Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of invited works that consider constructive methods for neural networks, taken primarily from papers presented at a special th session held during the 18 International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks (ICANN 2008) in September 2008 in Prague, Czech Republic. The book is devoted to constructive neural networks and other incremental learning algorithms that constitute an alternative to the standard method of finding a correct neural architecture by trial-and-error. These algorithms provide an incremental way of building neural networks with reduced topologies for classification problems. Furthermore, these techniques produce not only the multilayer topologies but the value of the connecting synaptic weights that are determined automatically by the constructing algorithm, avoiding the risk of becoming trapped in local minima as might occur when using gradient descent algorithms such as the popular back-propagation. In most cases the convergence of the constructing algorithms is guaranteed by the method used. Constructive methods for building neural networks can potentially create more compact and robust models which are easily implemented in hardware and used for embedded systems. Thus a growing amount of current research in neural networks is oriented towards this important topic. The purpose of this book is to gather together some of the leading investigators and research groups in this growing area, and to provide an overview of the most recent advances in the techniques being developed for constructive neural networks and their applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural computation arises from the capacity of nervous tissue to process information and accumulate knowledge in an intelligent manner. Conventional computational machines have encountered enormous difficulties in duplicatingsuch functionalities. This has given rise to the development of Artificial Neural Networks where computation is distributed over a great number of local processing elements with a high degree of connectivityand in which external programming is replaced with supervised and unsupervised learning. The papers presented in this volume are carefully reviewed versions of the talks delivered at the International Workshop on Artificial Neural Networks (IWANN '93) organized by the Universities of Catalonia and the Spanish Open University at Madrid and held at Barcelona, Spain, in June 1993. The 111 papers are organized in seven sections: biological perspectives, mathematical models, learning, self-organizing networks, neural software, hardware implementation, and applications (in five subsections: signal processing and pattern recognition, communications, artificial vision, control and robotics, and other applications).

Book excerpt: Worldwide interest in the applications of evolutionary computing techniques to the design of engineering and information systems grows each day. Pattern recognition, control systems, factory scheduling, automation, generation of computer programs, and the design of intelligent paradigms all benefit from evolutionary techniques-their potential applications indeed seem limited only by the imaginations of scientists and engineers. This is an area of intensive research and development, and evolutionary computing techniques are themselves constantly evolving. It becomes important, then, that computer scientists and applications engineers have a working knowledge of the techniques, stay abreast of recent advances, and have the opportunity to incorporate them into their own systems and designs. Evolution of Engineering and Information Systems and Their Applications fills this need by providing an overview of the field and offering state-of-the-art reviews of the most important techniques and applications of evolutionary computing. The top experts from around the world discuss developments in genetic algorithms, genetic programming, and evolutionary strategies and applications including VLSI CAD, robot sensors, neural networks, and fuzzy classification systems. This is a new and very hot field, yet there are few-if any-resources that document and disseminate its advances. With Evolution of Engineering and Information Systems and Their Applications, you have the opportunity to learn from the leading authorities, use these powerful techniques to improve your own systems, and help evolutionary computing reach its nearly boundless potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In almost all areas of science and engineering, the use of computers and microcomputers has, in recent years, transformed entire subject areas. What was not even considered possible a decade or two ago is now not only possible but is also part of everyday practice. As a result, a new approach usually needs to be taken (in order) to get the best out of a situation. What is required is now a computer's eye view of the world. However, all is not rosy in this new world. Humans tend to think in two or three dimensions at most, whereas computers can, without complaint, work in n dimensions, where n, in practice, gets bigger and bigger each year. As a result of this, more complex problem solutions are being attempted, whether or not the problems themselves are inherently complex. If information is available, it might as well be used, but what can be done with it? Straightforward, traditional computational solutions to this new problem of complexity can, and usually do, produce very unsatisfactory, unreliable and even unworkable results. Recently however, artificial neural networks, which have been found to be very versatile and powerful when dealing with difficulties such as nonlinearities, multivariate systems and high data content, have shown their strengths in general in dealing with complex problems. This volume brings together a collection of top researchers from around the world, in the field of artificial neural networks.

Book excerpt: Neural networks is a field of research which has enjoyed rapid expansion in both the academic and industrial research communities. This volume contains papers presented at the Third Annual SNN Symposium on Neural Networks to be held in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, 14 - 15 September 1995. The papers are divided into two sections: the first gives an overview of new developments in neurobiology, the cognitive sciences, robotics, vision and data modelling. The second presents working neural network solutions to real industrial problems, including process control, finance and marketing. The resulting volume gives a comprehensive view of the state of the art in 1995 and will provide essential reading for postgraduate students and academic/industrial researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural networks are one of the fast-growing paradigms for learning systems with a wide variety of potential applications in industry. In particular there are general results which prove the universal applicability of neural networks to many problems. There is also an ever greater understanding of the underlying manner in which tasks such as classification can be solved optimally by this host of techniques. Through the application of ideas of statistics, dynamical systems theory and information theory the methods are likely to become ever more effective for solving problems previously found to be difficult to tackle using standard techniques. This book compares and contrasts the academic theory and the industrial reality, with case studies and latest research findings from international experts. The contributions describe application areas including finance, digital data transmission, hybrid systems, automotive and aerospace industries, pattern analysis in clinical psychiatry, time series prediction, and genetic and neural algorithms. This book demonstrates the vigour and strength of the subject in solving hard problems and as such will be of great interest to all researchers and professionals with an interest in neural networks.
