Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on transit experience from various countries and markets, this book examines the economic environment of transit operations, the cost and production properties of transit service supply and the policies and prospects of transit regulatory reform. The principal objectives of the book are: first to conduct theoretical and empirical analyses of the major factors which jointly determine the economic structure and conditions of the transit sector; and second to explore and suggest policies which could resolve the sector's present crisis and make it economically viable. The first objective is explored in Part One where major structural demand factors and regulatory and subsidy conditions are identified and examined. Analytical and empirical measurement of technical production characteristics of transit services supply is carried out in Part Two. Part Three focuses on transit regulatory reform policy issues. The book is aimed primarily at an audience of transportation professionals, including economists and planners as well as public policy analysts. It requires, in general, a sound background in economics, mainly microeconomics. Thus graduate students in economics, geography, urban planning and public policy, and advanced undergraduates with good training in economics can best benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: Provided is an overview of the Nation's transportation system which identifies future investments required to maintain and develop its infrastructure. The contents of this study were used in support of the National Transportation Policy Statement, issued by the Department of Transportation during March 1990. It is organized around a framework in which transportation is viewed as an integral part of our socioeconomic system. The future development of transportation will be influenced by the same factors affecting the rest of the system, namely, demographic changes, the future course of the economy, the energy supply, and preservation of the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large deficits, increased military and social security expenditures, and the "New Federalism" have put the future of many domestic programs in doubt. How would further cuts in federal funding for these programs affect our society? Can such cuts significantly reduce the federal deficit? Can Administration attempts to transfer public functions form the federal government to the states succeed? In this volume, a group of prominent economists, many of whom have served in Republican or Democratic administrations, raise and answer questions fundamental to the design of domestic policy. They scrutinize the effects of recent policies on poverty, urban transportation systems, the supply of qualified teachers, the cost--and continuing racial segregation--of housing, and efforts to control pollution and improve the environment. tehy describe the likely results of further funding cuts in each area and propose imaginative alternatives for reducing the federal deficit. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and natural scientists often are called upon to produce, or participate, in the pro duction of forecasts. This volume assembles essays that (a) describe the organizational and political context of applied forecasting, (b) review the state-of-the-art for many fore casting models and methods, and (c) discuss issues of predictability, the implications of forecaSt errors, and model construction, linkage and verification. The essays should be of particular interest to social and natural scientists concerned with forecasting large-scale systems. This project had its origins in discussions of social forecasts and forecasting method ologies initiated a few years ago by several social and natural science members of the Social Science Research Council's Committee on Social Indicators. It became appar ent in these discussions that certain similar problems were confronted in forecasting large-scale systems-be they social or natural. In response, the Committee hypothesized that much could be learned through more extended and systematic interchanges among social and natural scientists focusing on the formal methodologies applied in forecasting. To put this conjecture to the test, the Committee sponsored a conference at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, on June 10-13, 1984, on forecasting in the social and natural sciences. The conference was co-chaired by Committee members Kenneth C. Land and Stephen H. Schneider representing, respectively, the social and natural science mem bership of the Committee. Support for the conference was provided by a grant to the Council from the Division of Social and Economic Science of the National Science Foundation.
