Book excerpt: After World War II, with its advent of nuclear energy, one of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy was the development of neutron activation analysis (NAA) as an accurate tool for characterizations of elements in a variety of matrices. NAA is a technique based on irradiation in a nuclear reactor or other irradiation source and measuring resultant radioactivity of specific isotopes; it is a very accurate and precise technique. A large body of data exists on the applications of this technique to crude oil and petroleum products. At one time, several universities in the United States, such as the University of Kentucky, University of California at San Diego, University of California at Irvine, Purdue University, University of Missouri, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M University, Cornell University, University of Oregon, University of Maryland, and Washington State University, had active programs in NAA of fossil fuels and other matrices. Because of the difficulty of access to a nuclear reactor and associated radiation hazards, however, it has found only limited use in petrochemical or oil company laboratories. But one does not need one's own nuclear reactor for NAA because several commercial companies provide such services at a reasonable price. The universities mentioned also provide irradiation services to interested parties.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis by : G. Molnar
Download or read book Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis written by G. Molnar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is a unique, non-destructive nuclear analytical method with multi-element capabilities. It is most effective if intense neutron beams (especially cold beams) of nuclear reactors are used to induce the prompt gamma radiation. Based largely on the authors' pioneering research in cold neutron PGAA, the handbook describes the methodology in self-contained manner and reviews recent applications. The library of prompt gamma ray data and spectra for all natural elements is a unique aid to the practitioner. The level is understandable by a broad audience, which facilitates teaching and training. The Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis is a comprehensive handbook written for those practising the method, wanting to implement it at a reactor facility, or just looking for a powerful non-destructive method of element analysis. The book is also useful for nuclear physics, chemistry and engineering scientists, scholars and graduate students interested in neutron-induced gamma ray spectroscopy and nuclear analytical methods.

Download or read book Neutron and Gamma-ray Spectroscopy and Activation Analysis written by Norman C. Rasmussen and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this contract were to carry out basic research in the areas of neutron spectroscopy and dosimetry, gamma-ray spectroscopy and dosimetry, and activation analysis techniques. Early work in gamma-ray spectroscopy was done mostly with the bent crystal spectrometers and the triple coincidence scintillation spectrometer which were used in capture gamma-ray studies. Later, however, all the work in gamma-ray spectroscopy was in the development and application of lithium drifted Ge(Li) solid state detectors. A description is included of the fabrication techniques used and the application of these detectors to the study of capture gamma-rays and spent reactor fuel. Work on problems of neutron spectroscopy and dosimetry are described. This work resulted in an improved method for measuring fast neutron spectra through the use of foils. The work done in activation analysis is summarized.
Book Synopsis Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.

Book Synopsis Development of a Prompt-gamma, Neutron-activation Analysis Facility at the Texas A & M University Nuclear Science Center by : Otu Effiong Inyang
Download or read book Development of a Prompt-gamma, Neutron-activation Analysis Facility at the Texas A & M University Nuclear Science Center written by Otu Effiong Inyang and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prompt-gamma, neutron-activation analysis facility earlier developed at the Nuclear Science Center of Texas A & M University could not be used successfully to analyze geologic samples due to high detection background, low neutron fluence rate and poor detection equipment . A systematic investigation into the performance capability of a prompt-gamma, neutron activation analysis facility was undertaken in this research project. The facility was reconstructed and used to obtain prompt-gamma spectra of chlorine and cadmium and from the spectra, the net peak area counts for the most intense prompt-gamma-ray energies were obtained. A theoretical model was developed which can predict the net peak area counts expected on these prompt-gamma-ray energies using the thermal neutron fluence rate at the sample position, the absolute efficiency of the detector, and the mass and partial gamma-ray production cross section data for the samples. The experimental and predicted results were compared to establish the performance capability of the reconstructed facility. Good agreements between experimental and predicted results were obtained for chlorine, but results from cadmium showed larger discrepancies due to self-shielding effects. Corrections for self-shielding effects were applied to results from cadmium and the experimental and predicted results were also in good agreement. The satisfactory results indicate that it is possible to implement the prompt-gamma, neutron-activation analysis technique at Beam Port #1 of the Nuclear Science Center Reactor. To be able to obtain excellent results from other samples, improvements in shielding materials to attain a lower detection background and a highly efficient detection system should be incorporated.
