Molti testi ritrovati dimostrano che per gli antichi Egiziani, Maat era la luce solare che infondeva la vita. Quindi, per loro, la giustizia consisteva nel far circolare la vita nel microcosmo e nel macrocosmo: uno scopo del tutto ignorato dalla giustizia moderna! Una volta trovata questa chiave di comprensione, i testi egiziani che parlano di Maat e l'iconografia (specialmente la scena chiamata "della psicostasia" o "del giudizio dei morti" che mostra Maat in azione) rivelano all'uomo moderno i loro "segreti." Questo studio universitario, basato sulle fonti accademiche dell'egittologia, della filosofia del diritto e della storia delle religioni apre nuovi orizzonti per capire meglio questa affascinante civilt e approfittare delle sue conoscenze sull'energia solare e sulla maniera di usarla per creare un mondo prospero materialmente e "vitalmente," cio pieno di vita, di felicit, di salute mentale e fisica. Successivamente i risultati delle ricerche archeologiche confortate delle datazioni al radiocarbonio hanno dimostrato che fosse necessaria una riscrittura della storia d’Israele, riscrittura che comunque non incrinava la tesi che uno stato d’Israele potente e unitario fosse realmente esistito sotto Davide e Salomone, e che fosse realmente esistito un ‘Primo Tempio’. Ma la più recente critica mette in dubbio anche il concetto stesso di regno unito, mettendo così in crisi il racconto biblico, negando anche un collegamento tra i regni Israele e ai tempi della loro nascita. Ma l’autore, dopo una lunga ricerca ed in base a quanto da lui rilevato, ipotizza che questo non sia corretto, in quanto ai tempi dei re Davide e Salomone esisteva effettivamente un potente regno di Giuda, ma che non risiedeva a Gerusalemme, così come Salomone fece costruire un monumentale Tempio, ma sempre non a Gerusalemme. L’autore ritiene che questi due re vissero e regnarono in Egitto, e che, come i loro antenati Patriarchi, fossero dei faraoni appartenenti al potente impero Hyksos, che fondarono la XV dinastia ed anche la XXII, entrambe governate da sovrani appartenevano alla discendenza di Terach, il padre di Abramo. Questi importanti personaggi che infine riuscirono ad impadronirsi del potere in Egitto dovevano già avere conquistato un vasto territorio che andava dalla Mesopotamia al fiume Nilo, comprendenti anche il regno di Edom in Transgiordania, dove governarono Seir, che corrispondeva ad Abramo, il figlio Ismaele ed Esaù, che ereditò il trono prendendo in sposa una figlia di Ismaele, che portava una titolatura che comprendeva Maaca-Bashemat.

Wooden, papyrus and alabaster boxes and chests were used to hold, protect and store valuable objects, toilet utensils, instruments, tools, garments, curtains, game pieces and papyri amongst other things. Those from the Old Kingdom usually had flat lids and solid board sides, tied together at the corners. During later periods carcase construction became so sophisticated, with the introduction of frame and panel work, that it was possible to construct barrel, shrine and pent-shaped lids. Later chests were elaborately painted, some with funerary scenes, painted with hieroglyphs or had gilt fretwork decoration applied to the sides and lid. This book is copiously illustrated with drawings and photographs and contains a catalogue of additional known pieces of Egyptian furniture preserved in museum collections.

Book excerpt: This volume offers the first comprehensive overview of the evolution over time of a foundational concept of the Egyptian afterlife beliefs, the Duat, or netherworld. The Duat is a complicated, multifaceted notion, which was never canonized into a single version of the beyond, but offered instead a variety of alternatives attempting to describe the metaphysical realms beyond the visible world, and beyond life. Theological speculations gave rise to a rich textual and visual repertoire, which underwent a process of evolution over thousands of years, during which newer ideas and images were constantly introduced. Through the analysis of royal and non-royal funerary texts from the late Old Kingdom to the end of the New Kingdom, this book traces the development of the conceptualization of the notion of Duat, outlining what it encompassed and where it was imagined to be located. In addition to the translation and discussion of the most significant passages of the texts analyzed, each chapter also provides an overview of the individual compositions and of the relevant theological, cosmological, and astronomical notions complementing the conceptual framework, of which the Duat formed but a part. Additionally, discussions of concurrent changes in Egyptian culture, society, and ideology are included in order to clarify the context in which afterlife beliefs and related texts evolved. An analysis of the correlation between funerary compositions and their material supports complements the study, emphasizing the Egyptians' belief in a magical synergy between texts, images, and their contexts in the activation of a suitable, effective afterlife for the recipients of the texts.

This collection of papers focuses on one particularly important aspect of foreign trade: the importation of aromatic products. Contributors present the results of the latest researches into the origin and meaning of foreign aromatic products imported in Egypt from the south (Nubia, Punt, Arabia, Horn of Africa) from the beginning of the Dynastic period. The quest for aromata has been of crucial importance in Egypt, since it was closely connected with economic, political, ideological, religious, and mythic spheres. Through archaeological research, epigraphic analysis, and iconographic investigations new evidence is explored supporting the most likely hypothesis about the sources of these raw materials. The study of related documents has revealed possible linguistic links between ancient Egyptian and other ancient African languages, and a strong link between aromata and the divine world through the creation of many Egyptian myths. The references to some specific aromatic products (ti-shepes, snetjer, antyw, hesayt) have been subject to careful lexicographic analysis, with special reference to Old Kingdom occurrences. Iconographic and field investigations documented here seek to better define the Egyptian way of representing the 'foreign' world and the value of its products in the spheres of Egyptian religiosity and rising Pharaonic ideology.
