Book excerpt: This dissertation examines how second generation Indian-American youth in the United States are negotiating and transforming the practice of arranged marriage. The tradition of arranged marriage has been modeled in their families for generations, but these youth are growing up in a cultural context that highly values freedom of choice and embraces autonomy, as well as validates various alternative lifestyles other than marriage. The bicultural identities of second generation Indian-American youth provide a framework for their decisions about future marriage. Little is known about how Indian-American youth view the preservation of cultural and familial marriage traditions. Through the use of a three part survey on the topics of marriage, choice and emotional expression, as well as in-depth interviews, this project explored how Indian-American youth formulate their constructions of marriage, and how they are situated amid many influences of modern western society. A social constructivist approach was utilized to elicit detailed descriptions of the perceptions and insights of the youth subjects, aged 15 to 21. This enabled the formulation of theory grounded in the lived experiences of these youth. Adults aged 30-61 also completed surveys and interviews to provide parental viewpoints in order to discern generational differences. Subjects were located in New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. The primary finding of this research is that second generation Indian-American youth are not completely rejecting or indiscriminately resisting the practice of arranged marriage. They are open to matchmaking, but they desire choice in the process. They embrace traditional family values, consider the guidance of their elders, and desire parental approval and blessing of their future marriage decisions. They negotiate parental rules, expectations and communications in a variety of ways to exert agency in decisions related to participation in premarital social activities. Though the influences of globalism and western culture impact how Indian-American youth shape their opinions and decisions, these forces have not erased their allegiance to Indian traditions.

To the contrary, others claim that individuals are becoming increasingly active in choosing and constructing their ethnic identities.Focusing on second-generation South Asian Americans, Bandana Purkayastha offers fresh insights into the subjective experience of race, ethnicity, and social class in an increasingly diverse America. The young people of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Nepalese origin that are the subjects of the study grew up in mostly white middle class suburbs, and their linguistic skills, education, and occupation profiles are indistinguishable from their white peers. By many standards, their lifestyles mark them as members of mainstream American culture. But, as Purkayastha shows, their ethnic experiences are shaped by their racial status as neither “white” nor “wholly Asian,” their continuing ties with family members across the world, and a global consumer industry, which targets them as ethnic consumers.” Drawing on information gathered from forty-eight in-depth interviews and years of research, this book illustrates how ethnic identity is negotiated by this group through choice—the adoption of ethnic labels, the invention of “traditions,” the consumption of ethnic products, and participation in voluntary societies. The pan-ethnic identities that result demonstrate both a resilient attachment to heritage and a celebration of reinvention. What can be gained from a deep analysis of the communicative patterns and strategies that actors engage in - the entailing text and talk of negotiations - is a better understanding of the process itself: how do different actors argue, what kind of strategies and rhetorics do they use, to which instruments and institutions do they refer, and in what way do actors react to each other? An analysis of communicative interactions contributes to the question of how international negotiations work. In this pivotal work of action and discourse analysis, Riva Kastoryano draws on extensive fieldwork--including interviews with politicians, immigrant leaders, and militants--to analyze interactions between states and immigrants in France and Germany. Making frequent comparisons to the United States, she delineates the role of states in constructing group identities and measures the impact of immigrant organization and mobilization on national identity. Kastoryano argues that states contribute directly and indirectly to the elaboration of immigrants' identity, in part by articulating the grounds on which their groups are granted legitimacy. Conversely, immigrant organizations demanding recognition often redefine national identity by reinforcing or modifying traditional sentiments. They use culture--national references in Germany and religion in France--to negotiate new political identities in ways that alter state composition and lead the state to negotiate its identity as well. Despite their different histories, Kastoryano finds that Germany, France, and the United States are converging in their policies toward immigration control and integration. All three have adopted similar tactics and made similar institutional adjustments in their efforts to reconcile differences while tending national integrity. The author builds her observations into a model of ''negotiations of identities'' useful to a broad cross-section of social scientists and policy specialists. She extends her analysis to consider how the European Union and transnational networks affect identities still negotiated at the national level. The result is a forward-thinking book that illuminates immigration from a new angle.

Book excerpt: The second generation assimilation experience reflects changing assumptions about what it means to be American. This study examines the ways in which one second generation group "becomes American" by analyzing their family experiences, dating and marriage choices and the ways in which they negotiate between the culture of their immigrant parents and mainstream expectations around individualism, autonomy and the navigation of mainstream gender norms. This dissertation focused on the experience of second generation South Asian Americans, and asked how they reconcile "American" ideas and norms around autonomy and egalitarianism with the "traditional" expectations of their families and ethnic communities? Using data from in-depth interviews of 60 male and female respondents between the ages of 21-40 and a life course approach, this study examined the adaptation and assimilation processes experienced by these second generation subjects, part of a largely middle and upper middle class cohort that is often described as the "children of 1965." This study uses a focus on dating and marriage strategies and choices to reveal the complex dilemmas and negotiations, variability and autonomy in the second generation experience. Through the use of qualitative data from interviews and employing a life course approach emphasizing the subjective experience of life choices, three life pathways emerged, the traditional pathway, the independence pathway and the ethnic rebellion pathway, showing this complexity and variability. Each of these pathways revealed different types of autonomy and negotiations of gender expectations, demonstrating the influence of childhood socialization combined with social structural and personal forces in shaping the trajectories individuals take. The social class privilege, family and community resources and model minority status of this second generation cohort resulted both in enhanced career opportunities and a diversity of life choices. Thus, this study demonstrates that the experiences of the second generation show great variability and that the structural circumstances of immigrants influence not just their economic attainment but their personal life choices as well.
