Book excerpt: This volume brings together international experts in diverse areas of physics to discuss recent progress in the experimental and theoretical study of neutrino oscillations.Readers are brought up to date with the latest developments in important neutrino experiments, and the associated progress in theory is summarized. The principal projects worldwide, such as Super-Kamiokande, SNO, KamLAND, are considered, and contributions also report on future experiments, including JPARC, OPERA, and MINOS.Several other related topics, such as dark matter, double beta decay, lepton flavor violation, and cosmology, are discussed, reflecting the wide-ranging specializations of many contributors outside of pure neutrino physics.

Book excerpt: The prestigious Identification of Dark Matter workshop series was initiated to assess the status of work that attempts to identify the constitution of dark matter. In particular, it aims to review the success of current methods that are used in the search for dark matter, as well as the new techniques that are likely to improve prospects for detecting possible dark matter candidates in the future. In the 5th International Workshop, special emphasis was placed on the recent results obtained in experiments searching for baryonic and non-baryonic dark matter. This volume comprises the high-quality review articles and papers contributed by leaders and promising young physicists who attended the conference. It provides the most recent updates on dark matter searches from both experimental and theoretical points of view. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)• CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences

Book excerpt: The aim of this workshop was to put together the efforts from various fields necessary for understanding neutrino oscillations in detail, from both experimental and theoretical points of view. One of the main experimental issues was to understand the absolute flux of both the atmospheric and the solar neutrinos in order to obtain detailed parameter information on neutrino oscillations. The proceedings contain many discussions on phenomenology and theories about neutrino mass and oscillations. The topics include: solar neutrino oscillations; neutrino mixing and the neutrino mass matrices; the origin of the neutrino masses; long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments; KamLAND and low energy neutrino measurements. Related subjects such as μ-eγ experiments and proton decay are also discussed.

Book excerpt: This volume is the latest in a prominent biannual series of scientific meetings on the exciting research topics of dark matter and, more recently, of dark energy. It contains a state-of-the-art update on detection efforts by experimental groups around the world trying to pin down exotic new forms of matter under the names of axions, neutralinos, wimps, primordial black holes, q balls, sterile neutrinos, as well as a tantalizing new form of dark energy component called phantom energy and quintessence. The book is self-contained as it also includes general reviews on recent cosmological observations — supernovae measurements, cosmic matter distribution surveys and cosmic radiation anisotropies — introducing even the uninitiated reader to this fascinating frontier of research.

Book excerpt: In 2018 solar physics and neutrino research celebrated various historical highlight events. Among them were 80 years of the paper by Hans Bethe discussing solar fusion cycles as energy source of stars, the first results from the Homestake chlorine experiment celebrating 50 years as well as the discovery of neutrino oscillations 20 years ago by Super-Kamiokande. Since the last International Solar Neutrino Conference in 1997, solar neutrino detection was recognized by two Nobel Prizes, given to Raymond Davis Jr. (2002) and Arthur McDonald (2015).The present proceedings volume is based on the given talks and provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of recent developments and discoveries in the field of solar neutrino physics. Articles were written by renowned experts of their field and cover a wide range in experiments and theory from current and future solar neutrino measurements, elemental abundances, nuclear astrophysics, helioseismology, impact on general neutrino physics and more. Further contributions focus on experiments like Homestake, SAGE and GALLEX which are widely known as historic milestones in the field of solar neutrino physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IceCube Observatory, a South Pole instrument making the first actual observations of high-energy neutrinos, has been called the “weirdest” of the seven wonders of modern astronomy by Scientific American. In The Telescope in the Ice, Mark Bowen tells the amazing story of the people who built the instrument and the science involved. Located near the U. S. Amundsen-Scott Research Station at the geographic South Pole, IceCube is unlike most telescopes in that it is not designed to detect light. It employs a cubic kilometer of diamond-clear ice, more than a mile beneath the surface, to detect an elementary particle known as the neutrino. In 2010, it detected the first extraterrestrial high-energy neutrinos and thus gave birth to a new field of astronomy. IceCube is also the largest particle physics detector ever built. Its scientific goals span not only astrophysics and cosmology but also pure particle physics. And since the neutrino is one of the strangest and least understood of the known elementary particles, this is fertile ground. Neutrino physics is perhaps the most active field in particle physics today, and IceCube is at the forefront. The Telescope in the Ice is, ultimately, a book about people and the thrill of the chase: the struggle to understand the neutrino and the pioneers and inventors of neutrino astronomy.

The construction and operation of these facilities represent an increasing fraction of the funding for research. The most often calls for international collaborations. Since large facilities are now of great importance in all domains of physics, it is instructive to consider them in parallel. This is what is done in this book which puts emphasis on large physics facilities in Europe whilst taking a worldwide perspective.

Book Synopsis Neutrinos by : Arnold S. Lavro

Download or read book Neutrinos written by Arnold S. Lavro and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos are one of the most abundant particles in the universe. Because they have very little interaction with matter, however, they are incredibly difficult to detect. Neutrinos are similar to the more familiar electron, with one crucial difference: neutrinos do not carry electric charge. Because neutrinos are electrically neutral, they are not affected by the electromagnetic forces which act on electrons. Three types of neutrinos are known. Each type or 'flavour' of neutrino is related to a charged particle (which gives the corresponding neutrino its name). Hence, the 'electron neutrino' is associated with the electron, and two other neutrinos are associated with heavier versions of the electron called the muon and the tau. The book presents citations from the literature for the last three years from the journal literature and the existent book literature. Access is provided by subject, author and title indexes.
