Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nelly Custis Lewis, George Washington's adopted daughter, for over thirty years was the mistress of Woodlawn, a large and elegant Virginia plantation. Plantations were virtually self-sufficient, so that recipes for household cleaners, home remedies, and the care and dyeing of clothing, were essential for such a large household. The lady of the plantation was also responsible for providing huge and varied meals in pre-refrigeration days. During the 1830s, Mrs. Lewis kept the housekeeping book presented here. It is a collection of recipes and remedies which is interesting for its reflection of nineteenth-century plantation life. Many of the recipes may also be used with success today" --Dust jacket flap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While written sources on the history of Greece have been studied extensively, no systematic attempt has been made to examine photography as an important cultural and material process. This is surprising, given that Modern Greece and photography are almost peers: both are cultural products of the 1830s, and both actively converse with modernity. Camera Graeca: Photographs, Narratives, Materialities fills this lacuna. It is the first inter-disciplinary volume to examine critically and in a theorised manner the entanglement of Greece with photography. The book argues that photographs and the photographic process as a whole have been instrumental in the reproduction of national imagination, in the consolidation of the nation-building process, and in the generation and dissemination of state propaganda. At the same time, it is argued that the photographic field constitutes a site of memory and counter-memory, where various social actors intervene actively and stake their discursive, material, and practical claims. As such, the volume will be of relevance to scholars and photographers, worldwide. The book is divided into four, tightly integrated parts. The first, ’Imag(in)ing Greece’, shows that the consolidation of Greek national identity constituted a material-cum-representational process, the projection of an imagery, although some photographic production sits uneasily within the national canon, and may even undermine it. The second part, ’Photographic narratives, alternative histories’, demonstrates the narrative function of photographs in diary-keeping and in photobooks. It also examines the constitution of spectatorship through the combination of text and image, and the role of photography as a process of materializing counter-hegemonic discourses and practices. The third part, ’Photographic matter-realities’, foregrounds the role of photography in materializing state propaganda, national memory, and war. The final part, ’Photographic ethnographiesâ

Download or read book See Through written by Nelly Reifler and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heartbreaking and haunting, wholly inventive, the unforgettable stories of Nelly Reifler's debut collection, See Through, imagine a world where the emotional logic of our dreams and childhood fantasies rule our actions. In the title story, an educated young woman sits behind the glass of a talk booth in a peep show and becomes a different girl for each man who visits. A thorn in a little girl's scalp becomes the physical locus for her painter father's grief and helplessness following his wife's leaving in "The Splinter." "Teeny" tells the story of an awkward, solitary pubescent girl who can't bring herself to perform the simple task of feeding the vacationing neighbors' cats. In "Baby," an infant asks his mother existential questions that are impossible to answer. Nelly Reifler, winner of the Henfield/Transatlantic Review Prize for two of the stories in this collection, explores her characters' psyches and motivations with the precision of an anthropologist, detailing their physical urges and fears, and the desire, isolation, and violence that drive -- and sometimes consume -- them. But more than her desire to expose splintered personalities, Reifler plumbs the deep chasm between expectations and reality with infinite hope, warmth, and wisdom. A powerful and extraordinary collection, See Through heralds the arrival of a significant new voice in contemporary fiction.

Download or read book Nelly Dean written by Alison Case and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping and heartbreaking novel that re-imagines life at Wuthering Heights through the eyes of the Earnshaws’ loyal servant, Nelly Dean. Young Nelly Dean has been Hindley’s closest companion for as long as she can remember, living freely at the great house, Wuthering Heights. But when the benevolence of the master brings a wild child into the house, Nelly learns she must follow in her mother’s footsteps, be called "servant" and give herself over completely to the demands of the Earnshaw family. But Nelly is not the only one who finds her life disrupted by this strange newcomer. As death, illness, and passion sweep through the house, Nelly suffers heartache and betrayals at the hands of those she cherishes most, tempting her to leave it all behind. But when a new heir is born, a reign of violence begins that will test even Nelly’s formidable spirit as she finds out what it is to know true sacrifice. Nelly Dean is a wonderment of storytelling and an inspired accompaniment to Emily Bronte’s adored work. It is the story of a woman who is fated to bear the pain of a family she is unable to leave, and unable to save.
