Abbracciando i principali e più attuali quesiti psicologici circa la natura degli stati di coscienza («esiste ciò che noi chiamiamo coscienza?» «di cosa è fatta la coscienza?»), il volume intende rivolgere uno sguardo particolare alle recenti acquisizioni della neuropsicologia e della psicologia cognitiva. Innanzitutto a cosa serve avere una coscienza? A partire dalle considerazioni sugli aspetti selettivi dei correlati di coscienza, il testo passa in rassegna il rapporto coscienza-funzioni percettive e sensoriali, i sistemi cognitivi superiori (come il pensiero e i processi di apprendimento, il linguaggio e la memoria), l’esperienza emotiva e le funzioni riflessive e metacognitive, nonché il rapporto tra coscienza, spazio e tempo. In secondo luogo, è realistico pensare che il cervello umano composto da strutture neurali e da sinapsi possa dare origine a uno stato complesso come quello dell’essere consci? Inoltre, la coscienza è una «proprietà» acquisita o una condizione innata nell’uomo? La coscienza diviene oggetto di analisi lungo il ciclo di vita dell’individuo, con un focus particolare sul suo carattere «sociale» e interattivo. Infine, al di sotto di quello conscio esiste un mondo «altro», a noi sconosciuto, quello del non-conscio. Di questo mondo siamo testimoni ogni qualvolta la coscienza viene meno, a causa di deficit che ne coinvolgono la sfera percettiva o cognitiva, quali le agnosie, le amnesie o le memorie illusorie, o ancora la sfera relazionale, come nelle patologie dissociative che compromettono la coscienza di sé. In queste pagine Anna Berti si colloca nella prospettiva opposta. Dopo aver discusso la legittimità e i problemi metodologici che si incontrano nello studio dei processi coscienti, vengono presentate le sindromi neuropsicologiche che più hanno contribuito a svelare operazioni e strutture del mentale legate ai meccanismi della consapevolezza, non individuabili quando il cervello funziona normalmente: lo studio dei casi clinici permette di trarre delle inferenze sulla struttura e sugli aspetti funzionali e adattativi della coscienza. I dati clinici sono discussi e confrontati con quelli ottenuti dalle più moderne tecniche di indagine neurobiologica, come la risonanza magnetica funzionale (fMRI) e la stimolazione magnetica transcranica (TMS). Nelle conclusioni viene presentata un’ipotesi relativa alla struttura dei processi di consapevolezza, secondo cui la coscienza non può essere considerata come prerogativa esclusiva di una componente esecutiva centrale, indivisibile e sovraimposta gerarchicamente alle altre funzioni mentali; al contrario la coscienza sembrerebbe avere caratteristiche modulari che riflettono anche a livello fenomenologico la struttura multidimensionale dei processi cognitivi.
