Book excerpt: Multiphase computational fluid dynamics (M-CFD) codes are gaining acceptance in the nuclear industry for the prediction of thermal-hydraulic behavior, offering the potential to improve the operation, economics, and safety of current systems, and enhance the design of next generation reactors. The common approach when applying M-CFD methods to the bubbly flow regime is to use an Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model, which solves for averaged mass and momentum equations for liquid and gas phases, as well as the k-epsilon turbulence model with modifications to account for the presence of bubbles. The resulting partial differential equations require well-posed boundary conditions, with special treatment at the walls, where there exist strong gradients of all variables. The present work systematically addresses the boundary conditions at solid walls for turbulent bubbly flows. The complete coupled problem involving six variables is decoupled into three separate tasks, which consider void fraction profile, turbulent quantities, and gas velocity near the wall. Based on available experimental data it is shown that the reduction in void fraction near the wall is a consequence of the bubble shape, and not the wall lubrication effect repelling bubbles from the wall. Aiming at restoring the correct profile, a new wall force is derived from consideration of the interfacial forces balance near the wall. Its performance is evaluated through simulations of bubbly pipe flow experiments, confirming its improvements when compared to previous models. Three phenomena, namely, bubble-induced turbulence, buoyancy of gas, and displacement of liquid by gas, are speculated to have effect on the near-wall turbulent boundary layer. These effects are incorporated in the Analytical Wall Functions (AWF), which provide quantitative treatment of these bubble effects in the boundary layer. The boundary layer model is validated on the existing experimental data, and the AWF are assessed based on simulations of bubbly pipe flow experiments, as well as at the prototypical reactor conditions. It is demonstrated that most of the effects that arise due to bubbles in the boundary layer can be neglected, and consequently, single phase wall functions can be used in numerical simulations. Finally, through analysis of experimental data, it is suggested that the relative velocity between bubbles and the surrounding liquid does not remain constant throughout the domain in the Eulerian-Eulerian representation of the flow, but instead increases near the wall. A corresponding correction to the drag coefficient is proposed and validated against the experimental data.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Results from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of multiphase bubbly flows in vertical and horizontal channels were compared to averaged models of multiphase flows (two-fluid model etc.). The data from the direct numerical simulation were also used to calibrate and improve the averaged models. Steady state laminar flow in a vertical channel was analyzed first. Results from direct numerical simulations are compared with prediction of the steady-state two-fluid model of Antal, Lahey, and Flaherty (1991). The simulations are done assuming a two-dimensional system and the model coefficients are adjusted slightly to match the data for upflow. The model is then tested by comparisons with different values of flow rate and gravity, as well as down flow. Results agree reasonably in the middle of the channel. However, for upflow, model performs poorly near the no-slip wall. To better understand the flow with rising bubbles hugging the no-slip wall, detailed direct numerical simulations of the problem were performed in three dimensions. Deformability of the bubbles was found to play a significant role in the flow structure and averaged flow rate. Finally, the transient buoyancy driven motion of two-dimensional bubbles across a domain bounded by two horizontal walls is studied by. The bubbles are initially released next to the lower wall and as they rise, they disperse. Eventually all the bubbles collect at the top wall. The goal of the study is to examine how a simple one-dimensional model for the averaged void fraction captures the unsteady bubble motion. By using void fraction dependent velocities, where the exact dependency is obtained from simulations of homogeneous bubbly flows, the overall dispersion of the bubbles is predicted. Significant differences remain, however. Results suggest that bubble dispersion by the bubble induced liquid velocity must be included, and by using a simple model for the bubble dispersion improved agreement is found.

As introduction, some basics of the single phase boundary layer theory including some important scales and flow oscillation characteristics in pipes and rod bundles are presented. Then the scales characterizing the dispersed flow systems are presented. The description of the turbulence is provided at different level of complexity: simple algebraic models for eddy viscosity, simple algebraic models based on the Boussinesq hypothesis, modification of the boundary layer share due to modification of the bulk turbulence, modification of the boundary layer share due to nucleate boiling. The role of the following forces on the mathematical description of turbulent flows is discussed: the lift force, the lubrication force in the wall boundary layer, and the dispersion force. A pragmatic generalization of the k-eps models for continuous velocity field is proposed containing flows in large volumes and flows in porous structures. A Methods of how to derive source and sinks terms for multiphase k-eps models is presented. A set of 13 single- and two phase benchmarks for verification of k-eps models in system computer codes are provided and reproduced with the IVA computer code as an example of the application of the theory. This methodology is intended to help other engineers and scientists to introduce this technology step-by-step in their own engineering practice.
