This book was released on 2003 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment documents the current status of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in Canada's aquatic environment, based largely on scientific supporting documents to the Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines & with updated information & data wherever available. Chapters cover the following topics: physico-chemicals properties of PCDD/Fs and their mode of toxic action; sources (natural & anthropogenic) & releases of PCDD/Fs to the Canadian environment; fate & behaviour of PCDD/Fs in aquatic systems & biota; Canadian environmental levels of PCDD/Fs in air, water, sediment, & aquatic organisms; toxic effects of PCDD/Fs observed in aquatic & semi-aquatic organisms (including water-, sediment-, & dietary-based toxicity), and the initiatives under way to manage PCDD/Fs in the Canadian environment as well as best management practices. The final section discusses emerging issues such as recent advances in waste incineration, PCDD/F treatment in the pulp & paper industry, and use of biological screening in toxicity determination.

Book excerpt: "As part of the quality assurance program under the auspices of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), an interlaboratory comparison study (CP-4) for analysis of dioxins and furans in sediment extracts was designed and conducted by the Quality Assurance Group at the National Water Research Institute. Eight laboratories were sent five test samples. Each laboratory was requested to analyze 2,3,7,8-TCDD and 2,3,7,8-TCDF, and tetra-, penta-, hexa-, hept-, and octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans; each homologue group in total in all test samples. Surrogate recoveries were also requested. Seven out of eight laboratories submitted results"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This report describes the National Dioxin Interlaboratory Quality Control Study No. 2, the second in a series of intercomparison studies conducted by the Quality Assurance Group at the National Research Institute on the analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans in sediment. The study evaluated the quality and comparability of the data generated by commercial and government laboratories for the analysis of these compounds in naturally-contaminated freeze-dried and wet sediments. The analytical data submitted by 11 Canadian laboratories for the study were evaluated by various statistical treatments to identify outlying results and to assess laboratory performance for precision, accuracy, and bias. A comparison of different methodologies employed by the participants in the study is also presented.
