Download or read book A Bunch of Old Letters written by Jawaharlal (ed.) and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2005 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Letters In This Volume, Written By Some Of The Leading Figures Of Our Times, Cover The Three Eventful Decades Leading Up To India S Independence In 1947. Evocative Of The Spirit Of Those Stirring Times, Many Of The Letters Are From Those Most Closely Involved In The Freedom Struggle Among Them, Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, Maulana Azad, Vallabhbhai Patel And Jayaprakash Narayan. Of Particular Interest Is The Long Correspondence Between Subhas Chandra Bose And Nehru, Which Covers The Crisis During The Tripuri Congress In 1939, And Reflects The Two Leaders Sharply Differing Views On The Mobilization Of National Resistance To British Rule. Equally Fascinating Are The Letters From Mahatma Gandhi, Which Reveal His Acute Political Instincts As Well As His Deep Humanity And His Genuine Respect For Dissent. The Letters Also Bear Testimony To Jawaharlal Nehru S Extraordinary Gift For Friendship, And The Respect And Admiration He Evoked, Both Personally And For The Cause Of Indian Independence, From World Figures As Diverse As George Bernard Shaw, Romain Rolland, Clare Boothe Luce, Edward Thompson, Chiang Kai-Shek And Bertrand Russell, Among Others. A Bunch Of Old Letters Is Essential Reading For An Understanding Of The History Of National Movement.

Book Synopsis In Quest of Jinnah by : Hector Bolitho
Download or read book In Quest of Jinnah written by Hector Bolitho and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest travail to be undertaken by writers is that of the official biographer. In 1953, Beverly Nichols suggested Hector Bolitho, the New Zealand born biographer of Prince Albert, as the person best suited to write the biography of Pakistan's founder, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Quaid-i-Azam and first Governor-General. Hector Bolitho's Jinnah: Creator of Pakistan (1954) became his most celebrated and influential book. Frustrated however, at what he was not allowed to write or include, Bolitho preserved for scholars the first draft of his biography, his diary and notes, his correspondence with Government of Pakistan functionaries and highly placed individuals in Britain, India and Pakistan who had known Jinnah personally, and the English and American reviews of the book's published version. All of this material is present in this volume. In Quest of Jinnah which gives not only a stereovision of the original published version, but offers fresh and authentic insights into the personality and politics of Mohammed Ali Jinnah. It is a very rare version. To compile and edit such a vast volume of valuable material, an extraordinary scholar of Jinnah and Academy, doyen of Jinnah scholars in Pakistan and author of Jinnah Studies in Interpretation (1981), not only retrieved the material present in this volume but very carefully and meticulously edited it, to create a user-friendly volume for both the scholar and the general reader.

Book excerpt: From being elected as Congress president in 1929 till his death in 1964, Jawaharlal Nehru remained a towering figure in Indian politics, a man who left an indelible stamp on the history of South Asia. As a leading light of the nationalist struggle and as India's first and longest-serving prime minister, his ideas shaped the political contours of the country and left an imprint so deep that his legacy continues to be debated furiously today. In life, as in afterlife, Nehru was many things to many people. Going beyond the imposed labels of contemporary discourse, this book illuminates four encounters that Nehru had with contemporaries from across the political spectrum - Muhammad Iqbal, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Sardar Patel and Syama Prasad Mookerjee - that are critical to understanding his ideas, and his long afterlife and impress on the present. Nehru may no longer be alive to answer his critics today, but there was a time when he pitted himself vigorously against his opponents in the marketplace of ideas, debating the most profound questions in South Asian history and decisively influencing political events. It is this intellectually combative Nehru whom we meet in this book - voicing ideological disagreements, forging political alliances, moulding political opinion, offering visions of the future and staking out the political field - a key figure in the debates that defined India
