Book excerpt: This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis illustrates the large burden that bone disease places on our Nation and its citizens. Like other chronic diseases that disproportionately affect the elderly, the prevalence of bone disease and fractures is projected to increase markedly as the population ages. If these predictions come true, bone disease and fractures will have a tremendous negative impact on the future well-being of Americans. But as this report makes clear, they need not come true: by working together we can change the picture of aging in America. Osteoporosis, fractures, and other chronic diseases no longer should be thought of as an inevitable part of growing old. By focusing on prevention and lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, as well as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, Americans can avoid much of the damaging impact of bone disease and other chronic diseases. This Surgeon General's Report brings together for the first time the scientific evidence related to the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of bone disease. More importantly, it provides a framework for moving forward. The report will be another effective tool in educating Americans about how they can promote bone health throughout their lives. This first-ever Surgeon General's Report on bone health and osteoporosis provides much needed information on bone health, an often overlooked aspect of physical health. This report follows in the tradition of previous Surgeon Generals' reports by identifying the relevant scientific data, rigorously evaluating and summarizing the evidence, and determining conclusions.

Book excerpt: "Calcium helps build strong bones, buts it's a myth that taking a daily calcium supplement will enable you to avoid potentially debilitating bone loss. Building bone requires a full complement of minerals and vitamins that too often are lacking in a woman's--or man's--diet in the quantity and combination required to prevent and treat osteoporosis. In this book, Dr. Laura Kelly and Helen Bryman Kelly provide scientifically sound guidance on how to monitor your nutrient intake and cook right for bone health to avoid deficiencies of the key players in bone metabolism--including calcium, magnesium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin K2--and, in many cases, to avoid the use of osteoporosis drugs. Follow their instructions for creating your own personal nutrition plan and enjoy delicious bone-healthy meals from a selection of more than 100 recipes ranging from sauces and small plates to soups, salads, main dishes, and more,"--page [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: Natural Bone Health: A Practitioner's Guide examines the components of bone health - from submolecular to macromolecular - and offers a quantitative approach to epigenetic factors, providing simple, clinically-useful integrative tests and a targeted action plan including, diet, hydration, supplementation and lifestyle recommendations that will protect bone health as we age. The book describes an "Alkaline Way" approach to bone health, consisting of a three-pronged program: measuring and correcting net acid excess, measuring and reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and evaluating neurohormone status. By addressing, optimizing and balancing these three control factors, Dr Susan Brown and her team at the Center for Better Bones have achieved remarkable success stabilizing and rebuilding bone, time and time again for over more than three decades.Over the years, thought-leading scientist and integrative healthcare pioneer, Russell Jaffe, MD, PhD, CCN, and medical anthropologist and certified clinical nutritionist Susan Brown, PhD, CCN, have guided thousands of individuals to build and maintain lifelong bone strength, while at the same time maximizing overall health using this "Physiology First" principle of the Alkaline Way approach, which dictates that every action taken to strengthen bone should be of benefit to the entire fabric of human biology. They, along with co-contributors Jayashree Mani, MS, CCN and Marcy Jaffe, MPA, MBA, share the science behind and the details of their approach to overcome the challenges of the 21st century and improve bone and total body health.

Having seen scores of people lose their independence and their lives to osteoporosis-related fractures, Dr. Root has become a crusader against this silent killer. Book excerpt: A Medicine Through FoodTM Guide "This book has the answers that conventional medicine keeps missing. I highly recommend."—Christiane Northrup, MD, New York Times bestselling author Includes over 100 recipes, worksheets, and tools to help create a personal nutritional plan! Drugs that claim to prevent or redress bone loss can actually cause bones to crumble and break. Calcium supplements, fortified processed food, and pasteurized dairy don't work because the calcium in them doesn't reach our bones. It’s a grim picture, but The Healthy Bones Nutrition Plan and Cookbook can help. Coauthors Dr. Laura Kelly and Helen Bryman Kelly, daughter and mother, have a firm grasp on the disciplines concerned with bone health, including nutrient absorption and bone metabolism. They offer readers a natural, effective, and safe approach to conserving bone mass and building healthy bones by creating a personalized nutrition plan that includes eating the right foods in the right combinations. The authors’ quest for a natural, effective, safe way to prevent and treat bone loss began after 20 years of frustration, during which Helen tried supplements and several popular dietary approaches to arrest bone loss, only to see her bones continue to deteriorate year by year. Drawing on her knowledge of metabolic science and a rigorous examination of current research, Laura created a unique diet-based approach to bone health that allowed Helen’s body to absorb the nutrients that are naturally present in whole foods. Helen has been following her personal nutrition plan for four years and has stopped her bone loss completely—without taking any pharmaceuticals. Part One of the book begins with a primer on bone metabolism, including the roles of individual vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that can help build strong bones. Building on this knowledge and more, the authors provide a framework and worksheets so readers can use the recipes and work with their doctors to create their personal nutrition plan for skeletal health. The book includes more than 100 bone-health recipes ranging from sauces and small plates to soups, salads, and main dishes, drinks and desserts. The authors also explain how to make staple ingredients such as ghee and bone health vinegar and how to grow shiitake mushrooms—an important source of vitamin D. Readers can count on their personal nutrition plans and the Kellys’ recipes to provide food that helps calcium reach, and potentially strengthen, their bones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrition and Osteoporosis: Seeing Through a Glass, Darkly (1 Cor. 13:12) This volume of Advances in Nutritional Research deals with the present state of knowledge relative to the role of nutrition in the etiology of osteoporosis, one of the most serious degenerative diseases in the aging population. As a back drop for subsequent chapters on specific nutrients, Chapter 1 provides a com prehensive account of the gain and loss of bone throughout the life cycle, with emphasis on the architectural changes in later life that predispose to osteoporotic bone fractures. Chapter 2 documents the occurrence of aging bone loss through out human archeological history and Chapter 3 extends this documentation to all non-human vertebrate species so far examined, including primates living in the wild. It is apparent that a progressive loss of bone tissue is a normal accompaniment of aging among higher vertebrates. Whether it is a cause of bone fractures in animals, as it is in humans, is still unknown. It has also been established that there are significant differences in the frequency of osteoporotic fractures among human families, ethnic groups, national populations and diet cultures. Numerous studies have been carried out in an effort to explain these differences, and many of these deal with the possible effect of nutrition. Protracted controversies over the role of nutrition in the etiology of osteoporosis are reflected in the contents of several of the ensuing chapters.
