Book Synopsis Intercultural Education by : Jagdish Gundara
Download or read book Intercultural Education written by Jagdish Gundara and published by Inst of Education. This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Inaugural Professorial Lecture When the Institute of Education's International Centre for Intercultural Studies (ICIS) was set up in 1979 there were major issues centring on the reduction of discrimination and inequality on its agenda. In this lecture Professor Gundara discusses ways in which issues of equity, knowledge, race and religion are being addressed today, the challenges they pose to the education system, and possible solutions to these challenges. Professor Gundara argues that there are a number of 'brinks' within the field of education, which he views from an intercultural perspective - these include issues of economic globalisation, educational inequity, knowledge centrism, racism and religious intolerance, the inadequacy of current teacher education, and the media. Globalisation, diversity and uniformity are considered in an international context, and the author reviews the problems arising from a lack of intercultural consensus about the use of terms or consistent frameworks for analysis. He argues that there is a positive future for interculturalism if concepts and analyses are developed which draw on the historical and contemporary aspects of diversity to build an inclusive education system.

Book Synopsis Reading and Writing Disorders in Different Orthographic Systems by : P. G. Aaron
Download or read book Reading and Writing Disorders in Different Orthographic Systems written by P. G. Aaron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-10-31 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though Specific Reading Disability (Dyslexia) has been clinically recognized as a developmental learning disorder for nearly a hundred years. only within the past two decades it has become the subject of major experimental investigation. Because. by definition. dyslexic children are of average or superior intelligence. it is often suspected that some arcane feature of the written language is responsible for the inordinate difficulty experienced by these children in learning to read. The occasional claim that developmental dyslexia is virtually nonexistent in some languages coupled with the fact that languages differ in their writing systems has further rendered orthography a subject of serious investigation. The present Volume represents a collection of preliminary reports of investigations that explored the relationship between orthography and reading disabilities in different languages. Even though not explicitly stated. these reports are concerned with the question whether or not some orthographies are easier to learn to read and write than others. One dimension on which orthographies differ from each other is the kind of relationship they bear to pronunciation. The orthographies examined in this book range from the ones that have a simple one-to one grapheme-phoneme relationship to those which have a more complex relationship.

Book excerpt: Winner of the PEN Translation Prize A “sweeping . . . irreverent” masterpiece of postwar Polish literature that “chronicles the modernization of Poland and celebrates the persistence of desire” (The New Yorker) Hailed as one of the best ever books in translation, Stone Upon Stone is Wieslaw Mysliwski’s grand epic in the rural tradition—a profound and irreverent stream of memory cutting through the rich and varied terrain of one man’s connection to the land, to his family and community, to women, to tradition, to God, to death, and to what it means to be alive. Wise and impetuous, plainspoken and compassionate, Szymek recalls his youth in their village, his time as a guerrilla soldier, as a wedding official, barber, policeman, lover, drinker, and caretaker for his invalid brother. Filled with interwoven stories and voices, by turns hilarious and moving, Szymek’s narrative exudes the profound wisdom of one who has suffered, yet who loves life to the very core.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Dynamics of Multilingualism by : Anne-Claude Berthoud
Download or read book Exploring the Dynamics of Multilingualism written by Anne-Claude Berthoud and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the meanings and implications of multilingualism and its uses in a context of rapid changes, in Europe and around the world. All types of organisations, including the political institutions of the European Union, universities and private-sector companies must rise to the many challenges posed by operating in a multilingual environment. This requires them, in particular, to make the best use of speakers’ very diverse linguistic repertoires. The contributions in this volume, which stem from the DYLAN research project financed by the European Commission as part of its Sixth Framework Programme, examine at close range how these repertoires develop, how they change and how actors adapt skilfully the use of their repertoires to different objectives and conditions. These different strategies are also examined in terms of their capacity to ensure efficient and fair communication in a multilingual Europe. Careful observation of actors’ multilingual practices reveals finely tuned communicational strategies drawing on a wide range of different languages, including national languages, minority languages and lingue franche. Understanding these practices, their meaning and their implications, helps to show in what way and under what conditions they are not merely a response to a problem, but an asset for political institutions, universities and business.
