Book Synopsis Ukrainian Migration to the European Union by : Olena Fedyuk
Download or read book Ukrainian Migration to the European Union written by Olena Fedyuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together research findings from a variety of disciplines in this integrated study of the migration of Ukrainian nationals to the EU. It contextualizes and historicizes this migration against the background of the series of crises experienced by Ukraine and the wider region over the last thirty or so years, from the dissolution of the USSR, through EU border changes, to the failed economic reforms of independent Ukraine. The book reviews major publications in a variety of disciplines and in several languages, including Russian, Ukrainian and English. It provides a critical analysis of these authoritative sources, linking historical and contemporary texts to establish a longitudinal perspective on migration trends and practices. The spatial, temporal, gender and geopolitical aspects of migration are examined, with expert analysis of the implications for economics, immigration policies, and migration studies. The contributors also draw on national and international academic research and country-specific data to describe the experience of Ukrainian migration in six European countries: Poland, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. These detailed portraits identify the principal trends and will help researchers, policy makers, and students to a better understanding of the dynamics of migration flow in the region as a whole. “A timely volume covering many cases and many facets of Ukrainian mobility in the EU. A must have for all libraries.” Anna Triandafyllidou, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) "Is Ukraine the Mexico of Europe, I once asked. It is one of the most eminent migration cases to study. This book fills an acute knowledge gap and is a rich and important contribution." Franck Düvell, University of Oxford “This collection offers a comprehensive historical and geographical analysis of various migratory patterns from Ukraine to different European countries. It is a must read for migration scholars and for anyone interested in this highly topical phenomenon.” Lena Näre, University of Helsinki

This book was released on 2009 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few issues on the American political agenda are more complex or divisive than immigration. There is no shortage of problems with current policies and practices, from the difficulties and delays that confront many legal immigrants to the large number of illegal immigrants living in the country. Moreover, few issues touch as many areas of U.S. domestic life and foreign policy. Immigration is a matter of homeland security and international competitiveness, as well as a deeply human issue central to the lives of millions of individuals and families. It cuts to the heart of questions of citizenship and American identity and plays a large role in shaping both America's reality and its image in the world. Immigration's emergence as a foreign policy issue coincides with the increasing reach of globalization. Not only must countries today compete to attract and retain talented people from around the world, but the view of the United States as a place of unparalleled openness and opportunity is also crucial to the maintenance of American leadership. There is a consensus that current policy is not serving the United States well on any of these fronts. Yet agreement on reform has proved elusive. The goal of the Independent Task Force on U.S. Immigration Policy was to examine this complex issue and craft a nuanced strategy for reforming immigration policies and practices.
Book Synopsis How Ukraine Became a Market Economy and Democracy by : Anders Åslund
Download or read book How Ukraine Became a Market Economy and Democracy written by Anders Åslund and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Europe's old nations steeped in history, Ukraine is today an undisputed independent state. It is a democracy and has transformed into a market economy with predominant private ownership. Ukraine's postcommunist transition has been one of the most protracted and socially costly, but it has taken the country to a desirable destination. Åslund's vivid account of Ukraine's journey begins with a brief background, where he discusses the implications of Ukraine's history, the awakening of society because of Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms, the early democratization, and the impact of the ill-fated Soviet economic reforms. He then turns to the reign of President Leonid Kravchuk from 1991 to 1994, the only salient achievement of which was nation-building, while the economy collapsed in the midst of hyperinflation. The first two years of Leonid Kuchma's presidency, from 1994 to 1996, were characterized by substantial achievements, notably financial stabilization and mass privatization. The period 1996–99 was a miserable period of policy stagnation, rent seeking, and continued economic decline. In 2000 hope returned to Ukraine. Viktor Yushchenko became prime minister and launched vigorous reforms to cleanse the economy from corruption, and economic growth returned. The ensuing period, 2001–04, amounted to a competitive oligarchy. It was quite pluralist, although repression increased. Economic growth was high. The year 2004 witnessed the most joyful period in Ukraine, the Orange Revolution, which represented Ukraine's democratic breakthrough, with Yushchenko as its hero. The postrevolution period, however, has been characterized by great domestic political instability; a renewed, explicit Russian threat to Ukraine's sovereignty; and a severe financial crisis. The answers to these challenges lie in how soon the European Union fully recognizes Ukraine's long-expressed identity as a European state, how swiftly Ukraine improves its malfunctioning constitutional order, and how promptly it addresses corruption.

Book Synopsis The External Dimension of the EU’s Migration Policy by : Katharina Eisele
Download or read book The External Dimension of the EU’s Migration Policy written by Katharina Eisele and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the EU has been active in developing a common European immigration policy in cooperation with third countries and in building an “external dimension” of such an EU policy. The linkages between the EU’s external relations and migration policies have influenced the distinct legal positions of third-country nationals (non-EU nationals). This book critically discusses whether the EU’s objective of creating a common EU migration policy can be achieved against the backdrop of a highly fragmented EU framework for migration law and policy, and it argues that it is difficult to speak of one single, unitary group of third-country nationals forming the counterpart to EU citizens.

It focuses on the volume of migration flows, the number and socio-demographic characteristics of migrants, migration factors and the situation of migrants in receiving countries. The authors, who include demographers, economists, geographers, anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists, used various methods and sources of information, such as censuses, administrative statistics, the results of mass sample surveys and in-depth interviews. This heterogeneity highlights the multifaceted nature of the topic of migration movements.
Book Synopsis Mike Starr of Oshawa by : Myron Momryk
Download or read book Mike Starr of Oshawa written by Myron Momryk and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Starr had a remarkable career in Canadian politics. In June 1957, he was appointed Minister of Labour in John Diefenbaker’s cabinet and created a sensation, especially among Canadian ethnocultural groups. He made political history as the first Ukrainian Canadian appointed to federal cabinet. As Minister of Labour, Starr was faced with numerous national problems, including seasonal unemployment, regional disparities, union negotiations and emerging militant nationalism in Quebec. When the Diefenbaker government was defeated in the 1963 federal election, Starr returned to his earlier role as Member of Parliament. With the changing Canadian political environment, he was defeated by a tiny margin in the 1968 federal election. Starr continued his distinguished career of public service from 1968 to 1980. He promoted the increasing involvement of ethnocultural groups in Canada political life. In recent decades, it has become a political norm to have members of various ethnocultural and visible minority groups elected to the House of Commons, and appointed to Cabinet and other senior government positions. For breaking this barrier, Mike Starr was indeed a pioneer in Canadian politics. This book is published in English.
Book Synopsis Ukraine and Russia by : Paul D'Anieri
Download or read book Ukraine and Russia written by Paul D'Anieri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-23 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fully revised and updated in-depth analysis of the war in Ukraine, Paul D'Anieri explores the dynamics within Ukraine, between Ukraine and Russia, and between Russia and the West that emerged with the collapse of the Soviet Union and eventually resulted in Russia's invasion in 2022. Proceeding chronologically, this book shows how Ukraine's separation from Russia in 1991, at the time called a 'civilized divorce,' led to Europe's most violent conflict since WWII. It argues the conflict came about because of three underlying factors-the security dilemma, the impact of democratization on geopolitics, and the incompatible goals of a post-Cold War Europe. Rather than a peaceful situation that was squandered, D'Anieri argues that these were deep-seated pre-existing disagreements that could not be bridged, with concerning implications for the prospects of resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
