Book Synopsis Storytelling for Lawyers by : Philip Meyer
Download or read book Storytelling for Lawyers written by Philip Meyer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good lawyers have an ability to tell stories. Whether they are arguing a murder case or a complex financial securities case, they can capably explain a chain of events to judges and juries so that they understand them. The best lawyers are also able to construct narratives that have an emotional impact on their intended audiences. But what is a narrative, and how can lawyers go about constructing one? How does one transform a cold presentation of facts into a seamless story that clearly and compellingly takes readers not only from point A to point B, but to points C, D, E, F, and G as well? In Storytelling for Lawyers, Phil Meyer explains how. He begins with a pragmatic theory of the narrative foundations of litigation practice and then applies it to a range of practical illustrative examples: briefs, judicial opinions and oral arguments. Intended for legal practitioners, teachers, law students, and even interdisciplinary academics, the book offers a basic yet comprehensive explanation of the central role of narrative in litigation. The book also offers a narrative tool kit that supplements the analytical skills traditionally emphasized in law school as well as practical tips for practicing attorneys that will help them craft their own legal stories.
Book Synopsis Right Brain Education by : Pamela Sue Hickein
Download or read book Right Brain Education written by Pamela Sue Hickein and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 10th Anniversary Edition - Celebrating 30 years of success with a truly holistic form of early childhood education that enriches both sides of the brain while honoring the heart. Right Brain Education is an exciting learning method developed to help utilize both sides of the brain - the logical left brain and the (generally under-utilized) creative right brain. At a time when our attention is on testing results, No Child Left Behind, budget deficits, teacher layoffs, and poor student performance, we are asked by Pamela to reconsider how different learning could be if we started with the heart and moved on from there. This book describes Pamela's educational experimentations over a 30-year period in which she has made discoveries that take us farther into new dimensions of teaching and learning that engage the whole brain, both conscious and unconscious.Children and adults alike can learn how to enhance the abilities of the right side of the brain, nurturing one's natural photographic memory and speed-learning capabilities, so that the "whole brain" is equally engaged. When both sides of the brain are used, a person's true genius can shine! Hickein's heart-based approach to right-brain learning consists of two main programs, which correspond to two distinct stages of development: TweedleWink early learning program (ages 0-6) and Wink (ages 6 +) to enhance photographic memory, enabling speed-learning and more. This EXPANDED version includes over 100 additional pages, including: updated brain research, a how-to guide for each of the 12 TweedleWink techniques, DIY material ideas, Wink right brain exercises (yes, right in the book!), age-by-age lesson charts and easy-to-follow guides.
Book Synopsis Collected Works of Velimir Khlebnikov: Letters and theoretical writings by : Велимир Хлебников
Download or read book Collected Works of Velimir Khlebnikov: Letters and theoretical writings written by Велимир Хлебников and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dubbed by his fellow Futurists the "King of Time," Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922) spent his entire brief life searching for a new poetic language to express his convictions about the rhythm of history, the correspondence between human behavior and the "language of the stars." The result was a vast body of poetry and prose that has been called hermetic, incomprehensible, even deranged. Of all this tragic generation of Russian poets (including Blok, Esenin, and Mayakovsky), Khlebnikov has been perhaps the most praised and the more censured. This first volume of the Collected Works, an edition sponsored by the Dia Art Foundation, will do much to establish the counterimage of Khlebnikov as an honest, serious writer. The 117 letters published here for the first time in English reveal an ebullient, humane, impractical, but deliberate working artist. We read of the continuing involvement with his family throughout his vagabond life (pleas to his smartest sister, Vera, to break out of the mold, pleas to his scholarly father not to condemn and to send a warm overcoat); the naive pleasure he took in being applauded by other artists; his insistence that a young girl's simple verses be included in one of the typically outrageous Futurist publications of the time; his jealous fury at the appearance in Moscow of the Italian Futurist Marinetti; a first draft of his famous zoo poem ("O Garden of Animals!"); his seriocomic but ultimately shattering efforts to be released from army service; his inexhaustibly courageous confrontation with his own disease and excruciating poverty; and always his deadly earnest attempt to make sense of numbers, language, suffering, politics, and the exigencies of publication. The theoretical writings presented here are even more important than the letters to an understanding of Khlebnikov's creative output. In the scientific articles written before 1910, we discern foreshadowings of major patterns of later poetic work. In the pan-Slavic proclamations of 1908-1914, we find explicit connections between cultural roots and linguistic ramifications. In the semantic excursuses beginning in 1915, we can see Khlebnikov's experiments with consonants, nouns, and definitions spelled out in accessible, if arid, form. The essays of 1916-1922 take us into the future of Planet Earth, visions of universal order and accomplishment that no longer seem so farfetched but indeed resonate for modern readers.

Using the analytical tools of modern anthropology and psychology, Dodds asks, "Why should we attribute to the ancient Greeks an immunity from 'primitive' modes of thought which we do not find in any society open to our direct observation?" Praised by reviewers as "an event in modern Greek scholarship" and "a book which it would be difficult to over-praise," The Greeks and the Irrational was Volume 25 of the Sather Classical Lectures series.

Download or read book Fiji written by Daryl Tarte and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people have been in the unique position of being able to observe and record the dramatic changes that have taken place in the islands of Fiji over the past 80 years than fourth-generation citizen, Daryl Tarte. He writes emotively, in great detail, about his personal experience of growing up on a remote island during the colonial era, when races were segregated, and white people lived an elite existence. Following independence, he has been personally involved with many of the key economic, political and social activities that have evolved and enabled the nation to progress during the 20th century. These include the sugar industry, tourism, commerce and industry, religion, the media, women and of course, the coups. His observations into the complexities of leadership in these areas of national development are fascinating and perceptive. Much of the story is told through the eyes of the many people of all races with whom he has interacted. Fiji is made up of over 300 unique islands. Tarte has been to many of them, and in a final chapter he gives an insightful commentary of how different they all are.
