Book excerpt: If the part played by the Royal Navy in the Boer War has been overlooked among all the land based operations then this book will help to put matters right; the naval guns, brought ashore on improvised carriages, enabled the army to cope on equal terms with the Boer artillery and Royal Marines supplemented army units. A brigade of 17 officers and 267 men was at Ladysmith with guns to match those of the Boers; 33 died, of these one officer and five men were battle casualties , 27 (two of them officers) died from disease. And naval gun detachments outside the town played a big part in the relief. Another brigade, in Cape Colony, joined Lord Methuen s Kimberley relief force and took part in the battle of Belmont on 23 November 1899. Two days later a brigade which included 200 marines were in action at Graspan (also known as the battle of Enslin), a strong Boer position, and in the operations leading to its capture the marines lost 3 officers and 86 men of a total casualty list of 9 officers and 185 men. This is a comprehensive account of operations involving naval and marine units and appendices include casualty details, names of officers and details of honours and awards, including mention in despatches.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Brigades in the South African War, 1899-1900 Despite the fact that so much has already been written on the subject, I feel assured that this little contribution to the history Of the struggle in South Africa needs neither explanation nor excuse. It is the story Of how, at a time when their comrades of the land service were in dire need of help, the seamen hastened to place their ships' guns on improvised carriages, took them ash ore, and in the nick of tims enabled our military forces to cope on equal terms with the Boer artillery. Book Synopsis Lord Methuen and the British Army by : Stephen M. Miller
Download or read book Lord Methuen and the British Army written by Stephen M. Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the readiness of the British military establishment for war in 1899 and its performance in the South African War (1899-1902). It focuses on the career of Field Marshal Paul Sanford, 3rd Baron Methuen, whose traditional military training, used so effectively in Queen Victoria's small wars, was put to the test by the modern challenges of the South African War. A subsidiary aim of this work is to correct and refine the historical consensus that Methuen's campaing in the South African War was plagued by practical errors and poor judgement. The South African War was a crucial transitional episode in the history of the British army. Unlike Great Britain's other expeditions, it required the concentrated resources of the entire empire. It was a modern war in the sense that it employed the technology, the weaponry, the communications, and the transportation of the second industrial revolution.
