Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed work is to develop an innovative exploration and production strategy which will optimize the efficient exploitation of gas resources, particularly in those "tight" gas sands in the Mesaverde Group in the Green River Basin, Wyoming. The development of this strategy will be based on establishing a thorough understanding of the processes affecting the sources and reservoirs of this natural gas resource within the Greater Green River Basin, e.g., the burial and subsequent uplift of the Mesaverde Group. By understanding these processes it will be possible to establish the critical components which determine the accumulation of natural gas in Mesaverde fields and its successful and efficient exploitation.

Book excerpt: Recent estimates of the natural gas resources of Cretaceous low-permeability reservoirs of the Greater Green River basin indicate that as much as 5000 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas may be in place (Law and others 1989). Of this total, Law and others (1989) attributed approximately 80 percent to the Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde Group and Lewis Shale. Unfortunately, present economic conditions render the drilling of many vertical wells unprofitable. Consequently, a three-well demonstration program, jointly sponsored by the US DOE/METC and the Gas Research Institute, was designed to test the profitability of this resource using state-of-the-art directional drilling and completion techniques. DOE/METC studied the geologic and engineering characteristics of ''tight'' gas reservoirs in the eastern portion of the Greater Green River basin in order to identify specific locations that displayed the greatest potential for a successful field demonstration. This area encompasses the Rocks Springs Uplift, Wamsutter Arch, and the Washakie and Red Desert (or Great Divide) basins of southwestern Wyoming. The work was divided into three phases. Phase 1 consisted of a regional geologic reconnaissance of 14 gas-producing areas encompassing 98 separate gas fields. In Phase 2, the top four areas were analyzed in greater detail, and the area containing the most favorable conditions was selected for the identification of specific test sites. In Phase 3, target horizons were selected for each project area, and specific placement locations were selected and prioritized.

Book Synopsis Assessing Natural Gas and Oil Resources. An Example of a New Approach in the Greater Green River Basin by :
Download or read book Assessing Natural Gas and Oil Resources. An Example of a New Approach in the Greater Green River Basin written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a new approach to assessing natural gas and crude oil resources and the results of applying that approach to the Greater Green River Basin in south- western Wyoming. The methodology builds upon existing assessments of technically recoverable resources by evaluating economic and environmental considerations and including these into the assessment as additional resource attributes. The primary objectives of this effort are to inform government officials and other stakeholders involved in land use planning, development of energy policies, and energy development and utilization planning. The approach aims to guide strategic (i.e., large-scale and long-term) planning, and is not intended to replace existing project-specific economic or land use planning processes.
