Book excerpt: This thesis presents a novel distributed control paradigm for networked control systems in which the local control units of the subsystems exchange information, whenever this is necessary to fulfill an overall control aim. The local control units act in a self-organized way, which means that they adapt their communication structure depending on the current situation of the subsystems based on locally available information only. A new controller structure is proposed. The local control units are divided into three components fulfilling universal tasks to generate a situation-dependent communication structure: The feedback unit performs a local feedback by using local measurements to fulfill basic performance requirements. The observation unit detects the current situation of the subsystem by evaluating locally available information. The decision unit decides about the transmission of information from the corresponding subsystem to other local control units. Two self-organizing controllers for physically interconnected systems in which the local control units adapt the communication among each other depending on the current disturbances are introduced. Furthermore, three novel self-organizing controllers for synchronizing multi-agent systems within leader-follower structures by adapting the communication structure to situations like set-point changes, disturbances and communication faults are proposed. The concepts are applied in order to control a water supply system and a robot formation.

Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction to networked control systems and describes new modeling paradigms, analysis methods for event-driven, digitally networked systems, and design methods for distributed estimation and control. Networked model predictive control is developed as a means to tolerate time delays and packet loss brought about by the communication network. In event-based control the traditional periodic sampling is replaced by state-dependent triggering schemes. Novel methods for multi-agent systems ensure complete or clustered synchrony of agents with identical or with individual dynamics. The book includes numerous references to the most recent literature. Many methods are illustrated by numerical examples or experimental results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a major problem for today’s large-scale networked systems: certification of the required stability and performance properties using analytical and computational models. On the basis of illustrative case studies, it demonstrates the applicability of theoretical methods to biological networks, vehicle fleets, and Internet congestion control. Rather than tackle the network as a whole —an approach that severely limits the ability of existing methods to cope with large numbers of physical components— the book develops a compositional approach that derives network-level guarantees from key structural properties of the components and their interactions. The foundational tool in this approach is the established dissipativity theory, which is reviewed in the first chapter and supplemented with modern computational techniques. The book blends this theory with the authors’ recent research efforts at a level that is accessible to graduate students and practising engineers familiar with only the most basic nonlinear systems concepts. Code associated with the numerical examples can be downloaded at extras.springer.com, allowing readers to reproduce the examples and become acquainted with the relevant software.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the stabilization and model predictive control of interconnected systems with mixed connection configurations. It introduces the concept of dissipation-based quadratic constraint for developing attractivity assurance methods for interconnected systems. In order to develop these methods, distributed and decentralized architectures are employed, whereby the communication between subsystems is fully connected, partially connected, or completely disconnected. Given that the control inputs are entirely or partially decoupled between subsystems and no additional constraints are imposed on the interactive variables beyond the coupling constraint itself, the proposed approaches can be used with various types of systems and applications. Further, the book describes how the effects of coupling delays and data losses in device networks are resolved. From a practical perspective, the innovations presented are of benefit in applications in a broad range of fields, including the process and manufacturing industries, networked robotics, and network-centric systems such as chemical process systems, power systems, telecommunication networks, transportation networks, and, no less importantly, supply chain automation.

Book excerpt: This book reports on a set of new techniques for resolving current issues in networked control systems. The main focus is on strategies for event-based control, for both centralized and decentralized architectures. The first part of the book addresses the problem of single-loop networked control systems and proposes an anticipative remote controller for dealing with delays and packet losses. The second part of the book proposes a distributed event-based control strategy for networked dynamical systems, which has been implemented in a test-bed of mobile robots, and provides readers with a thorough description of an interactive simulator used to validate the results. This thesis, examined at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia in 2013, received the award for best thesis in control engineering from the Control Engineering group of the Spanish Committee of Automatic Control in 2015.

This carefully edited book presents how natural groupings such as fish schools, bird flocks, deer herds etc. coordinate themselves and move so flawlessly, often without an apparent leader or any form of centralized control. It shows how the underlying principles of cooperative control may be used for groups of mobile autonomous agents to help enable a large group of autonomous robotic vehicles in the air, on land or sea or underwater, to collectively accomplish useful tasks such as distributed, adaptive scientific data gathering, search and rescue, or reconnaissance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a time-delay approach to the analysis and synthesis of networked control systems (NCSs) under communication constraints. Differently from other approaches, the time-delay approach to NCSs allows communication delays to be larger than the sampling intervals in the presence of scheduling protocols. The book starts from a comprehensive introduction to three main approaches to sampled-data and networked control. It then focuses on time-delay approach, and the modelling of the closed-loop systems in the form of time-delay system. It presents discontinuous (in time) Lyapunov functional constructions that are efficient for NCSs in the presence of communications delays. Further, it highlights time-delay approaches developed to model and analyze NCSs under communication constraints, with a particular focus on dynamic quantization, round-robin, try-once-discard and stochastic protocols. The results are first presented for the continuous-time NCSs and then extended to discrete-time NCSs. Discussing recent developments in Lyapunov-based analysis of NCSs under communication constraints, the book is a valuable resource for researchers interested in sampled-data and networked control, and time-delay systems, as well as for graduate students in automatic control and systems theory.

Book excerpt: This book provides a decentralized approach for the identification and control of robotics systems. It also presents recent research in decentralized neural control and includes applications to robotics. Decentralized control is free from difficulties due to complexity in design, debugging, data gathering and storage requirements, making it preferable for interconnected systems. Furthermore, as opposed to the centralized approach, it can be implemented with parallel processors. This approach deals with four decentralized control schemes, which are able to identify the robot dynamics. The training of each neural network is performed on-line using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The first indirect decentralized control scheme applies the discrete-time block control approach, to formulate a nonlinear sliding manifold. The second direct decentralized neural control scheme is based on the backstepping technique, approximated by a high order neural network. The third control scheme applies a decentralized neural inverse optimal control for stabilization. The fourth decentralized neural inverse optimal control is designed for trajectory tracking. This comprehensive work on decentralized control of robot manipulators and mobile robots is intended for professors, students and professionals wanting to understand and apply advanced knowledge in their field of work.
