Download or read book The Indian Ocean written by Michael N. Pearson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stimulating and authoritative overview, Michael Pearson reverses the traditional angle of maritime history and looks from the sea to its shores - its impact on the land through trade, naval power, travel and scientific exploration. This vast ocean, both connecting and separating nations, has shaped many countries' cultures and ideologies through the movement of goods, people, ideas and religions across the sea. The Indian Ocean moves from a discussion of physical elements, its shape, winds, currents and boundaries, to a history from pre-Islamic times to the modern period of European dominance. Going far beyond pure maritime history, this compelling survey is an invaluable addition to political, cultural and economic world history.

Book Synopsis The Prehistoric Maritime Frontier of Southeast China by : Chunming Wu
Download or read book The Prehistoric Maritime Frontier of Southeast China written by Chunming Wu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents multidisciplinary research on the cultural history, ethnic connectivity, and oceanic transportation of the ancient Indigenous Bai Yue (百越) in the prehistoric maritime region of southeast China and southeast Asia. In this maritime Frontier of China, historical documents demonstrate the development of the “barbarian” Bai Yue and Island Yi (岛夷) and their cultural interaction with the northern Huaxia (华夏) in early Chinese civilization within the geopolitical order of the “Central State-Four Peripheries Barbarians-Four Seas”. Archaeological typologies of the prehistoric remains reveal a unique cultural tradition dominantly originating from the local Paleolithic age and continuing to early Neolithization across this border region. Further analysis of material culture from the Neolithic to the Early Iron Age proves the stability and resilience of the indigenous cultures even with the migratory expansion of Huaxia and Han (汉) from north to south. Ethnographical investigations of aboriginal heritage highlight their native cultural context, seafaring technology and navigation techniques, and their interaction with Austronesian and other foreign maritime ethnicities. In a word, this manuscript presents a new perspective on the unique cultural landscape of indigenous ethnicities in southeast China with thousands of years’ stable tradition, a remarkable maritime orientation and overseas cultural hybridization in the coastal region of southeast China.

From the Atlantic the Pacific Ocean is entered either by the West after doubling Cape Horn, or by the East on doubling the Cape of Good Hope. In this latter case the Indian Ocean must be crossed to reach the Pacific, and one of the numerous straits adopted which connect the two seas; or the course South of Australia. In continuation of the subject of the routes for crossing the Atlantic as well as the Indian Ocean, those for the Pacific by the East or West are here explained according as the ship is bound to the eastern coasts of Asia, Australia, or a port in the western Pacific, or whether that may be in its eastern part on the coast of America. These remarks will be followed by those on the principal routes for crossing the Pacific Ocean, and from which others may be easily deduced. It will be convenient to divide the subject into, --1st.--Routes from the American ports to China and Australia and back; also routes from India or China to the East coast of Australia and back. 2nd.--Routes from India and China to Australia by Torres Strait, . with instructions for its navigation, and the eastern coast of Australia and back by Torres or Pitt Straits. 3rd.--The navigation of the western coast of America. First Part. From the West Coast of America to Manila or Macao.--There are two great routes from the western coast of America to Manila or Macao, or any other point of the southern coast of Asia, that may be taken according to circumstances or the object of the voyage: they are called the great Southern and Northern Routes. Great Southern. Route.--The great southern route is taken only by ships from the southern ports of America. These also often prefer the northern route. Vessels from Chiloe, Lima, or.
Book Synopsis Southeast Asia and the Rise of Chinese and Indian Naval Power by : Sam Bateman
Download or read book Southeast Asia and the Rise of Chinese and Indian Naval Power written by Sam Bateman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emerging maritime security scene in Southeast Asia. It considers highly topical implications for the region of possible strategic competition between China and India - the rising naval powers of Asia - with a possible naval "arms race" emerging between these countries both with naval force development and operations. As part of its "Look East" policy, India has deployed naval units to the Pacific Ocean for port visits and exercises both with East Asian navies and the US Navy, but India is also concerned about the possibility of the Chinese Navy operating in the Indian Ocean. Even as the US-India defence relationship continues to deepen, the US and China are struggling to build a closer links. China’s and India’s strategic interests overlap in this region both in maritime strategic competition or conflict – which might be played out in the Bay of Bengal, the Malacca and Singapore Straits and the South China Sea. The sea lines of communication (SLOCs) through Southeast Asian waters constitute vital "choke points" between the Indian and Pacific Oceans carrying essential energy supplies for China and other Northeast Asian countries. Any strategic competition between China and India has implications for other major maritime players in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, especially Australia, the Republic of Korea and Japan, as well as the US. This book identifies possible cooperative and confidence-building measures that may contribute to enhanced relations between these two major powers and dampen down the risks associated with their strategic competition.
Book Synopsis The Worlds of the Indian Ocean by : Philippe Beaujard
Download or read book The Worlds of the Indian Ocean written by Philippe Beaujard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe's place in history is re-assessed in this first comprehensive history of the ancient world, centering on the Indian Ocean and its role in pre-modern globalization. Philippe Beaujard presents an ambitious and comprehensive global history of the Indian Ocean world, from the earliest state formations to 1500 CE. Supported by a wealth of empirical data, full color maps, plates, and figures, he shows how Asia and Africa dominated the economic and cultural landscape and the flow of ideas in the pre-modern world. This led to a trans-regional division of labor and an Afro-Eurasian world economy. Beaujard questions the origins of capitalism and hints at how this world-system may evolve in the future. The result is a reorienting of world history, taking the Indian Ocean, rather than Europe, as the point of departure. Volume I provides in-depth coverage of the period from the fourth millennium BCE to the sixth century CE.
