Book excerpt: This “fun, sassy, and colorful” guide to herbal medicine “contains a wealth of information and offers a deeply profound and personal approach to herbalism” (Rosemary Gladstar). Take charge of your wellbeing by reconnecting with your local plants—and with the land, elements, and seasons—through the 5 tools of Sensory Herbalism. This book has been written for anyone who has heard the whispers of the wild and has been stirred to know more—for those with a political conscience and for lovers of the outdoors. Whether you are new to the ways of herbs or already a practicing herbalist, it explains how you can take your physical and mental health into your own hands using the plants that grow around you. Sensory Herbalism is a unique system of health devised by the Seed Sistas over 20 years of practice. It combines traditional herbal knowledge with an understanding of how the elements (water, fire, air, earth and spirit) and the ever-changing seasons interact with the human body. Their approach blends science, medicine, creativity, ritual, magic, and fun into 5 practical, easy-to-use tools that help readers develop their own relationship with their local medicinal plants: • Observation • Intuition • Interpretation • Characterization • Plant Dream Creation Illustrated with 140 artworks, photographs, and diagrams, The Sensory Herbal Handbook will guide you on a journey throughout the year, deepening your knowledge of each season’s featured plants and enhancing your wellbeing with herbal medicines, nutritious recipes, and healing rituals.

Book excerpt: Handbook of Innovations in CNS Regenerative Medicine provides a comprehensive overview of the CNS regenerative medicine field. The book describes the basic biology and anatomy of the CNS and how injury and disease affect its balance and the limitations of the present therapies used in the clinics. It also introduces recent trends in different fields of CNS regenerative medicine, including cell transplantation, bio and neuro-engineering, molecular/pharmacotherapy therapies and enabling technologies. Finally, the book presents successful cases of translation of basic research to first-in-human trials and the steps needed to follow this path. Areas such as cell transplantation approaches, bio and neuro-engineering, molecular/pharmacotherapy therapies and enabling technologies are key in regenerative medicine are covered in the book, along with regulatory and ethical issues. - Describes the basic biology and anatomy of the CNS and how injury and disease affect its balance - Discusses the limitations of present therapies used in the clinics - Introduces the recent trends in different fields of CNS regenerative medicine, including cell transplantation, bio and neuro-engineering, molecular/pharmacotherapy therapies, and enabling technologies - Presents successful cases of translation of basic research to first-in-human trials, along with the steps needed to follow this path

Book excerpt: The American edition of this handbook contains concise informa tion on the basic physical properties of the elements and on their chem ical characteristics. In general, the data selected for inclusion in the handbook are those which either agree well with calculated data (in those cases where calculations could be carried out) or satisfy various correlations, particularly those based on concepts of the distribution of valence electrons of isolated atoms in the formation of a condensed state, as electrons localized at atomic ions in the form of energetically stable configurations, and as nonlocalized electrons. The Russian edition was published in the USSR in 1965, and new or previously omitted data have been added to all the sections of the present edition. In addition, the authors have considered it necessary to include a series of new sections. Thus, a new table has been included, "Electronic Configurations and Ground States of Free Atoms and Their Ions," since, in the ionization of some atoms (particularly for transition metals), the electrons are not always abstracted from the outer shell, and, consequently, calculation of the ground state (electron energy level) using the usual vector model does not give a direct result. The ground states are obtained experimentally and the table contains the corresponding data on the configurations and states of triply-ionized atoms (which is usually sufficient).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral elements are found in foods and drink of all differenttypes, from drinking water through to mothers’ milk. Thesearch for mineral elements has shown that many trace andultratrace-level elements presented in food are required for ahealthy life. By identifying and analysing these elements, it ispossible to evaluate them for their specific health-givingproperties, and conversely, to isolate their less desirableproperties with a view to reducing or removing them altogether fromsome foods. The analysis of mineral elements requires a number ofdifferent techniques – some methods may be suitable for onefood type yet completely unsuited to another. The Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food is the firstbook to bring together the analytical techniques, the regulatoryand legislative framework, and the widest possible range of foodtypes into one comprehensive handbook for food scientists andtechnologists. Much of the book is based on the authors’ owndata, most of which is previously unpublished, making theHandbook of Mineral Elements in Food a vital andup-to-the-minute reference for food scientists in industry andacademia alike. Analytical chemists, nutritionists and food policymakers will also find it an invaluable resource. Showcasing contributions from international researchers, andconstituting a major resource for our future understanding of thetopic, the Handbook of Mineral Elements in Food is anessential reference and should be found wherever food science andtechnology are researched and taught.
