Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a first-of-its kind reference that systematically organizes and describes the adverse effects of drugs on the nervous system. Drug safety is recognized as an important aspect of pharmaceutical companies as well as practice of medicine. Chapters include case reports of adverse effects of drugs that are published as well as reported to drug manufacturers. The book scope is broad as it covers lack of efficacy, drug resistance, drug-disease and drug-drug interactions. This information is used to improve the use of drugs as well as to design better and safer drugs for the future, and is relevant to personalized medicine in trying to match the right drugs to the patients. Drug-induced Neurological Disorders offers a unique approach to this important topic by integrating clinical neurology with pharmacology with a focus on effects of drugs on the nervous system including those used for the treatment of neurological disorders as well systemic diseases. Many adverse effects involve multiple systems of the body and the syndromes with predominant effect on the nervous system are included in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical, protocol-oriented guide to the practice of neurology in the hospital setting A Doody's Core Title for 2019! Hospital neurology is one of the fastest growing subspecialties within neurology. Running an efficient and effective neurohospitalist line is important to the financial success of hospitals and the physicians employed there. Many neurology patients also have internal medicine problems, and often it is a general hospitalist without neurology training who treat these patients. These physicians sorely need more information on neurology. Conversely, neurologists caring for these patients have only had one year of internal medicine training and require more guidance on medical problems. Given these realities, there is a need for a resource on hospital neurology. With The Hospital Neurology Book, Drs. Salardini and Biller have created a practical, concise, and useful work that guides both neurologists and internists in the areas in which their training is currently not sufficient for hospital practice. The Hospital Neurology Book features a highly readable format, providing information physicians can act upon, including recipes and protocols for patient care and question-based chapter headings that lead physicians to the exact issue they are dealing with in the moment. Each chapter (or chapter section as appropriate) opens with a case study, setting the stage in a highly practical manner, and ends with high yield summary points useful for consolidating learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse drug reactions and interactions are still a major headache for healthcare professionals around the world. The US Food and Drug Administration's database recorded almost 300,000 serious adverse events in 2009 alone, of which 45,000 instances proved fatal. This updated new edition of the indispensable guide to drug interactions incorporates fresh research completed since the book's original publication by Humana Press in 2004. Additions include a new section on pharmacogenomics, a rapidly growing field that explores the genetic basis for the variability of responses to drugs. This new material reviews important polymorphisms in drug metabolizing enzymes and applies the findings to forensic interpretation, using case studies involving opiates as exemplars. Existing chapters from the first edition have in most cases been updated and reworked to reflect new data or incorporate better tables and diagrams, as well as to include recent drugs and formulations. Recent references have been inserted too. The handbook features extra material on illicit drug use, with a new chapter tackling the subject that covers cocaine, amphetamines and cannabis, among others. The section on the central nervous system also deals with a number of drugs that are abused illicitly, such as benzodiazepines, opiates flunitrazepam and GHB, while so-called 'social' drugs such as alcohol and nicotine are still discussed in the book's section on environmental and social pharmacology. Focusing as before on detailed explanation and incorporating both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic drug interactions, this book will continue to be a lodestar for health and forensic professionals as well as students.

Book excerpt: Improving and Accelerating Therapeutic Development for Nervous System Disorders is the summary of a workshop convened by the IOM Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders to examine opportunities to accelerate early phases of drug development for nervous system drug discovery. Workshop participants discussed challenges in neuroscience research for enabling faster entry of potential treatments into first-in-human trials, explored how new and emerging tools and technologies may improve the efficiency of research, and considered mechanisms to facilitate a more effective and efficient development pipeline. There are several challenges to the current drug development pipeline for nervous system disorders. The fundamental etiology and pathophysiology of many nervous system disorders are unknown and the brain is inaccessible to study, making it difficult to develop accurate models. Patient heterogeneity is high, disease pathology can occur years to decades before becoming clinically apparent, and diagnostic and treatment biomarkers are lacking. In addition, the lack of validated targets, limitations related to the predictive validity of animal models - the extent to which the model predicts clinical efficacy - and regulatory barriers can also impede translation and drug development for nervous system disorders. Improving and Accelerating Therapeutic Development for Nervous System Disorders identifies avenues for moving directly from cellular models to human trials, minimizing the need for animal models to test efficacy, and discusses the potential benefits and risks of such an approach. This report is a timely discussion of opportunities to improve early drug development with a focus toward preclinical trials.

Book excerpt: According to the authors, a drug-induced disease as an unintended effect of a drug, which results in mortality or morbidity with symptoms sufficient to prompt a patient to seek medical attention and/or require hospitalization. Since the first edition of this book was published in 2005, numerous drugs have been withdrawn from the market in the United States as a result of morbidity and/or mortality associated with drug-induced diseases. Despite best efforts to assure that all drugs are safe and effective, millions of patients each year develop drug-induced diseases. Every time a patient presents with a new disease or an exacerbation of an existing condition, someone needs to ask, “Could this be drug-related?” Now in its second edition, this popular and essential comprehensive resource provides a detailed analysis of how to identify, prevent, and manage drug-induced diseases. Edited by James E. Tisdale and Douglas A. Miller, with contributions from experts distinguished in their respective specialties, Drug-Induced Diseases is organized logically and is easy to use for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and pharmacy students alike. Inside you’ll find: Chapters dedicated to each disease state. In-depth tables throughout each chapter. A new section on Drug-Induced dermatologic diseases. New drugs implicated as the cause of specific disease(s). The inclusion of the Levels of Evidence classification scheme for identifying drug-induced diseases. And much more.

Book excerpt: This updated third edition of a successful book is a description of both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic antiepileptic drug (AED) interactions, including details of the magnitude and mechanism of interactions, and also of drug combinations that are not associated with interactions and therefore can be coprescribed without undue concern. Presented in alphabetical order and by drug class, drug interactions that occur between AEDs and also between AEDs and non-AEDs are described in three sections: Drug interactions between AEDs; Drug interactions between AEDs and non-AED Drugs: Interactions affecting AEDs; Drug interactions between AEDs and non-AED Drugs: Interactions affected by AEDs. Antiepileptic Drug Interactions: A Clinical Guide, 3rd Edition with its clear, concise and unambiguous content will allow physicians and allied health professionals to make more rational choices when AED polytherapy regimens are indicated. There is always a choice and avoiding highly interacting drugs and choosing drug combinations that are minimally interacting or do not interact should be the goal in treating patients with epilepsy. This book provides all the necessary information so as to allow this goal to be achieved and, if necessary, to aid effective management of AED interactions.

Book excerpt: Reports in the popular press about the increasing longevity of Americans and the aging of the baby boom generation are constant reminders that the American population is becoming older. Consequently, an issue of growing medical, health policy, and social concern is the appropriate and rational use of medications by the elderly. Although becoming older does not necessarily correlate with increasing illness, aging is associated with anatomical and physiological changes that affect how medications are metabolized by the body. Furthermore, aging is often related to an increased frequency of chronic illness (often combined with multiple health problems) and an increased use of medications. Thus, a better understanding of the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs; of the physiologic responses to those medications; as well as of the interactions among multiple medications is crucial for improving the health of older people.
