Book excerpt: Contemporaries of Immanuel Kant understood his 'Critique of Pure Reason' and 'Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics' as ultimately solving some of the questions perpetually raised by theists: Is there a God? Can we even answer such a question? Kant's system, and his conclusion, seemed the death knell of respectable philosophizing about divine matters. It is obvious to contemporary philosophers, however, that our fascination with such questions remains undiminished. It may be that Kant's own system is as much in dispute as the matters he intended to put to rest. It may be that, like Aristotle himself, we remain convinced that Mind lies behind the natural order of things. In any case, philosophers continue to debate those questions raised by the ancient philosophers who turned their minds heavenward to ask about the first of all causes. In 'Natural Theology: Collected Readings', Jean Rioux has provided a good selection of philosophical texts dealing with the existence and nature of God. They range from a consideration of distinctions from Aristotle's logical works to some of the classical arguments found in the writings of Anselm, Aquinas, Descartes, Locke, and Paley. Also included are some of the more important passages from the agnostic philosophers: Kant, Hume, Feuerbach, and Russell. While not intended as a stand-alone text in the philosophy of God, 'Natural Theology: Collected Readings' does supply a number of original texts that collectively form the backbone of traditional considerations of the divine from a philosophical perspective.

Book excerpt: More than two hundred years ago, Dr. William Paley wrote a series of books that marshaled evidence for the Christian faith. His books were often required reading at major institutions of learning. Believers and unbelievers alike wrestled with Paley's arguments and his compelling presentation of them. Paley's Natural Theology was one of those books. In it, he showed from biology and human anatomy that the argument for design was a clear and self-evident inference from the facts, and from that point of departure proposed that only a designer God could adequately account for those facts. His famous analogy from an intricate watch to the required deduction that there exists a watchmaker persists to this day. When evolutionary theory rose to dominance, it was thought that Paley's views on 'intelligent design' had been fully put to rest. However, each new generation discovers anew that evolutionary theory requires them to accept as true what appears, on its face, to be patently absurd: that immense complexity, surpassing in its apparent genius what 1,000 human geniuses cannot create was nonetheless the product of unguided, intrinsically dumb, natural forces. Unsatisfied, they consider the alternatives. The argument is sure to rage for another two hundred years and Dr. Paley's Natural Theology will prove to be relevant then as it is relevant today, advances in our understanding of biology notwithstanding, and, actually, because of those very same advances. Book excerpt: William Paley (1743-1805) argues for the existence of God as the intelligent creator of the world in this, his last book, published in 1802. He builds on early modern natural theology including the works of John Ray, William Derham, and Bernard Nieuwentyt, and most of his examples are taken from medicine and natural history. Paley uses analogy and metaphors, including a particularly well-written version of the 'watchmaker analogy', to prove that the world is designed and sustained by God. This sixth edition also contains a detailed bibliography, appendices on Paley's courses, and background notes on key figures. It was an influential best-seller throughout the nineteenth century, read by theologians and scientists alike, and reprinted in cheap editions for the middle classes. It inspired many nineteenth-century works on natural theology, including the Bridgewater Treatises (which also appear in this series), and is a landmark of Western thought.
