Download or read book Modern Japan written by J.E. Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J E Thomas examines the historical roots of Japanese social structures and preoccupations and he sets these within the broad chronological framework of Japan's political and military development. The book can thus serve as an introduction to modern Japan in a more general sense - but its focus throughout is on the people themselves. Professor Thomas gives due attention to the Japanese mainstream; but he also discusses those other sections of the community which have traditionally been underprivileged or marginalised - most obviously women, but also minority groups and outcasts - and the Japanese attitude to foreigners beyond her shores.
Book Synopsis Japan and Education by : M. Stephens
Download or read book Japan and Education written by M. Stephens and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-03-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese take education very seriously. They see economic success and social wellbeing as intimately tied-up with such provision. Perhaps no other country can equal the level of commitment of the Japanese to education. This book explores the development of such attitudes, the history of Japan's response to them, and the modern debates and initiatives as government and people wrestle with contemporary changes and prepare for a tomorrow which they see as making education even more central to a country's health. Those outside Japan who wish to understand its economic success will find much to give them thought within these pages.

Book Synopsis Women's Employment in Japan by : Kaye Broadbent
Download or read book Women's Employment in Japan written by Kaye Broadbent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low status accorded to part-time workers in Japan has resulted in huge inequalities in the workplace. This book examines the problem in-depth using case-study investigations in Japanese workplaces, and reveals the extent of the inequality. It shows how many part-time workers, most of whom are women, are concentrated in low paid, low skilled, poorly unionised service sector jobs. Part-time workers in Japan work hours equivalent to, or greater than, full-time workers, but receive lower financial and welfare benefits than their full-time colleagues. Overall, the book demonstrates that the way part-time work is constructed in Japan reinforces and institutionalises the sexual division of labour.
Book Synopsis The Mountain is Moving by : Patricia Morley
Download or read book The Mountain is Moving written by Patricia Morley and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Imperial times in Japan, women were subservient inferiors; in theory they were liberated by the democratic constitution imposed by the US after World War II; but, in real-life Japan, change is glacially slow. Here, that slow-changing reality is juxtaposed with the fast-moving aspirations of Japanese women. The author achieves this through wide-ranging interviews with Japanese women, and by using a range of contemporay Japanese literature.
Book Synopsis Active Pursuit of Pregnancy by : Isabel Fassbender
Download or read book Active Pursuit of Pregnancy written by Isabel Fassbender and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is ninkatsu? Who promotes and governs this "active pursuit of pregnancy?" Trying to answer these questions, this unprecedented publication exhibits how mass media, policymakers, and biomedical science-corporate capitalism govern the individual's reproductive choices in contemporary Japan through gendered discourses of self-improvement, life planning, and biomedical technology. Analyzing a broad range of media, popular science, and government material, it links historical and social processes with an original theoretical framework on self-governance, neoliberalism, and postfeminism. While deeply engaging with Japanese sources, this rich scholarship takes the study of reproductive politics beyond Japan. This book is not only of interest for Japanese studies scholars but more broadly also those curious about neoliberal government strategies, gender, and biomedical capitalism"--
Book Synopsis Globalizing Welfare by : Stein Kuhnle
Download or read book Globalizing Welfare written by Stein Kuhnle and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the welfare state’s origins in Europe, the idea of human welfare being organized through a civilized, institutionalized and uncorrupt state has caught the imagination of social activists and policy-makers around the world. This is particularly influential where rapid social development is taking place amidst growing social and gender inequality. This book reflects on the growing academic and political interest in global social policy and ‘globalizing welfare’, and pays particular attention to developments in Northern European and North-East Asian countries.
