sea. Using unique and detailed artwork, he outlines the many evolving aspects of design within the submarine classes, from the very first nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus, to the classes under construction even now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly detailed book, naval historian Edward Hampshire reveals the fascinating history of the nuclear-powered attack submarines built and operated by the Soviet Union in the Cold War, including each class of these formidable craft as they developed throughout the Cold War period. The November class, which were the Soviet Union's first nuclear submarines, had originally been designed to fire a single enormous nuclear-tipped torpedo but were eventually completed as boats firing standard torpedoes. The Alfa class were perhaps the most remarkable submarines of the Cold War: titanium-hulled (which was light and strong but extremely expensive and difficult to weld successfully), crewed with only thirty men due to considerable automation and 30% faster than any US submarines, they used a radical liquid lead-bismuth alloy in the reactor plant. The Victor class formed the backbone of the Soviet nuclear submarine fleet in the 1970s and 1980s, as hunter-killer submarines began to focus on tracking and potentially destroying NATO ballistic missile submarines. The Sierra classes were further titanium-hulled submarines and the single Mike-class submarine was an experimental type containing a number of innovations. Finally, the Akula class were being constructed as the Cold War ended, and these boats form the mainstay of the Russian nuclear attack submarine fleet today. This book explores the design, development, and deployment of each of these classes in detail, offering an unparalleled insight into the submarines which served the Soviet Union throughout the Cold War period. The text is supported by stunning illustrations, photographs and diagrams of the submarines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy ruled the waves in the 20th century. It met the challenge of World War II and emerged as the greatest navy in the world. And it has worked hard ever since to maintain its mastery of the seas. No navy on earth is its equal or even comes close. It owes its continued dominance, in part, to its submarines and the submariners who man them. About the start of the 21st century, however, both China and Russia expanded their submarine production. They now pose a threat to the U.S. Navy’s undersea superiority. Today, the Navy stands ready to meet any new undersea challenges from potential adversaries. A new underwater strike force has joined the fleet—the Virginia-class new attack submarines. They are designed to keep the Navy’s edge in undersea warfighting. Each boat—as submariners call them—represents engineering and technology elevated to the threshold of perfection. Adversaries beware!

Book excerpt: Here is a concise, readable, and fully-illustrated account of how the modern submarine fleets came to be, from the very first underwater vessel that crossed the Thames in 1620, to the ultra-computerized nuclear submarine that functions as the strategic linchpin for most of today's advanced navies. Including a detailed portrait of life aboard a modern submarine, this fascinating book will appeal to any readers of naval or military history, and especially to the legions of submarine enthusiasts. This new edition of The Submarine Book is updated with a new chapter that speaks to the post-Cold-War environment of the Russian navy and the tragic loss of the Russian submarine Kursk.

Virginia— the first in the most technologically advanced new class of U.S. attack submarines—sets sail, even as the Navy’s high-tech submarine program falls under attack from a Congress ready to cut military spending. But a threat no one anticipated is gliding silently through dangerous waters. A rogue Kilo-class submarine built by a shadowy and powerful ally has become the latest weapon in al Qaeda’s terrorist arsenal. The submarine’s brutal strikes have created a volatile hostage situation in the Pacific . . . and have left hundreds of people dead. This new and stealthy terrorist threat must be eliminated before more innocent lives are lost. But the officers, crew, and Navy SEALs aboard the Virginia will face more than they anticipated in the turbulent waters of the South China Sea—as one untried American sub races toward an explosive confrontation with a cunning, and ruthless enemy.

According to the Navy, these purchases will allow it to maintain its force structure goals and the current submarine industrial base. As part of our efforts to assist in the oversight of major weapon systems acquisition programs, we reviewed (1) the status of the NSSN development program, (2) current information on the antisubmarine warfare threat, and (3) the Navy's plans to model the NSSN'S survivability. We are providing the results of our review for your use in oversight of the NSSN program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Navy is currently procuring one Virginia (SSN-774) class attack nuclearpowered submarine (SSN) per year. Each submarine currently costs about $2.4 billion. The FY2006-FY2011 Future Years Defense Plan (FYDP) submitted in February 2005 proposes maintaining the one-per-year procurement rate through FY2011 rather than increasing it two per year in FY2009, as previously planned. A 30-year Navy force-level projection submitted in March 2005 shows the SSN force declining from more than 50 boats today to 37 to 41 boats by FY2035. Submarine supporters are concerned that the Navy and DOD are not placing adequate emphasis on attack submarines in Navy force-structure planning and ship-procurement plans. Issues for Congress include the following: What should the attack submarine force-level goal be? At what rate should Virginia-class submarines be procured in coming years? Should the current joint-production arrangement for building Virginia-class submarines be continued or altered? Should the Navy start design work now on a new kind of attack submarine? Congress's decisions on these issues could significantly affect future Navy capabilities, Navy funding requirements, and the submarine industrial base. In considering what the attack submarine force-level goal should be, key factors to consider include day-to-day demands for attack submarines, potential wartime demands for attack ...
