Book Synopsis Generating Referring Expressions by : Robert Dale
Download or read book Generating Referring Expressions written by Robert Dale and published by Bradford Book. This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Dale presents a detailed description of the development of algorithms for the generation of referring expressions, and of the underlying structures that motivate these algorithms, in a dynamic domain. He provides a number of novel results in both knowledge representation and natural language generation that should have straightforward applications in other domains. Dale describes EPICURE, a natural language generating system, and its capacity to create referring expressions in a domain embodying several interesting features: The entities in the domain consist of masses and sets as well as the more usual singular individuals; during the development of a discourse, the entities may take on new properties, existing entities may be destroyed, and new entities may be created; and the discourses within which the entities appear are hierarchically structured, allowing for the integration of discourse-structural constraints on the use of anaphoric expressions. EPICURE is designed to generate text from underlying plans. Dale uses cooking recipes as examples, showing how the system must determine what level of explanation is required and how the events in the plan must be modeled to ensure that the references generated are accurate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Expressions "A Family Affair" truly reflect "Gods" favor on me. "Gods" hand is a hand of power and "He" has continued to keep me in "His" hands as I go forth in "His" name with Natural Expressions. Since Natural Expressions "Up Close and Personal", many changes in my life have come but, through Christ Jesus and His Angels "Grace and Mercy", I've been able to endure the challenges. As the elders would say "what don't kill us only makes us stronger" and boy ain't that the truth. "A Family Affair" is dedicated in memory of my husband Rudolph who passed away in September 2010. The memory of him enjoying my poetry will always be an inspiration. My favorite book of romance is the Bible's Old Testaments "Song of Solomon". God's love is powerful. "Look at God". Another collection, another blessing. Oh, I look to the hills and I defi nitely recognize where and whom my help comes from. Since Natural Expressions "Up Close and Personal" I've relocated to the hometown of my family in Warrenton, North Carolina, a drastic change from Washington, DC but, I welcome the change and the folks are wonderful. "A Family Affair" was inspired by everyday living, family, friends, church and romance. A chance fi nally to share my children's (April and Vernon) school days poetry. How surprised I was to fi nd a suitcase tucked away that contained much of my children's school work, pictures, and report cards and yes, poetry written by them. What an honor to share their expressions. As always, "To God be the glory". I pray that you have found one if not many poems in this collection to uplift and encourage you along your journey. If so, than our writings are not in vain. Peace and Blessings, Andrea J. Parham-Shannon

Book Synopsis The Social Nature of Emotion Expression by : Ursula Hess
Download or read book The Social Nature of Emotion Expression written by Ursula Hess and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of theoretical thinking about the communicative scope of emotional expressions as well as an overview of the state of the art research in emotional psychology. For many years, research in emotional psychology has been primarily concerned with the labeling of emotion expressions and the link between emotion expressions and the expresser’s internal state. Following recent trends in research devoting specific attention to the social signal value of emotions, contributors emphasize the nature of emotion expressions as information about the person and the situation, including the social norms and standards relevant to the situation. Focusing on the role of emotion expressions as communicative acts, this timely book seeks to advance a line of theoretical thinking that goes beyond the view of emotion expressions as symptoms of an intrapersonal phenomenon to focus on their interpersonal function. The Social Nature of Emotion Expression will be of interest to researchers in emotional psychology, as well as specialists in nonverbal behavior, communication, linguistics, ethology and ethnography.
Download or read book Speaking My Mind written by Dorit Bar-On and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2004-11-18 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dorit Bar-On develops and defends a novel view of avowals and self-knowledge. Drawing on resources from the philosophy of language, the theory of action, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind, she offers original and systematic answers to many long-standing questions concerning our ability to know our own minds. We are all very good at telling what states of mind we are in at a given moment. When it comes to our own present states of mind, what we say goes; an avowal such as "I'm feeling so anxious" or "I'm thinking about my next trip to Paris," it is typically supposed, tells it like it is. But why is that? Why should what I say about my present mental states carry so much more weight than what others say about them? Why should avowals be more immune to criticism and correction than other claims we make? And if avowals are not based on any evidence or observation, how could they possibly express our knowledge of our own present mental states? Bar-On proposes a Neo-Expressivist view according to which an avowal is an act through which a person directly expresses, rather than merely reports, the very mental condition that the avowal ascribes. She argues that this expressivist idea, coupled with an adequate characterization of expression and a proper separation of the semantics of avowals from their pragmatics and epistemology, explains the special status we assign to avowals. As against many expressivists and their critics, she maintains that such an expressivist explanation is consistent with a non-deflationary view of self-knowledge and a robust realism about mental states. The view that emerges preserves many insights of the most prominent contributors to the subject, while offering a new perspective on our special relationship to our own minds.

