Book Synopsis Face to Face by : Hans-Michael Herzog
Download or read book Face to Face written by Hans-Michael Herzog and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2008 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its emergence in the 1980s and 90s, the Daros Collection in Zurich has accumulated about 280 works by 30 outstanding North American and European artists. It possesses one of the finest collections of early Warhol, and major works by Sigmar Polke, Barbara Kruger, Alfredo Jaar and Louise Bourgeois among many others. In 2000, when the strength and integrity of this collection had been established, the museum boldly struck off in a new direction, and the Daros Latin America Collection was founded. Already comprising roughly 1,000 works by around 100 artists including Carlos Amorales, José Bedia, Alfredo Jaar, Gego, Guillermo Kuitca, Vik Muniz, among others, it is now the largest collection of Latin American art in Europe--an exciting new resource that will doubtless have interesting long-term ramifications for contemporary European art. Face to Face is the first volume to bring the two Daros Collections together, thereby engaging these works--created in different media and of various cultural origin--in a dynamic dialogue that disrupts ordinary canon-oriented perspectives. Face to Face thus not only deepens our knowledge of the respective qualities of the two collections, but also explores the common characteristics of their cultural backgrounds.

Book Synopsis Resisting Categories: Latin American and/or Latino? by : Mari Carmen Ramirez
Download or read book Resisting Categories: Latin American and/or Latino? written by Mari Carmen Ramirez and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 1184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIV This first volume of the Critical Documents of 20th-Century Latin American and Latino Art series published by the International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents 168 crucial texts written by influential artists, critics, curators, journalists, and intellectuals whose writings shed light on questions relating to what it means to be "Latin American" and/or "Latino." Reinforced within a critical framework, the documents address converging issues, including: the construct of "Latin-ness" itself; the persistent longing for a continental identity; notions of Pan–Latin Americanism; the emergence of collections and exhibitions devoted specifically to "Latin American” or "Latino" art; and multicultural critiques of Latin American and Latino essentialism. The selected documents, many of which have never before been published in English, span from the late fifteenth century to the present day. They encompass key protagonists of this comprehensive history as well as unfamiliar figures, revealing previously unknown facets of the questions and issues at play. The book series complements the thousands of seminal documents now available through the ICAA Documents of 20th-Century Latin American and Latino Art digital archive, http://icaadocs.mfah.org. Together they establish a much-needed intellectual foundation for the exhibition, collection, and interpretation of art produced in Latin America and among Latino populations in the United States. /div
Download or read book Rio written by Orde Morton and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rio de Janeiro’s is a lush, complex history that spans five centuries, and Marvelous City is the first full length retelling of that history written in English. From the beach life of the Ipanema and Copacabana to the struggles of the Rio’s infamous favelas, this is a story of contrast and contradiction. We are offered a glimpse into Rio’s high society and rich culture and are shown the endemic violence, corruption, and social disparity with which it struggles to this day. With its populist politics and its unique blend of European, African and Amerindian influences, Rio de Janeiro has grown, over the centuries, into a place all its own, one that is greater than the sum of its parts, distinctively Brazilian, and whose symbol is the Rio Carnaval, the greatest show on earth. The beating cultural heart of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is poised to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Author Orde Morton invites you to look beyond the postcard perfection of its natural beauty and discover this one of a kind city in all its many-sided wonder.
Download or read book Phil Cross written by Phil Cross and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Phil's new book Gypsy Joker To A Hells Angel is based on 44 years as a Hells Angel. Photos & stories are a must read for all motorcycle riders" - Sonny Barger In the early 1960s, a young Navy vet, motorcyclist, amateur photographer, and rebel named Phil Cross joined a motorcycle club called the Hells Angels. It turned out to be a bogus chapter of the club that would soon find infamy, so he switched to another club called the Night Riders. Like the bogus chapter of the Hells Angels, this turned out to be a club whose brotherhood was run by a man Mr. Cross describes as “a complete asshole.” One day, Mr. Cross stuffed the leader in a ringer-type washing machine and joined a club called the Gypsy Jokers. He started a San Jose chapter of the Jokers and embarked on the most action-packed years of his life. The Jokers were in the midst of a shooting war with the real Hells Angels. The fighting became so intense that the Jokers posted snipers atop their clubhouse. This was a rough time, but it was also the height of the free-love hippie era, and as a young man, Phil enjoyed himself to the fullest. He never let anything as minor as a little jail time stop his fun. Once, while serving time for fighting and fleeing an officer, Phil broke out of jail, entered his bike in a bike show, won the bike show, and broke back into jail before anyone discovered he was missing. Though Phil was tough—he was a certififed martial arts instructor—the Angels proved a tough foe. After multiple beating-induced emergency room visits, Mr. Cross decided that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, so he and most of his club brothers patched over to become the San Jose chapter of the Hells Angels. This book chronicles the life and wild times of Mr. Cross in words and photos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...a refreshingly honest and authentic war memoir." — The VVA Veteran It took courage and a certain sense of wild adventure to be a combat medic during the Vietnam War, and William 'Doc' Osgood exemplified their daring attitude. Doc would see combat throughout South Vietnam, spending much of his time deep in the bush far from the relative safety of base camps. With the less than encouraging words that “you’ll be dead in 15 seconds” still ringing in his ears, Doc embarked on an eventful and at times harrowing combat tour that pitted the famed 101st Airborne Division against some of the North Vietnamese Army’s finest troops on the battlefields of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Hamburger Hill, and the deadly A Shau Valley. Doc would serve as the head medic with legendary Colonel Charlie Beckwith’s (creator of the US Army’s Delta Force) 2/327th, 101st Airborne Division, Hawk Recon in what was arguably one of the most dangerous jobs in the deadliest part of South Vietnam. Doc also became an unofficial combat artist during the war.
