This report (1) assesses the evolving U.S. national strategy for Iraq and (2) evaluates whether the NSVI and its supporting documents address the desirable characteristics of an effective national strategy developed by GAO in previous work (see fig.). In this report, the NSVI and supporting documents are collectively referred to as the U.S. strategy for Iraq.
Book Synopsis Addressing the Components of Will in the National Strategy for Victory in Iraq by : David S. Hubner
Download or read book Addressing the Components of Will in the National Strategy for Victory in Iraq written by David S. Hubner and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A problem for the military strategic planner in the 21st century, as throughout history, is that physical defeat or even destruction of the enemies' military does not automatically equal surrender of a hostile population to the will of the victor. There has been much written about the political will and national will as targets in warfare yet within our doctrine the concept of will is not adequately addressed in terms of targeting and effects, perhaps leading military planners to pursue more traditional physical destruction of our enemies while our opponents seek a protracted campaign targeting components of our will. The purpose of this paper is to provide a study of the components of will, its relationship with the concept of a Center of Gravity (CoG) and an analysis of the National Strategy for Victory in Iraq to highlight the components of and targeting of will from both the friendly and enemy perspectives.

Book excerpt: In November 2005, the National Security Council (NSC) issued the National Strategy for Victory in Iraq (NSVI) to clarify the President's strategy for achieving U.S. political, security, and economic goals in Iraq. The U.S. goal is to establish a peaceful, stable, and secure Iraq. In addition, in June 2006, the administration issued a fact sheet at Camp David discussing current progress and goals in Iraq. This testimony (1) discusses the extent to which the NSVI and its supporting documents address the six characteristics of an effective national strategy, and (2) assesses how security, political, and economic factors will affect achieving the U.S. strategy for Iraq. In this testimony, the NSVI and supporting documents are collectively referred to as the U.S. strategy for Iraq.

Book Synopsis Iraq and the Evolution of American Strategy by : Steven Metz
Download or read book Iraq and the Evolution of American Strategy written by Steven Metz and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the U.S. military is more nimble, mobile, and focused on rapid responses against smaller powers than ever before. One could argue that the Gulf War and the postwar standoff with Saddam Hussein hastened needed military transformation and strategic reassessments in the post-Cold War era. But the preoccupation with Iraq also mired the United States in the Middle East and led to a bloody occupation. What will American strategy look like after U.S. troops leave Iraq? Iraq and the Evolution of American Strategy examines the ways in which the Gulf War, the WMD standoff, the Iraq War, and the ongoing occupation have driven broader changes in U.S. national security policy and military strategy. Steven Metz answers three overarching questions: 1. How did the conflict with Iraq drive and shape broader changes in national security and military strategy? 2. Did policymakers and military leaders interpret the conflict correctly and make the most effective responses? 3. What does this process tell us about the process of change in America's national security and military strategy and in the evolution of its strategic culture? Metz concludes that the United States has a long-standing, continuing problem "developing sound assumptions when the opponent operates within a different psychological and cultural framework." He sees a pattern of misjudgments about Saddam and Iraq based on Western cultural and historical bias and a pervasive faith in the superiority of America's worldview and institutions. This myopia contributed to America being caught off guard by Saddam's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, then underestimating his longevity, and finally miscalculating the likelihood of a stable and democratic Iraq after he was toppled. With lessons for all readers concerned about America's role in the world, Dr. Metz's important new work will especially appeal to scholars and students of strategy and international security studies, as well as to military professionals and DOD civilians. With a foreword by Colin S. Gray.

Download or read book Updating the National Strategy in Iraq written by Joint Forces Staff College and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-10-26 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the current United States Strategy in the ongoing Iraqi insurgency. Its thesis is that the current U.S. strategy does not adequately address the ideological element of this conflict. This book reviews and analyzes the Iraqi environment, the current trends in the insurgency, and the currently stated U.S. strategies to include the National Strategy for Combating Terrorism, and the National Strategy for Victory in Iraq. Following these explorations, the book reviews and compares the fundamentals of Islam with the radical ideology that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and others use as their touchstones to support their insurgency. Lastly, this book provides some recommendations for an updated U.S. strategy that will incorporate and address the ideological dimension of the war in Iraq. -- Amazon.
