A no-nonsense counselor says he can graduate if he writes a 100-page paper. So Steve starts writing, and as the paper becomes more and more personal, he reveals how a National Merit Scholar has become an under-achieving stoner. And in telling how he got to where he is, Steve discovers how to get to where he wants to be.
Download or read book Magnus Merriman written by Eric Linklater and published by Canongate Books. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced by Douglas Gifford. This hilarious novel charts the rise and fall (and perhaps the rise again) of Magnus Merriman—would-be lover, writer, politician, idealist and crofter—moved by dreams of greatness and a talent for farcical defeat. Convinced that ‘small nations are safer to live in than big ones’, Magnus becomes a Nationalist candidate for the parliamentary seat of ‘Kinluce’. With details based on Linklater’s own experiences in an East Fife by-election in 1933, the way is set for a satirical and irreverent portrait of Scottish life, literature and politics in the 1930s. Nothing is sacred and no-one is spared. ‘A book full of remarkable passages . . . [with a] breathless tempo . . . it is wonderful writing.’ Herald
Download or read book Olly's Zoo written by Mat Gardener and published by Martin J. Hibbs. This book was released on with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This particular story is about Olly’s local zoo and the adventures he has with some of the creatures who live there. After Olly’s father sees an article about the zoo in the local paper and how they might have to close down, he decides to take the family there for a day out. Whilst they are there, the family each decide to sponsor one of the creatures to help support the zoo and keep it open. This prompts a whole series of dreams where Olly imagines himself taking the animals the family have sponsored, out on various adventures. The story ends with Olly going to see where zoo animals come from and he learns what an important job they do in protecting endamgered species. This story aims to show young readers how important it is to support zoos which offer sanctuary to the worlds’ most endangered animal species. Whilst in an ideal world animals are best left in their natural habitat, this story aims to show that this is not always in their best interests to live in the wild. In cases where species are hunted down and killed for medicine, and where unrestrained habitat destruction occurs, zoo parks have an important role to play. Not only do zoo parks offer sanctuary for such animals, they also raise important publicity in respect to their plight in their natural habitats, which can be used to put pressure on politicians and world leaders to offer protection to such creatures and their habitats. They also offer important breeding opportunities so that colonies of the animals can be re-established in their original habitat, once conditions allow. In the latter part of the story, habitat destruction is illustrated very clearly in order to make young readers’/listeners conscious of how rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate.

When Brin is tasked with dressing his new friend Lane Moredock for a date with Brin's ex, Derek, he's excited--fashion is what he knows best, and Lane is going to look stunning. But what should be a fun afternoon takes a serious turn when Brin sees that Lane has been injured, and Lane's reluctance to tell Brin the truth about it makes Brin start to question who he is, why things didn't work with Derek, and what people really think of him. Is he just a flittery, glittery fashion fairy? Or does he mean something more to the people he loves? And can he find a way to bring these doubts up with Ferg--or is Ferg going to have to Top his way to the bottom of this? The Boy Who Belonged Twenty-one-year-old Lane Moredock finally has a normal life. Six months after he was wrongly made a suspect in his parents' Ponzi scheme, he's settled down with his older boyfriend, Derek, and is working and attending school. But his happiness is threatened when his mother launches a Christmastime PR campaign to help appeal her prison sentence and asks introverted Lane to be part of it. Derek Fields has his hands full taking Santa photos, bird-sitting his sister's foul-mouthed macaw, and helping Lane prepare for a television interview neither of them wants him to do. As he eases Lane through his anxiety, he worries that Lane sees him as a caretaker rather than a boyfriend, and that their age difference really does matter. He and Lane compensate for the stress in their lives by taking their D/s relationship to new levels. As Christmas draws nearer, the pressure builds. Pushy elves. Snarky subs. A bad fight. A parrot in peril. How the hell is Derek going to give Lane a perfect Christmas when the Moredock legacy threatens to pull them apart?

Book excerpt: Imagine what it would be like to have a Macaw as a pet! That's what happened to the children in our story, Kinsey and Jake. Their family name was Carter and they lived with their Mum Fenella, who was a nurse at the local hospital and their Dad, Tom. Tom wasn't there very often as he was in the Merchant Navy so he was often away on his ship visiting different countries with his work. Their 'Aunty Venezuela' lived nearby. She was really their Gran and Fenella's Mum but they loved saying 'Aunty Venezuela', which is where she originally came from, so the name stuck. She saw them most days and often picked them up from school when Mum was at work. Their Dad had bought them a pet Macaw to keep them all company while he was away. What a naughty Macaw he was! Fenella was always threatening to send him to the zoo. You will be able to read about all the mischievous things Mr Macaw got up to. There are some songs for you to play to go along with the story and if you can play a recorder or keyboard, the tunes are simple for you to play.
