Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crucifixion and the Death Cry of Jesus Christ The synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) emphatically state that Jesus cried out in a loud voice just as he breathed his last. This cry caused hardened Roman soldiers to fear, praise God, and state that "truly, this man was the Son of God." All the multitudes who came together for this spectacle, when they saw what happened, began to return, beating their breast. Why were the multitudes so affected by Christ's death? In this book, Dr. Phelan combines more than thirty years of the study of medicine, ancient languages, and scripture to show the reality of the death of Jesus Christ. A clear description of the ancient times and the crucifixion process is presented. Seasoned Bible scholars will find refreshing new insight into what happened when Jesus was crucified. New believers can learn how the suffering of Jesus really happened. All will be reminded that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Dr Geoffrey Phelan is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He has been in the private practice of Family Medicine in Southern California for more than 30 years. He and Donna, his wife of 34 years, live in Southern California, and have five grown children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These superb works are without equal in modern literature. Schilder ''brings the reader into touch with the spiritual and temporal forces which converged during the Passion Week. He is careful to keep Christ central, and he blends in a masterful way this culmination of our Lord's earthly life with historical facts and psychological realities'' (Cyril Barber, The Minister's Library). Schilder was a noted Dutch scholar of the early twentieth century. The three volumes of this work were translated by Henry Zylstra. They first appeared in 1937. The three volumes cover three aspects of the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus Christ. They are entitled: Christ Crucified, Christ in His Suffering, and, Christ On Trial. In The Minister's Library, Cyril Barber states: ''Theologically accurate, abounds in suggestive insights, and provides exegetical illumination for a score of Easter sermons. It is a classic treatment on the passion of Christ. [It} deserves a place in every pastor's library. [The three volumes} cover the night of His betrayal to His condemnation . . . [it is] a learned, accurate treatment.'' That says a lot about this unique, very important work. It is simply indispensable to the understanding and feeling of the power of the passion of Christ. To put it into the words of the Apostle Paul, all should feel as he did, ''[Oh that I might] ''be found in Him . . . to know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, having been conformed to His death, if somehow I may attain to a resurrection out of the dead'' (Philippians 3:9-11). Through the guidance and inspiration of God the Holy Spirit Schilder has captured the drama and the pathos of Christ's ordeal, and yet also passes on to the reader the triumph and the exultation of Christ as He completes His voluntary submission to the Father's will: ''Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but You prepared a body for Me. You did not delight in burnt offering and sacrifices concerning sins. Then I said, Lo, I come in the heading of the Book it was written concerning Me, to do Your will, O God'' (Psalm 39:6-9; Heb. 10:5-7). No child of God is completely mature until he or she has gone to Gethsemane and followed the trail of Christ as He approached the hour when He must endure unspeakable humiliation, pain, and the suffering of momentary loss of the Father's presence with Him. It is no wonder that He sweat blood at the prospect, for He was not ignorant of what He must go through in order to provide salvation for His sheep: ''The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep'' (John 10:11). No one will better draw you down to the depths of this drama, a scene which only one Person could have endured, than Schilder. You will not be the same after you have followed Christ through these stirring looks that Schilder gives you - you will be a better Christian, by far. This is a Best Set in Print. Schilder was a man of many gifts, without any doubt. Anyone who has read his writings, even some of them, will readily acknowledge that he possessed the ability to look at various theological questions in different ways and to express his ideas in sometimes eloquent ways which were often fresh and new. 560 pages, blue hard cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was crucifixion? Why was Jesus of Nazareth executed and what really happened? Gerard Sloyan begins with history and traces the development of the New Testament accounts of Jesus' death. He shows how Jesus' death came to be seen as sacrificial and how the evolving understandings of Jesus' death affected those who suffered most from it - the Jews. He then traces the emergence and development - in theology, liturgy, literature, art - of the conviction that Jesus' death was redemptive, as seen both in soteriological theory from Tertullian to Anselm, in the Reformation and modern eras, and in more popular religious responses to the crucifixion. Especially fascinating is the story of the emergence of a distinct "Passion piety" that still characterizes the West. In all this Sloyan detects the separation of the cross from Jesus' life and resurrection, allowing the mythicizing of an event too large for mere words to handle: the mystery of the cross.

Book excerpt: The Love of God For God so loved the World, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. The love of God is a stream of crimson blood poured out. It comes down from His head, over His brow, getting in to His eyes, alongside His nose, seeping into His mouth as He gasps for breath, covering His naked body as He hangs in agony and shame, pouring forth from His hands, feet and side and from the flesh gaping open where He was stricken as the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, dripping down onto the ground, then covering the mercy seat in Heaven, now covering me, and more than covering me, now cleansing me, now coursing through MY veins and pumping through MY heart, purifying me, giving me life so I can, through His life in me, also give life...giving you life if you know Him so you can also through His life give life. There is a path that is stained with Jesus' blood and leads to His crucifixion and ultimately to our crucifixion if we will follow Him. After salvation, man must be made to detest with all his being the sin nature within him. When he does he will kill it (Romans 6:6). "How shall we, who are dead to sin, live any longer in it?" (Romans 6:2). When he kills it, he allows Christ to be fully formed in him and is fit then to walk out the rest of his life on earth in single-minded devotion to Christ, longing for the moment he will be forever with Him in glory. This is the love of God. Cheryl lives in South Carolina with her Husband and two children, serving and loving the Lord.

Book excerpt: Few treatments of the death of Jesus Christ have made a point of accounting for the gruesome, degrading, public manner of his death by crucifixion, a mode of execution so loathsome that the ancient Romans never spoke of it in polite society. Rutledge probes all the various themes and motifs used by the New Testament evangelists and apostolic writers to explain the meaning of the cross of Christ. She shows how each of the biblical themes contributes to the whole, with the Christus Victor motif and the concept of substitution sharing pride of place along with Irenaeus's recapitulation model.

Book excerpt: In 1570, at the request of Edmund Grindal, Bishop of London, John Foxe preached a sermon at Paul's Cross, which was an open-air pulpit {on the grounds of St. Paul's Cathedral} of mostly timber with room for 3 or 4 inside it, set on stone steps with a lead-covered roof and a low surrounding wall. From here was preached much of the English Reformation, with sermons preached here usually printed and thus redistributed to a wider audience. This lofty exposition of the Protestant doctrine of redemption and attack on the doctrinal errors of the Papist Church was enlarged and published that year as A Sermon of Christ Crucified. "To know the crucified sacrifice of Christ's body to be a perfect deliverance of all his people, to be a full satisfaction once, and for ever, for all our sins - to be a free justification, redemption, and righteousness before God for ever, to all them that believe in him, without any other means or help adjoined to him - this is to know Christ Jesus crucified." Foxe.
