Book excerpt: The western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) presents a major problem to farmers of fruiting vegetables by injuring fruits and vectoring Tomato spotted wilt virus. Attempts at controlling this species using calendar applications of broad-spectrum insecticides were ineffective. In contrast, ultra-violet reflective mulches effectively repel thrips and reduce the incidence of Tomato spotted wilt on tomatoes. Furthermore, combining multiple management tactics into a push-pull strategy is effective in other crop systems with other pests. The current study tested various combinations of ultraviolet reflective or black mulch, a kaolin clay spray, and companion plantings of Spanish needle (Bidens alba) and sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) for thrips management in tomatoes and peppers in Florida. Kaolin clay and ultra-violet reflective mulch both reduced thrips numbers on both crops and had a synergistic effect. Additionally, the planting of sunflowers as a companion plant increased thrips numbers on pepper plants, while Spanish needle reduced thrips numbers on tomatoes. Sunflowers attracted higher numbers of an effective predator (minute pirate bug, Orius insidiosus) to the fields than the crops alone. Companion plants of B. alba and ultraviolet-reflective mulch increased yield and decreased Tomato spotted wilt incidence on tomato. Ultraviolet-reflective mulch and kaolin increased yield of peppers. The results of the study show that these combinations can be successfully used as a push-pull method of thrips management in peppers and tomatoes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thrips (fhysanoptera) are very small insects, widespread throughout the world with a preponderance of tropical species, many temperate ones, and even a few living in arctic regions. Of the approximately 5,000 species so far identified, only a few hundred are crop pests, causing serious damage or transmitting diseases to growing crops and harvestable produce in most countries. Their fringed wings confer a natural ability to disperse widely, blown by the wind. Their minute size and cryptic behavior make them difficult to detect either in the field or in fresh vegetation transported during international trade of vegetables, fruit and ornamental flowers. Many species have now spread from their original natural habitats and hosts to favorable new environments where they often reproduce rapidly to develop intense damaging infestations that are costly to control. Over the past decade there have been several spectacular examples of this. The western flower thrips has expanded its range from the North American continent to Europe, Australia and South Africa. Thrips palmi has spread from its presumed origin, the island of Sumatra, to the coast of Florida, and threatens to extend its distribution throughout North and South America. Pear thrips, a known orchard pest of Europe and the western United States and Canada has recently become a major defoliator of hardwood trees in Vermont and the neighboring states. Local outbreaks of other species are also becoming problems in field and glasshouse crops as the effectiveness of insecticides against them decline.

Book excerpt: Peppermint, Mentha piperita 'Black Mitcham' was established as a host for tomato spotted wilt virus-impatiens serotype (TSWV-I). TSWV-I infection of peppermint, initially observed in a research greenhouse (Corvallis, OR), included stunting and downward curling of leaves accompanied by bronzing, and occasionally tip necrosis. Young leaves appeared either symptomless, deformed, or pale even under high nitrogen conditions. Older leaves had sunken, brownish-grey lesions. Bright yellow mottling was observed on newly mature deep green leaves. A begonia isolate of TSWV-I was transmitted to peppermint both mechanically and by western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). Symptoms of TSWV-I infection were similar although only a faint yellow mottling was produced and only under cool temperatures (15°C). ELISA detection of virus distribution throughout the plant indicated infection was systemic. Bulked groups of thrips (5 thrips/sample) also tested positive for TSWV-I using ELISA. Transmission efficiency of 4, 6, 8, and 10 day old thrips adults given acquisition sources during the entire nymphal stage varied from 0-40% for thrips tested in pairs and 0-20% for single thrips (based on a 12 hour access feeding period). Adults 2 days old failed to transmit the virus. Western flower thrips exposed to TSWV-I had reduced survival and reproductive potential and slower development rates than unexposed thrips. Virusexposed thrips were 1.4 times as likely to die than unexposed thrips on a given day. Both individual and population reproductive potentials were significantly lower. Preoviposition period was extended in virus-exposed thrips. Development time from second instar to adult was 15% longer for virus-exposed thrips. This is the first report of altered population parameters in western flower thrips exposed to TSWV-I.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to the application of new technologies such as whole-genome sequencing, analysis of transcriptome and proteome of insect pest to agriculture, great progress has been made in understanding the life style, reproduction, evolution and nuisance to crops caused by insect pests such as aphids, planthoppers, and whiteflies. We believe that time has come to summarize progress and to have a glance over the horizon. In this Book experts in the field discuss novel means to increase the different kinds of resistances of plants to better limit the effects of pest, to understand and disturb the hormonal regulation of embryogenesis, molting, metamorphosis and reproduction, to determine the function of insect genes in diverse processes such as metabolism, interaction with plants, virus transmission, development, and adaptation to a changing environment. The knowledge presented here is discussed with the aim of further improving control strategies of insect pestsman";mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi; mso-ansi-language:NL;mso-fareast-language:NL;mso-bidi-language:AR-SA">.
