Book Synopsis Sergei Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky by : Kevin Bartig
Download or read book Sergei Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky written by Kevin Bartig and published by Oxford Keynotes. This book was released on 2017 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon its premiere in July 1938 during a time of rising tension between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, Sergei Eisenstein's epic film Alexander Nevsky - with a score by preeminent composer Sergei Prokofiev - was widely lauded by Soviet critics and audiences. The score, which Prokofiev wouldarrange as a separate cantata the following year, approximates the film's narrative, depicting the Proto-Russian citizens of Novgorod's heroic victory over the invading Teutonic Knights. A transparent allegory of contemporary Soviet might in the fact of Nazi war-mongering, the film is regarded as aclassic exemplar of state intervention in the arts, commissioned by Stalin to bolster patriotism and national pride, and Prokofiev's cantata remains one of his most performed works.Drawing from a wide range of archival materials, musicologist Kevin Bartig reassesses the genesis of Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky cantata, as well as the various historical projects that have given the music an enduring place in the international performance canon. Part of The Oxford KeynotesSeries, this volume considers the ways in which time, place, socio-political concerns, and critical traditions mediate the various meanings of an iconic work like Prokofiev's, and asks how musicians and listeners alike have encountered its music both historically and today.

Download or read book Off Nevsky Prospekt written by Elena Markova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off Nevsky Prospekt is the first study to be published in English of the exceptionally rich and diverse theatre studio movement which has flourished in St Petersburg during the 1980s and '90s. Professor Markova charts the development of the theatre studios - from their beginnings as a reaction to the repressive atmosphere of the Soviet period and through the "theatre bacchanalia" of the Perestroika years. She then surveys today's vibrant scene, with analyses of key productions and interviews with many of the central figures, and describes how theatre studios have subverted the conventions of the past to create a new dialogue with the changing society from which their audience is drawn.

Book excerpt: A true legendary Russian hero, a groundbreaking Russian filmmaker! Alexander Nevsky is a central figure in Russian history, having lived during one of Russia''s darkest periods — the invasion of the Teutonic Knights. Alexander Nevsky helped establish the Russian nation by defeating the Teutonic Knights, invaders from the last vestiges of the Holy Roman Empire, with an army comprised of ordinary citizens who were poorly-equipped soldiers, but fought for their freedom. This ragtag band, against overwhelming odds, defeated the invaders in an epic battle on the frozen lake Peipus — a spectacular achievement that is still celebrated in Russia to this day. In 1938, the great Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein, much acclaimed for his masterful historical interpretations, as seen in "Battleship Potemkin" (1925) and "Ivan the Terrible" (1944), brought the story of Alexander Nevsky to life on the silver screen in an innovative and brilliant way, by developing new film techniques that remain in use almost 100 years later by some of the greatest directors of our time. Now, following in the steps of Eisenstein, IDW is proud to present one of the most compelling historical graphic novels ever produced — one that is as relevant today as it was at any time in history!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audiences have long enjoyed Sergei Prokofiev's musical score for Alexander Nevsky, a historical film that cast a thirteenth-century Russian victory over invading Teutonic Knights as an allegory of contemporary Soviet strength in the face of Nazi warmongering. The cantata that Prokofiev derived from the score has proven even more popular and remains one of his most-performed works. This critical companion explores this music and the ways in which it has engaged listeners, performers, and artists throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, tracing its path from state propaganda to repertory classic.

Book Synopsis The Public Image of Eastern Orthodoxy by : Heather L. Bailey
Download or read book The Public Image of Eastern Orthodoxy written by Heather L. Bailey and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the period between the revolutions of 1848-1849 and the First Vatican Council (1869-1870), The Public Image of Eastern Orthodoxy explores the circumstances under which westerners, concerned about the fate of the papacy, the Ottoman Empire, Poland, and Russian imperial power, began to conflate the Russian Orthodox Church with the state and to portray the Church as the political tool of despotic tsars. As Heather L. Bailey demonstrates, in response to this reductionist view, Russian Orthodox publicists launched a public relations campaign in the West, especially in France, in the 1850s and 1860s. The linchpin of their campaign was the building of the impressive Saint Alexander Nevsky Church in Paris, consecrated in 1861. Bailey posits that, as the embodiment of the belief that Russia had a great historical purpose inextricably tied to Orthodoxy, the Paris church both reflected and contributed to the rise of religious nationalism in Russia that followed the Crimean War. At the same time, the confrontation with westerners' negative ideas about the Eastern Church fueled a reformist spirit in Russia while contributing to a better understanding of Eastern Orthodoxy in the West.
