Multilayer diffraction phenomena are described in general and in particular for the case in which one of the materials of a bilayer is ferromagnetic and the neutron beam polarized. Recent neutron diffraction measurements performed on some interesting multilayer systems are discussed. 70 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: Organic thin films grown on solid surfaces are of great importance in applications such as microelectronics, biosensors, lubrication, and coatings. Using neutron diffraction and synchrotron x-ray scattering, we have conducted experiments to study the growth and structure of alkane films on solid surfaces. Our neutron diffraction study of a high-coverage monolayer of tetracosane (an alkane-chain molecule containing 24 carbon atoms) adsorbed on a graphite substrate shows that, near room temperature, the monolayer has a different structure than in a lower coverage monolayer investigated previously. Upon heating, it transforms from a crystalline to a liquid-crystal-like phase. For dotriacontane (an alkane chain molecule containing 32 carbon atoms, denoted C32) films adsorbed on silicon wafers, our x-ray specular reflectivity measurements show a unique structure in that the first one or two layers of molecules are oriented with their long axis parallel to the surface and are followed by a layer of molecules oriented with their long axis perpendicular to the substrate. As more molecules are added onto the substrate, bulk particles having two different structures nucleate on top of the film. For C32 grown on a single-crystal silver surface, x-ray diffraction shows that monolayer and multilayer films have a different crystal structure near room temperature. Specular x-ray reflectivity measurements demonstrate that multilayer films exhibit a layered structure even when they are fluid at high temperatures. At higher coverage, bulk particles nucleate with three different orientations. The structure and growth behavior of alkane films discovered in this research may help design better methods to grow organic crystals for microelectronics devices and to develop better lubricants.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two different neutron diffraction experiments on layered structures have been carried out at the University of Missouri Research Reactor Center. In the first project, the structure of lipid model membranes, consisting of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and cholesterol, and the effect of introducing various alkanes, such as hexane, decane, and toluene, was investigated. The experiments were conducted using PC's with 10 to 20 carbon atoms in the polymethylene chains. By replacing hydrogen with deuterium on parts of the molecules (deuterium labeling) and comparing the scattering amplitude density profiles for the labeled and unlabeled bilayers, it was possible to resolve the spatial arrangement within the bilayer. It was found that the alkanes are localized in a narrow band in the hydrophobic region of the bilayer and that the orientation of their long axis was within the plane of the bilayer. Also, the change of position of the cholesterol molecule as a function of the polymethylene chain length was studied and lead to the unexpected result that it neither aligns itself with the PC head group nor with the end of the polymethylene chains. Additionally, the Debye-Waller factor for the labels on the PC and the cholesterol was determined, and for cholesterol it was found that the disorder (thermal and static) of the cholesterol molecules decreases with increasing temperature. The second project involved the study of the magnetic properties of Dy/Y superlattices with the surface normal between the (1-102) and (1-103) direction. Thus, the c-axis, the propagation direction of the helimagnetic spiral is at an angle of about 35$\sp\circ$ to the surface normal. Neutron diffraction scans showed that the 200nm thick Dy film and the (Dy$\sb\̐vert$Y$\sb5\rbrack\sb6$ superlattice sample behaves like bulk dysprosiun, i.e., having a helimagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition at T$\sb{C}$ = 85K. The other Dy/Y superlattice samples showed a coexistence of helimagnetic and ferromagnetic phase from low temperatures up to even above T$\sb{C}$. This was the first time that ferromagnetism was observed in Dy/Y superlattices. This coexistence can be attributed to the faceted structure of the samples which consists of two distinct domains, i.e., two mesoscopic superlattices. For all the samples investigated, the magnetic moment, the turnangle of the helimagnetic spiral, and the coherence length as a function of temperature were determined. Also, an attempt was made to model the nuclear scattering, i.e., structure factor calculation. Thus, both experiments focused on layered structures and utilized the neutrons unique capabilities as a probe to study the properties of these thin samples.

Often these applications, such as lubrication, involve molecularly thin films of alkanes. We have studied the structures of n-tetracosane (n-C24D50) and squalane (C30H62) adsorbed on graphite below room temperature using neutron diffraction. We find that both the n-tetracosane and the squalane monolayers undergo a phase transition from a more-ordered crystalline phase to a less-ordered "smectic" phase on heating. Quasielastic neutron scattering studies of multiple layers of n-heptane (n-C--D16) above a crystalline n-dotriacontane (n-C32D66) monolayer adsorbed on graphite reveal that two dynamical layers can be distinguished. The first is composed of the first heptane layer which exhibits slower motions. The second is composed of the additional layers above this monolayer, which exhibit faster diffusion comparable to that of bulk. We also studied a monolayer of n-tetracosane adsorbed on graphite by quasielastic neutron scattering. We found that a slower diffusion motion became activated at 330 K, where molecular dynamics simulations indicate most molecular motions become too fast for observation. Instead, these simulations indicate that intramolecular and rotational diffusion of more globularly shaped n-tetracosane molecules, which contain many gauche defects, is being observed at this temperature.

Book excerpt: The ability to understand and control the unique properties of interfaces has created an entirely new field of magnetism, with profound impact in technology and serving as the basis for a revolution in electronics. Our understanding of the physics of magnetic nanostructures has also advanced significantly. This rapid development has generated a need for a comprehensive treatment that can serve as an introduction to the field for those entering it from diverse fields, but which will also serve as a timely overview for those already working in this area. The four-volume work Ultra-Thin Magnetic Structures aims to fulfill this dual need. The original two volumes – now available once more – are An Introduction to the Electronic, Magnetic and Structural Properties (this volume) and "Measurement Techniques and Novel Magnetic Properties." Two new volumes, "Fundamentals of Nanomagnetism" and "Applications of Nanomagnetism," extend and complete this comprehensive work by presenting the foundations of spintronics.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on an increasingly important area of materials science and technology, namely, the fabrication and properties of artificial materials where slabs of magnetized materials are sandwiched between slabs of nonmagnetized materials. It includes reviews by experts on the theory and descriptions of the various experimental techniques such as those using nuclear or electron spin probes, as well as optical, X-ray or neutron probes. It also reviews potential applications such as the giant magnetoresistance, and one specialized preparation technique, the electrodeposition. The various chapters are tutorial in nature, making the subject accessible to nonspecialists, as well as useful to researchers in the field.
