Book excerpt: This research examines the complexities of identity negotiation for African- American female students at both Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). It analyzes the intersections of gender, and race/ethnicity (among other salient attributes of social identity) as these women define, negotiate, and communicate their identities in both organizational settings. More specifically, it examines how these students navigate the different organizational settings of both HBCUs and PWIs while simultaneously negotiating self-defined aspects of their identities with notions projected onto them in these environments. In-depth interviews with co-researchers who have experience with both types of universities reveal that negotiating stereotypes of black women and their limited visibility in the curriculum can be difficult to manage, particularly at PWIs. Although the co-researchers report feeling invisible, they interestingly also feel hyper visible when interacting with professors and peers as they often feel placed into the role of the "educator" of African-American culture. Establishing boundaries and bringing in limited aspects of social identities often helps the co-researchers mitigate negative experiences they encounter and the tension they feel between their invisibility and hyper visibility. The co-researchers enjoy more of a racial and ethnic cultural fit at HBCUs, which makes identity negotiation easier for them. Gender causes much more of a concern for them in these environments. The co-researchers often engage in uncomfortable interactions with their peers and faculty members and feel the brunt of gender discriminatory attitudes and practices. Although many of the co-researchers have experienced gender-related discrimination, they still regard the HBCU as a positive environment for African-American women due to the supportive interactions with other African-American female peers and faculty members, which are not largely present in other academic environments. These results demonstrate how identity negotiation differs in different organizational contexts as people construct their social identities in manners that help them adjust to their educational settings. Having experiences at both PWIs and HBCUs helps African-American women learn to negotiate multiple organizations which prepares them for their professional goals while providing opportunities for personal growth and identity development.

To the contrary, others claim that individuals are becoming increasingly active in choosing and constructing their ethnic identities.Focusing on second-generation South Asian Americans, Bandana Purkayastha offers fresh insights into the subjective experience of race, ethnicity, and social class in an increasingly diverse America. The young people of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Nepalese origin that are the subjects of the study grew up in mostly white middle class suburbs, and their linguistic skills, education, and occupation profiles are indistinguishable from their white peers. By many standards, their lifestyles mark them as members of mainstream American culture. But, as Purkayastha shows, their ethnic experiences are shaped by their racial status as neither “white” nor “wholly Asian,” their continuing ties with family members across the world, and a global consumer industry, which targets them as ethnic consumers.” Drawing on information gathered from forty-eight in-depth interviews and years of research, this book illustrates how ethnic identity is negotiated by this group through choice—the adoption of ethnic labels, the invention of “traditions,” the consumption of ethnic products, and participation in voluntary societies. Book excerpt: This study investigates the ways in which mixed-race adolescents racially identify in our current racial climate, the relationships between racial identity and important life outcomes for this sample, and how the experience of schooling can be an important source of information in the development of a racial identity. Using a mixed-methods design, two types of analysis were employed. Statistical analysis was used on survey data revealing border racial identities are an overwhelmingly popular racial identity choice, regardless of participants' high schools' racial demographics or racial climate. This analysis also supports research with monoracially-identified samples that posits racial private regard is positively associated with social-psychological well-being and positive academic outcomes. Interview analysis supports the popularity of border identities, but as one of many shifting ethnic and racial identities employed for various reasons and with varying levels of agency. Interviews also reveal the ways in which high schools are places where mixed-race youth both endure microaggressions and seek out opportunities for ethnic racial socialization and understanding. Recommendations for further research and implications for practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 2000, explores the intersections of race, gender and gay identities in writings by contemporary American lesbians of colour in order to show how this subject is sometimes ignored, sometimes brutalised and is very rarely able to survive on her own terms by constructing her own identity acts of cultural revision. The author places the lesbian of colour in the context of current identity theories showing the ever-present blind spots within current theoretical paradigms, she then reads a variety of writings by lesbians of colour describing the possibilities that exist for these subjects in textual and social realities. The author shows the varied communities that threaten the existence of this subject, as well as the limits that dictate the subject's ability to create her self. By bridging Judith Butler's Gender Trouble and Gloria Anzaldua's New Mestiza she describes how lesbians of colour can survive numerous sites of hostility by constructing a positive identity within her home community through revising cultural traditions and history. After considering the power of these acts of revision, the author calls for the empowered performance of the mestiza state - the state of contradiction wherein the lesbian of colour finds herself. This book is the first to analyse creative and theoretical works by African American, Asian American, Latina and Native American communities and writers through the lens of lesbian studies. Authors include recognised figures such as Audre Lorde, Ana Castillo and Paula Gunn Allen, as well as lesser known authors like Best Brant, Natashia Lopez and Willyce Kim. It provides a corrective to Butler's empowering but essentially white vision of performing identity, so that lesbians of colour can claim their identities and remain tied to their own cultural traditions. Ultimately, the author asks for a reconsideration of the value of identity studies that articulate monolithic identities and whose analyses perpetuate what they seek to disrupt.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines how mixed-race individuals shape and negotiate their identities and where they situate themselves along the racial continuum. I share the stories of five individuals of African/Carribean/Lebanese and French-Canadian descent. This study is distinct in that it examines participants' negotiation of two White racially dominant groups, the Anglophone majority and Francophone linguistic minority who themselves differ in social and economic status. It was found that participants' self-identification as individuals of colour was not an indicator of their participation within subordinate groups. Participants chose to situate themselves at different locations on the racial continuum, either participating within Whiteness, Blackness or both. Negotiations within certain locations on the continuum was found to bring benefits, depend to some extent on phenotype, cause tension and contradiction, to be influenced by racism and racial consciousness and to be complicated by language and ethnicity.
