Book Synopsis Parameters in Old French Syntax: Infinitival Complements by : E.H. Pearce

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. AIMS AND ASSUMPTIONS This book presents an analysis of infinitival complement constructions in Old French (OF) from the perspective of the Government-Binding (GB) framework. It aims, therefore, to establish within the terms of the GB framework just how the OF constructions are to be characterized and in just what sense they can or cannot be compared with the corresponding constructions in other Romance languages. The GB framework is an articulated theory about the structure of language which is based on the view that the aim of research into language is to construct a description of language which accurately reflects its essential nature. Whilst we know that individual languages may appear to be superficially very different, we also know that all languages are capable of expressing complex concepts and that all children acquire mastery of the language or languages to which they are exposed. The task, therefore, is to determine both the properties which languages have in common and the bounds within which they may differ. In the pursuit of these aims, the study of various languages of the Romance family has provided a rich source of material for the develop ment of the descriptive apparatus. Evidence of the contribution supplied by such work is apparent in references to Romance material in Chomsky (1981, 1982), in volumes such as Jaeggli (1982), Rizzi (1982a), Kayne (1984b), Burzio (1986), and in numerous papers devoted to particular constructions in a variety of Romance languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebecca Posner explores the history of the French language in all its manifestations. Within the framework of modern linguistic theory, she concentrates on how French acquired its distinctive identity and how different varieties of French relate to each other. This book richly illustrates the more technical aspects of linguistic change, and sets evidence of social history against the way the language has changed over time.

Book Synopsis Expletive and Referential Subject Pronouns in Medieval French by : Michael Zimmermann
Download or read book Expletive and Referential Subject Pronouns in Medieval French written by Michael Zimmermann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval French, usually analyzed as a null subject language, differs considerably from modern Romance null subject languages such as Spanish in the availability of non-expressed subject pronouns; specifically, it shows characteristics reminiscent of non-null, rather than null subject languages, such as the expression of expletive subject pronouns. The central goal of this book is to put forward an account of these differences. On the basis of the analysis of an extensive, newly established data corpus, the development of the expression of both expletive and referential subject pronouns until the 17th c. is determined. Following a thorough discussion of previous approaches, an alternative approach is presented which builds on the analysis of Medieval French as a non-null subject language. The non-expression of subject pronouns, licit in specific contexts in non-null subject languages, is shown to be restricted to configurations generally involving left-peripheral focalization. These configurations – and, concomitantly, non-expressed subject pronouns – are finally argued to be eventually lost for good in the wake of the initial observation by 17th c. writers of pertinent instructions campaigned for in highly influential works of language use.

Book Synopsis Impersonals and other Agent Defocusing Constructions in French by : Michel Achard
Download or read book Impersonals and other Agent Defocusing Constructions in French written by Michel Achard and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates French impersonals as a functional category. Any structure whose agent is defocused and whose predicate describes a situation stable enough to be generally available should be considered impersonal. In addition to il impersonals, the category also includes demonstrative (ce/ça), middle (se), and indefinite (on) structures. These different forms belong to the same functional category because they systematically code general and predictable events that cannot be imputed to a specific cause. Because generality and predictability are gradual notions, impersonals can only be identified within the context of specific constructional islands which therefore constitute the organizing principle of the French impersonal category. Conducted in Cognitive Grammar, the analysis follows the functional tradition in expanding the scope of French impersonals beyond il constructions, but also proposes a way of precisely delineating the category. This book will be of interest to anyone interested in impersonal constructions and French linguistics.
Book Synopsis Historical Romance Linguistics by : Randall Scott Gess
Download or read book Historical Romance Linguistics written by Randall Scott Gess and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 17 studies on historical Romance linguistics within a variety of current theoretical frameworks; it includes studies on phonology, morphology and syntax, focusing solely or comparatively on all five 'major' Romance languages: French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish. An introduction by the eminent Romance Linguist Jürgen Klausenburger addresses the fit of these studies in the overall development of the field of historical Romance linguistics since the 19th century. The studies in this volume demonstrate an organic link between Malkiel's (1961) 'classic' definition of Romance linguistics and the field of Romance linguistics today, because just as scholars of the field in the 19th century successfully applied the dominant paradigm of (historical) linguistics of their time, Neogrammarian theory, so do the authors contained in the present volume avail themselves of current linguistic advances to achieve equally significant results.

It covers the entire field of Romance linguistics, including the national languages as well as the lesser studied Romance languages. The editors welcome submissions of high-quality monographs and collected volumes on all areas of linguistic research, on medieval literature and on textual criticism. The publication languages of the series are French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian as well as German and English. Each collected volume should be as uniform as possible in its contents and in the choice of languages.
Book Synopsis Principles of Historical Morphology by : Jozef van Loon
Download or read book Principles of Historical Morphology written by Jozef van Loon and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2005 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impetuses to morphological change and to language change in general, are admittedly nonlinguistic. Nonetheless, this book argues that their impact points are determined by factors which reside in the morpheme system itself. The book, which is the first comprehensive outline of a historical morphology, aims to detect the panchronic regularities behind such phenomena as the apparently irresistible general process of deflexion or, conversely, the counteracting forces which enabled the persistence over centuries of inflections in some languages. Four complementary and intertwining principles are claimed to be crucial in this process. Two of them, markedness and iconicity relations, are rooted in human condition and communication. The other two, synergetic coherence and morphological distinctiveness, are of a purely linguistic nature and are language-specific. The effects of these determinant forces are demonstrated with examples which, due to the time-depth and the richness of the sources, predominantly come from Indo-European and Germanic languages.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Approaches to Romance Linguistics by : Julie Auger
Download or read book Contemporary Approaches to Romance Linguistics written by Julie Auger and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of twenty articles, selected from the 33rd annual Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages held at Indiana University in 2003, presents current theoretical approaches to a variety of issues in Romance linguistics. Invited speakers Luigi Burzio and Jose Ignacio Hualde contribute papers on the paradigmatics and syntagmatics of Italian verbal inflection and comparative/diachronic Romance intonation, respectively. The other papers, whose authors include both well-known researchers and younger scholars, represent such areas as French syntax (both synchronic and diachronic), second language acquisition (Spanish & English), Spanish intonation, phonology, syntax, and semantics, Italian semantics, Romanian morphology and syntax, Catalan phonology and morphology, and Galician phonology (two papers). The volume is rounded out by three explicitly comparative studies, one on proto-Romance phonology, one on microvariation in Romance syntax, and a third addressing syntactic microvariation among varieties of French and French-based creoles. Frameworks represented include Optimality Theory, Minimalism, and Construction Grammar.
