Book excerpt: Bill Stein and his wife Mary had just recently moved back to Germany on Bill's parent's farm due to their passing. Little did Bill and his wife know that the lake on his parent's farm contained a small army of Nazi soldier's that met their fate during World War II on the farm, and that their final resting place was at the bottom of the lake Bill's father never told his son about the dead Nazi soldiers in his lake because he didn't want him to have nightmares, but days after moving into his parent's farm Bill noticed a green foam on the surface of the lake, and decided to call the water department to see if it was something out of the ordinary. The water department said it was probably because of an overabundance of algae and not to be concerned. As the days wore on, and the green foam was covering most of the lake Bill decided to call one of his good friends who was a scientist to have him come out, and get to the bottom of this green substance because the water department wasn't too concerned about Bill's problem. The next day Bill's friend Steve Kliner the scientist brought his testing equipment to test the lake water. Bill said, "Steve how long do you think it will take to find out what the cause of this green substance is?" Steve answered, "I should know something this evening when I run all the tests?" "Sounds Great," replied Bill. Bill had no idea the chemicals that Steve was about to pour into the lake would unleash something evil that had been lying dormant for fifty years at the bottom of the lake.

Book excerpt: A dizzying trip through the mind(s) of the provocative and influential thinker Nick Land. During the 1990s British philosopher Nick Land's unique work, variously described as “rabid nihilism,” “mad black deleuzianism,” and “cybergothic,” developed perhaps the only rigorous and culturally-engaged escape route out of the malaise of “continental philosophy” —a route that was implacably blocked by the academy. However, Land's work has continued to exert an influence, both through the British “speculative realist” philosophers who studied with him, and through the many cultural producers—writers, artists, musicians, filmmakers—who have been invigorated by his uncompromising and abrasive philosophical vision. Beginning with Land's early radical rereadings of Heidegger, Nietzsche, Kant and Bataille, the volume collects together the papers, talks and articles of the mid-90s—long the subject of rumour and vague legend (including some work which has never previously appeared in print)—in which Land developed his futuristic theory-fiction of cybercapitalism gone amok; and ends with his enigmatic later writings in which Ballardian fictions, poetics, cryptography, anthropology, grammatology and the occult are smeared into unrecognisable hybrids. Fanged Noumena gives a dizzying perspective on the entire trajectory of this provocative and influential thinker's work, and has introduced his unique voice to a new generation of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adding some 20 percent to the original content, this is a completely updated edition of Steven Weisenburger's indispensable guide to Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow. Weisenburger takes the reader page by page, often line by line, through the welter of historical references, scientific data, cultural fragments, anthropological research, jokes, and puns around which Pynchon wove his story. Weisenburger fully annotates Pynchon's use of languages ranging from Russian and Hebrew to such subdialects of English as 1940s street talk, drug lingo, and military slang as well as the more obscure terminology of black magic, Rosicrucianism, and Pavlovian psychology. The Companion also reveals the underlying organization of Gravity's Rainbow--how the book's myriad references form patterns of meaning and structure that have eluded both admirers and critics of the novel. The Companion is keyed to the pages of the principal American editions of Gravity's Rainbow: Viking/Penguin (1973), Bantam (1974), and the special, repaginated Penguin paperback (2000) honoring the novel as one of twenty "Great Books of the Twentieth Century."

Book excerpt: Timothy Leary, the visionary Harvard psychologist who became a guru of the 1960s counterculture, reentered as an icon of new edge cyberpunks. HIGH PRIEST chronicles 16 psychedelic trips taken in the days before LSD was made illegal. The trip guides or "High Priests" include Aldous Huxley, Gordon Wasson, William S. Burroughs, Godsdog, Allen Ginsberg, Ram Dass, Ralph Metzner, Willy (a junkie from New York City), Huston Smith, Frank Barron, and others. The scene was Millbrook, a mansion in Upstate New York, that was the Mecca of Psychedellia during the 1960s, and of the many luminaries of the period who made a pilgrimage there to trip with Leary and his group, The League for Spiritual Discovery. Each chapter includes an I-Ching reading, a chronicle of what happened during the trip, marginalia of comments, quotations, and illustrations. A fascinating window into an era. This edition includes a Foreword by Allen Ginsberg, an introduction by Timothy Leary about the intergenerational counterculture, and illustrations by Howard Hallis.
