It was raining, of course. And he and Sylvie were arguing as he drove down the slick road. No one ever says what they were arguing about. Other people think it's not important. They do not know there is another story. The story that lurks between the facts. What they do not know—the cause of the argument—is crucial. So let me tell you...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This riveting account of the heroic contributions of thirty-five chaplains and missionaries during World War II is nearly impossible to put down . . . inspiring.” —The Boston Pilot In Soldiers of a Different Cloth, New York Times-bestselling author and military historian John Wukovits tells the inspiring story of thirty-five chaplains and missionaries who, while garnering little acclaim, performed extraordinary feats of courage and persistence during World War II. Ranging in age from twenty-two to fifty-three, these University of Notre Dame priests and nuns were counselor, friend, parent, and older sibling to the young soldiers they served. These chaplains experienced the horrors of the Death March in the Philippines and the filthy holds of the infamous Hell Ships. They dangled from a parachute while descending toward German fire at Normandy and shivered in Belgium’s frigid snows during the Battle of the Bulge. They languished in German and Japanese prison camps, and stood speechless at Dachau. Based on a vast collection of letters, papers, records, and photographs in the archives of the University of Notre Dame, as well as other contemporary sources, Wukovits brings to life these nearly forgotten heroes who served wherever duty sent them and wherever the war dictated. Wukovits intertwines their stories on the battlefronts with their memories of Notre Dame. In their letters to their superior in South Bend, Indiana, they often asked about campus, the Grotto, and the football team. Soldiers of a Different Cloth will fascinate and engage all readers interested in the history of World War II and alumni, friends, and fans of the Fighting Irish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Causation is one of the most controversial topics in philosophy. There is a wide range of philosophical accounts of causation, for example, the regularity account, the probabilistic account, the counterfactual account, the interventionist account, which can be all classified as 'difference-making' accounts; and the mechanistic account. Many argue that only one of these accounts is correct as there is only one type of causal relation (causal monism), while others maintain that there are multiple types of causation (causal pluralism). In addition, there are eliminativists argue that science has no need of causation at all, while primitivists maintain that causation is unanalysable. Recently, the difference-making and mechanistic approaches have dominated recent philosophical discussion of causation. Other approaches and positions have been insufficiently discussed and assessed, especially in the context of philosophy of science. This volume explores and examines alternative approaches to causation. It revisits causal primitivism and causal eliminativism in the context of recent literature. It further explores the pluralistic approach, the fictionalist approach, the inferentialist approach, and the informational approach. It also examines the application of the dispositional approach, the epistemic approach, and the powerful particulars approach to the natural and social sciences. Overall, the volume is complementary to the recent discussion on the difference-making and mechanistic approaches and sheds new light on the metaphysical, epistemological, conceptual and methodological issues on causation. As such, it provides foundations for further research and teaching of this hotly debated topic.

Book excerpt: Same Journey, Different Paths is a wonderfully comprehensive book written by parents and individuals with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). By sharing their stories and experiences, other parents and individuals with APD understand they are not alone. The authors of the book live all over the world, and found each other on social media sites, while looking for answers during their times of struggle. Through this connection, they started talking to one another, sharing advice, telling their stories, and developed relationships with one another. They now have a group of supportive people who can share in their unique experiences, help guide them through the process of getting help, and provide emotional support during those very difficult moments. Same Journey, Different Paths takes you into the life of each of these individuals, and helps you to understand the struggles encountered when trying to discover and cope with APD. The book also provides an in depth look into what Auditory Processing disorder is, including symptoms, causes, effects, getting a diagnosis, and treatments. It includes resources for obtaining more information, and a glossary of terms. Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is considered a "hidden" disorder, which is difficult to diagnose, and is often mistaken for something else. The literature and resources for someone with APD are minimal, which contributes to one feeling alone on their journey through discovery and treatment. The authors of Same Journey, Different Paths have combined their stories in this book so that others can learn through their experiences, and get the help they need to be successful in school and in life. Join these remarkable people on their journeys of living with Auditory Processing Disorder.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what the future holds for the United States and also for Israel? Surely a righteous God will not allow this country to continue in the downward spiral that is prevalent now. The bible gives a good foretelling of the events that await both of these countries. But there are so many different verses to contend with and they are scattered all through the bible. Also, there are so many different speakers who give an intelligent guess of what these events predict? I just don't understand. They all cannot be correct. Question, if THE WHOLE HOUSE OF ISRAEL will return, how will the people know that they are members? How will Israel feed the whole world? Will the sicknesses that the whole world is experiencing at this time ever be cured? How will the false messiah fool so many people into accepting him as a god? In 1953, I started listening to different preacher on the radio. Those messages on Israel seemed to have more guessing of future events than fact. The messages also changed with the preacher. In 1986, I started reading the bible and making notes of the verses that referred to Israel in the latter days. I ended up with ten pages front and back of scripture verses. I bought my first computer with an orange screen and started compiling and writing. In 1993, I sent a copy to a publisher but never heard anything back. My time for studying ceased due to my outside workload. My house burned in 2001 with a complete loss of everything including my orange computer. I started reading and compiling notes again. The book that you are reading is the end results of the four following years.

Will their deep feelings and desperate sacrifices be enough to keep them together, when everything else is pulling them apart? SOMEONE DIFFERENT is a story of how teenage love struggles to survive when the pressures of parents, prejudice and deprivation get firmly in its way. Set against the contrasting backdrops of an inner-city housing estate and an idyllic country estate, the book takes its readers on a dramatic, compelling and sometimes violent journey, in which the characters' only defence against all of this, is each other.

Book excerpt: What would the world be like if the Russians discovered how to beat us at our own capitalistic game, and began dumping inexpensive, quality goods on the world market? In this brand new novel, Mack Reynolds deposits us into just such a future. It is a world where America is rapidly being turned into a second-rate power as its industries go bankrupt. A world that is falling under the wheels of the Soviet juggernaut, peacefully and passively. It is a world where the U.S. has only one way to retaliate - by bringing a little religion into the Soviet Union, a very special religion.

Book excerpt: Before speaking at a national political convention about her experiences as a transgender person, the author struggled with the decision to come out - not just to her family but to the students at her university, where she was serving as student body president. She'd known she was a girl from her earliest memories, but it wasn't until a Facebook post announcing her truth went viral that she realized the impact her story could have on the country. Four years later, the author was one of the nation's most prominent transgender activists, walking the halls of the White House, advocating inclusive legislation, and addressing the country in the midst of a heated presidential election. She had also found her first love and future husband, a trans man and fellow activist, who complemented her in every way ... until cancer tragically intervened. This book is the author's story of love and loss and an account of the LGBTQ community's battle for equal rights.--adapted from dust jacket.
