Download or read book Physics of Disordered Materials written by David Adler and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985-08-01 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume and its two companion volumes, entitled Tetrahedrally-Bonded Amorphous Semiconductors and Localization and Metal-Insulator Transitions, are our way of paying special tribute to Sir Nevill Mott and to express our heartfelt wishes to him on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Sir Nevill has set the highest standards as a physicist, teacher, and scientific leader. Our feelings for him include not only the respect and admiration due a great scientist, but also a deep affection for a great human being, who possesses a rare combination of outstanding personal qualities. We thank him for enriching our lives, and we shall forever carry cherished memories of this noble man. Scientists best express their thanks by contributing their thoughts and observations to a Festschrift. This one honoring Sir Nevill fills three volumes, with literally hundreds of authors meeting a strict deadline. The fact that contributions poured in from all parts of the world attests to the international cohesion of our scientific community. It is a tribute to Sir Nevill's stand for peace and understanding, transcending national borders. The editors wish to express their gratitude to Ghazaleh Koefod for her diligence and expertise in deciphering and typing many of the papers, as well as helping in numerous other ways. The blame for the errors that remain belongs to the editors.
Book Synopsis Fragments Of Science: Festschrift For Mendel Sachs by : Dharam V Ahluwalia
Download or read book Fragments Of Science: Festschrift For Mendel Sachs written by Dharam V Ahluwalia and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-11-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Mendel Sachs's contributions have been wide-ranging and the lectures presented at the symposium honoring him on his retirement encompassed a broad spectrum — hence the title Fragments of Science. The topics covered include solar physics, quantum mechanics, crystallography, elementary particles, logic and philosophy, and the history of physics. Included also is a new poem by noted poet Robert Creeley, composed especially for the symposium.Harvey Breverman, an eminent artist and professor of art, attended the symposium and sketched the lecturers and recorded some of the material they presented (as seen from the eyes of an artist!). These remarkable drawings are reproduced in duotone throughout the volume. Post-banquet reminiscences of turbulent times at the university in the late 1960s by noted author and computer guru Cliff Stoll enliven the volume. T Y Wu and Sachs exchange greetings and comments regarding their discussions of the twin paradox in the 1970s. Sachs closes the volume with an illuminating autobiographical chapter. This is a highly stimulating volume and a feast for the eyes.

Book Synopsis New Horizons in Low-Dimensional Electron Systems by : H Aoki
Download or read book New Horizons in Low-Dimensional Electron Systems written by H Aoki and published by . This book was released on 1991-12-31 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent dramatic progress in solid state physics, as highlighted by novel phenomena in semiconductor heterostructures or intercalation compounds and by high Tc superconductivity, is a fascinating outcome of the interaction between the physicists and chemists in various fields working on low-dimensional systems. The strength of the present volume lies in the fact that it gives a survey of the frontier of various classes of low-dimensional systems with articles by leading scientists from the international community. The volume has been conceived as a tribute to Professor H. Kamimura to honour his accomplishments upon his retirement from the University of Tokyo. Reflecting his wide spectrum of interests, the topics covered here range from (i) intercalation compounds and layered materials, (ii) 2D systems and superlattices, (iii) high Tc compounds to (iv) surfaces, mesoscopic systems, quasi-1D systems and point defects, thus ranging from 2D down to 0D, from superconductors to insulators, and from physics to quantum chemistry. The remarkable richness of subjects and approaches treated here will enable the readers to discover intriguing common and distinct key concepts in different classes of systems. This addition to the series Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Low-Dimensional Structures will thus prove to be fundamental to an exploration of the new horizons in condensed-matter physics and chemistry in the 1990s.
Book Synopsis The Physics of Metals: Volume 1, Electrons by : J. M. Ziman
Download or read book The Physics of Metals: Volume 1, Electrons written by J. M. Ziman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1969, volume one of The Physics of Metals is an advanced treatise written by a team of international experts. It presents a definitive account of a major field of modern physics and will be of value to both experimental and theoretical solid state physicists and metallurgists seeking a clear explanation of the physical phenomena occurring in metals, without recourse to elaborate mathematics. The volume is based around the electronic properties of metals and has articles on the calculation of band structures, observation of the Fermi surface, effects of a magnetic field, surface and size effects, conduction of heat and electricity, liquid metals, alloys and special properties of transition metals. The work was inspired by the desire to honour Sir Nevill Mott by writing an account of some of the topics treated in Mott and Jones' classic work The Theory of the Property of Metals and Alloys.
