Book excerpt: with some 600 photos and 4000 drawings and plans, the Timber Construction Manual is a comprehensive and indispensable reference work in the specialist literature on timber. It looks at all types of timber and timber materials, also presenting detailed information on the current norms and standards. Chapters cover the basic principles of working with timber, providing detailed information on subjects such as heat, noise insulation, fire protection treatment. The significance of timber with particular reference to ecology is also investigated. Timber as a load-bearing material is considered, and topics such as new methods of joining, transport and montage are documented. The second part of the volume presents a large number of built examples which feature some "classic" structures but focus chiefly on more recent buildings. The spectrum presented ranges from heavy-load bridges to multi-storey residential buildings. The second part of the examples looks specifically at topics such as facades, building skins etc.

Book excerpt: Following on the success of the hardback, this new paperback considers thirty recently completed timber-built schemes by progressive architectural practices. It looks at how the selected buildings have derived their special character from wood, in response to an assortment of intriguing briefs - including an Olympic hall, a textile museum, a painter's studio and a theatre. The author's argument - that wood is the building material of the future - is explored through five chapters, each defining a different aspect of the debate. 'A new style' brings together the work of a generation of forward-looking architects who have rejected the high-tech and deconstructivist aesthetics of their predecessors and are instead using wood to design to the paired down legacy of such mentors as Herzog & de Meuron. 'New technology' looks at how advances in technology have enhanced the ease with which timber can be used as a building material - and shows how architects have employed this to their advantage. 'Green thinking' recounts the ingenious ways in which well thought-out wooden buildings have used wood to blur the boundaries between inside and out - with some startlingly beautiful results. And fi

Book excerpt: Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) was initially educated as mechanical engineer in Gothenburg. Yet it was his architectural apprenticeship in Munich 1909-10 that set him on his path as an architect, opening his own office in Stockholm in 1911. Although his built work is relatively small, Lewerentz is revered as one of Sweden's most eminent architects. Cemeteries and sacred buildings became a core part of Lewerentz's oeuvre, including Stockholm's South Cemetery (1914-17), Malmo Eastern Cemetery (1916), St. Mark's Church, Bjorkhagen (1956), and Petri Church, Klippan (1963). In association with Gunnar Asplund, he was also the main architect for the Stockholm International Exhibition (1930), and in collaboration with Erik Lallerstedt and David Hellden he created a masterpiece of functionalist architecture, the Malmo City Theatre (1935). Sigurd Lewerentz, Architect is a reprint of the first ever monograph on his work, originally published in English 1987 and long out of print. It tells the story of Lewerentz's life and presents his entire work in text and many photographs, drawings and plans.

Book excerpt: Aggersborg is the largest of the Danish circular fortresses of the Viking Age. Built by the king, Harald Bluetooth, in the second half of the tenth century, it was strategically placed on the shore of the Limfjord. Together with other Danish fortifications it was intended to play a major role in the politics of northern Europe. The fortress overlaid an extensive Viking-Age rural settlement which was destroyed when the fortress was constructed. The well-preserved remains of buildings and the many artefacts excavated here provide a unique view of this settlement and of its material culture.0The book gives an account of the extensive excavations by the National Museum of Denmark of both the fortress and the rural settlement and sets their structures and the objects found within the wider context of the Viking Age. It also sheds new light on Denmark's history at a time of major cultural and political challenges.
