Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique new book addresses the rise of death studies as an academic discipline, and serves those who work in the anthropology of death and loss. It gives a perspective on death, with reference to Maoists politics and violence in Nepal, so will also appeal to scholars of the region, and its Maoists movements. This work aims to add and contribute to cultural and regional perspective in death studies. There has been little written on death studies in conflict situations, from a South Asian perspective. Therefore, this book extends the current literature in death and bereavement perspectives beyond western academic exploration.

Book Synopsis Making Globalization Happen by : Vijayashri Sripati
Download or read book Making Globalization Happen written by Vijayashri Sripati and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Making Globalization Happen: The Untold Story of Power, Profits, Privilege, Sripati explains how, when, through which entities, and for what purposes economic globalization was catalyzed and its effects on the Global South in general and South Asia in particular. Based on an innovative international constitutional political economy framework, Sripati examines how the Western classical liberal constitution has shaped international law developments in this post-colonial era given its salience and comprehensive scope. Presenting a comprehensive narrative of economic globalization, Making Globalization Happen accurately and comprehensively links constitutional globalization to the following UN family-created agendas: peacebuilding, conflict prevention, human security, protection of civilians, sustainable development, global war on terrorism, women, peace, and security, poverty reduction or market-oriented development, ending conflict-related sexual violence, and justice (climate, criminal, and transitional). Sripati simultaneously provides the missing constitutional foundation for globalization and the fields that it has spawned: global studies and law and political economy. With these ground-breaking insights, Making Globalization Happen: The Untold Story of Power, Profits, Privilege clearly illustrates who drove constitutional globalization and for whose benefit: the UN family and transnational capitalists. Thus, it rips away the facade of UN family-driven peace, justice, human rights, democracy, and development to expose it as a narrative of power, profit, and privilege for transnational capitalists and debt, death, and despair for the Global South.

Book Synopsis Redefining Regional Power in International Relations by : Miriam Prys
Download or read book Redefining Regional Power in International Relations written by Miriam Prys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the concept of regional power in international relations. Using the emerging powers of India and South Africa as the case studies, it explores how regional powers simultaneously differ and share common features. The book develops a method to classify and evaluate different types of regional powers and applies this typology to contemporary case studies of India and South Africa. Regional power is often expected to have a positive influence on region-specific problems of conflict, economic deprivation and political instability. In reality, an ‘achievement-expectations gap’ can be seen in many regional powers, which can be analysed and understood through observable variation in regional power. The author discovers that in addition to the management of the internal regional order, regional powers have to establish individuality whilst fitting into the global international environment, altering both regional dynamics and creating variance in the level of control within the region. Elucidating concepts and definitions, this book is an accessible and in-depth study that both introduces key concepts and provides a framework for the future study of regional power in international relations. Redefining Regional Power in International Relations will be of interest to students and scholars of regionalism and international relations.

Book Synopsis Building Sustainable Peace by : Arnim Langer
Download or read book Building Sustainable Peace written by Arnim Langer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries emerging from civil war or protracted violence often face the daunting challenge of rebuilding their economy while simultaneously creating the political and social conditions for a stable peace. The implicit assumption in the international community that rapid political democratisation along with economic liberalisation holds the key to sustainable peace is belied by the experiences of countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Often, the challenges of post-conflict reconstruction revolve around the timing and sequencing of different reform that may have contradictory implications. Drawing on a range of thematic studies and empirical cases, this book examines how post-conflict reconstruction policies can be better sequenced in order to promote sustainable peace. The book provides evidence that many reforms that are often thought to be imperative in post-conflict societies may be better considered as long-term objectives, and that the immediate imperative for such societies should be 'people-centred' policies.

Book Synopsis Who is a Normative Foreign Policy Actor? by : Daniel Sheldon Hamilton
Download or read book Who is a Normative Foreign Policy Actor? written by Daniel Sheldon Hamilton and published by CEPS. This book was released on 2008 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book investigates "Who is a normative foreign policy actor?" It forms part of a new project intended to explore fundamental aspects of foreign policy at the global level, against the backdrop of a proliferation of global actors in the 21st century, following half a century with only one undisputed global hegemon: the United States. The European Union is itself a new or emerging foreign policy actor, driven by self-declared normative principles. But Russia, China and India are also increasingly assertive actors on the global stage and similarly claim to be driven by a normative agenda. The fundamental question explored is how will these various global actors define their foreign policy priorities, and how they will interact, especially if their ideas of normative behaviour differ?"--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Maoists in Nepal by : Bhuwan Chandra Upreti
Download or read book Maoists in Nepal written by Bhuwan Chandra Upreti and published by Gyan Publishing House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is an attempt to understand the problem of Maoist insurgency in Nepal since its inception to the withdrawal of the insurgency and the Maoist joining the political mainstream. The Maoist decision in 2006 to join the multi party democracy has not only given a new dimension to Nepali politics but it also raises a number of questions of academic interest. Why did Maoist take a U-turn? What are the problems and prospects of republican state and inclusive democracy in Nepal? How does the Maoist look at their political future in the upcoming political system of Nepal? These are the issues that his book has tried to focus upon. The study runs into seven chapter viz. COMMUNIST MOVEMENT IN NEPAL: HISTORICO-POLITICAL CONTEXT " A MOVEMENT IN THE MAKING PARTIES, GOVERNANCE AND POLITICS BETWEEN 1990-95 " MAOIST IDEOLOGY, ORGANIZATION AND STRATEGY " MAOIST SUPPORT BASES, FACTORS AND FORCES " GROWTH OF MAOIST MOVEMENT " MAOIST MOVEMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES " TAKING A 'U' TURN: MAOISTS JOINNING THE POLITICAL MAINSTREAM " The study is designed to discuss the Maoist problems in their total perspective: from its emergence to their joinning the mainstream politics and afterwards. It is hoped that the book will be useful to both academics and the general readers.

Book Synopsis The Challenge to Democracy in Nepal by : T. Louise Brown
Download or read book The Challenge to Democracy in Nepal written by T. Louise Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990 Nepal's Peoples Movement reduced King Birendra from an absolute ruler to a constitutional monarch. This book is the first academic analysis of these events and places the 'revolution' of 1990 within the context of Nepali history. Louise Brown examines the background to Nepal's recent upheavals as well as covering the country's ealy history and its continuing problems of national integration. The previous, unsuccessful, democratic experiment and the nature of monarchical rule are discussed within an analysis of Nepal's social and economic modernisation. The evolution of political parties, Nepal's foreign relations and development issues - and the way in which these have moulded the political system - are explored in depth. Drawing on extensive interviews with leading politicians and influential figures the author provides a comprehensive survey of the Himalayan Kingdom's political development. This is an original contribution to the debate on democratization in the developing world.