Book Synopsis Expression and Self-Knowledge by : Dorit Bar-On
Download or read book Expression and Self-Knowledge written by Dorit Bar-On and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a timely and original contribution to the debate surrounding privileged self-knowledge Contemporary epistemologists and philosophers of mind continue to find puzzling the nature and source of privileged self-knowledge: the ordinary and effortless ‘first-person’ knowledge we have of our own sensations, moods, emotions, beliefs, desires, and hopes. In Expression and Self-Knowledge, Dorit Bar-On and Crispin Wright articulate their joint dissatisfaction with extant accounts of self-knowledge and engage in a sustained and substantial critical debate over the merits of an expressivist approach to the topic. The authors incorporate cutting-edge research while defending their own alternatives to existing approaches to so-called ‘first-person privilege’. Bar-On defends her neo-expressivist account, addressing the objection that neo-expressivism fails to provide an adequate epistemology of ordinary self-knowledge, and addresses new objections levelled by Wright. Wright then presents an alternative pluralist approach, and Bar-On argues in response that pluralism faces difficulties neo-expressivism avoids. Providing invaluable insights on a hotly debated topic in epistemology and philosophy of mind, Expression and Self-Knowledge: Presents an in-depth debate between two leading philosophers over the expressivist approach Offers novel developments and penetrating criticisms of the authors' respective views Features two different perspectives on the influential remarks on expression and self-knowledge found in Wittgenstein’s later writings Includes four jointly written chapters that offer a critical overview of prominent existing accounts, which provide a useful advanced introduction to the subject. Expression and Self-Knowledge is essential reading for epistemologists, philosophers of mind and language, psychologists with an interest in self-knowledge, and researchers and graduate students working in expression, expressivism, and self-knowledge.
Book Synopsis Harmonic Experience by : W. A. Mathieu
Download or read book Harmonic Experience written by W. A. Mathieu and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of musical harmony from its ancient fundamentals to its most complex modern progressions, addressing how and why it resonates emotionally and spiritually in the individual. W. A. Mathieu, an accomplished author and recording artist, presents a way of learning music that reconnects modern-day musicians with the source from which music was originally generated. As the author states, "The rules of music--including counterpoint and harmony--were not formed in our brains but in the resonance chambers of our bodies." His theory of music reconciles the ancient harmonic system of just intonation with the modern system of twelve-tone temperament. Saying that the way we think music is far from the way we do music, Mathieu explains why certain combinations of sounds are experienced by the listener as harmonious. His prose often resembles the rhythms and cadences of music itself, and his many musical examples allow readers to discover their own musical responses.

Book Synopsis Principles of Cognition, Language and Action by : N. Praetorius
Download or read book Principles of Cognition, Language and Action written by N. Praetorius and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-03-31 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes serious flaws in the reductionist assumptions about Mind and Matter of Naturalism and Constructivism, which underlie research and theorizing on cognition, language and action within current academic psychology. The author argues for alternative, radically different assumptions about the relationship between the mental and material reality, which are not only tenable, but as a matter of principle must be taken for granted, and be the point of departure for all investigations into both reality and our cognition and description of it. The consequences of the arguments in this book are far-reaching. The assumptions and principles derived from them offer a consistent foundation for a science of psychology. They also open up new and straightforward ways of dealing with the key issues of truth and intentionality, subjectivity and objectivity, of relevance to philosophy, the humanities and social sciences.

Book Synopsis Psychology of the Image by : Michael Forrester
Download or read book Psychology of the Image written by Michael Forrester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology of the Image outlines a theoretical framework bringing together the semiotic concepts developed by Charles Peirce, the sociological insights of Ervin Goffman and the psychoanalytic ideas of Jacques Lacan. Image studies in fashion, advertising, photography, film studies and psychology have been influenced by these theorists in significant ways. The framework presented helps the reader understand how these ideas relate to the study of different domains of the image: the internal imagery of dreams, external images such as the photograph and image processes which span both contexts, e.g., images we have about ourselves. The topics discussed are organised into three themes. The first considers mental imagery, including sound and dreams. The second addresses the interdependent nature of internal and external images, e.g., the gendered self and social identity. In the third theme, attention turns to external images including television, film, photography, the computer and the internet. Psychology of the Image will be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates, lecturers and researchers in the fields of psychology, media studies and sociology.
Book Synopsis The Expression of Emotion by : Catharine Abell
Download or read book The Expression of Emotion written by Catharine Abell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Expression of Emotion collects cutting-edge essays on emotional expression written by leading philosophers, psychologists, and legal theorists. It highlights areas of interdisciplinary research interest, including facial expression, expressive action, and the role of both normativity and context in emotion perception. Whilst philosophical discussion of emotional expression has addressed the nature of expression and its relation to action theory, psychological work on the topic has focused on the specific mechanisms underpinning different facial expressions and their recognition. Further, work in both legal and political theory has had much to say about the normative role of emotional expressions, but would benefit from greater engagement with both psychological and philosophical research. In combining philosophical, psychological, and legal work on emotional expression, the present volume brings these distinct approaches into a productive conversation.

Book Synopsis Visual Cortex by : Stephane Molotchnikoff
Download or read book Visual Cortex written by Stephane Molotchnikoff and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neurosciences have experienced tremendous and wonderful progress in many areas, and the spectrum encompassing the neurosciences is expansive. Suffice it to mention a few classical fields: electrophysiology, genetics, physics, computer sciences, and more recently, social and marketing neurosciences. Of course, this large growth resulted in the production of many books. Perhaps the visual system and the visual cortex were in the vanguard because most animals do not produce their own light and offer thus the invaluable advantage of allowing investigators to conduct experiments in full control of the stimulus. In addition, the fascinating evolution of scientific techniques, the immense productivity of recent research, and the ensuing literature make it virtually impossible to publish in a single volume all worthwhile work accomplished throughout the scientific world. The days when a single individual, as Diderot, could undertake the production of an encyclopedia are gone forever. Indeed most approaches to studying the nervous system are valid and neuroscientists produce an almost astronomical number of interesting data accompanied by extremely worthy hypotheses which in turn generate new ventures in search of brain functions. Yet, it is fully justified to make an encore and to publish a book dedicated to visual cortex and beyond. Many reasons validate a book assembling chapters written by active researchers. Each has the opportunity to bind together data and explore original ideas whose fate will not fall into the hands of uncompromising reviewers of traditional journals. This book focuses on the cerebral cortex with a large emphasis on vision. Yet it offers the reader diverse approaches employed to investigate the brain, for instance, computer simulation, cellular responses, or rivalry between various targets and goal directed actions. This volume thus covers a large spectrum of research even though it is impossible to include all topics in the extremely diverse field of neurosciences.
