What precautions can we take to prevent another similar collapse from occurring again in the future? Each year, the Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers prepares a report presenting the Administration's domestic and international economic policies. Download or read book Administration and expenditure of the Chancellor's departments, 2008-09 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Treasury Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chancellor's departments faced extraordinary challenges during 2008-09, mainly arising from the need to respond to the emerging financial crisis and associated economic downturn. The report concludes that it is very difficult to draw final conclusions regarding their level of success - too much remains unfinished business. It draws attention, in particular, to the new relationship between the Treasury and UKFI, and recommends that the Government considers whether the formal terms of the relationship need some re-definition in the light of experience. The report is particularly concerned by the dire results for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) of a cross-Government staff survey pilot study. The Report calls for HMRC management to publish a clear and detailed plan to provide focus and direction to their efforts to re-engage with their workforce. Noting a rise in customer complaints and that, on average, only 57 per cent of calls to HMRC contact centres were answered during 2008-09. HMRC should publish more data to enable effective scrutiny of its performance against its targets, data which is essential for tax gaps to be closed and for the take up of the working tax credit to be assessed and improved. The Report is critical of the failure of most departments to provide accurate and timely monthly in-year figures to the Treasury. Other sections of the report cover National Savings & Investment, the revaluation of UK statutory ports and the performance of the Royal Mint.

Download or read book The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report written by Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report, published by the U.S. Government and the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in early 2011, is the official government report on the United States financial collapse and the review of major financial institutions that bankrupted and failed, or would have without help from the government. The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. The report details, among other things, the periods before, during, and after the crisis, what led up to it, and analyses of subprime mortgage lending, credit expansion and banking policies, the collapse of companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the federal bailouts of Lehman and AIG. It also discusses the aftermath of the fallout and our current state. This report should be of interest to anyone concerned about the financial situation in the U.S. and around the world.THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY COMMISSION is an independent, bi-partisan, government-appointed panel of 10 people that was created to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." It was established as part of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act of 2009. The commission consisted of private citizens with expertise in economics and finance, banking, housing, market regulation, and consumer protection. They examined and reported on "the collapse of major financial institutions that failed or would have failed if not for exceptional assistance from the government."News Dissector DANNY SCHECHTER is a journalist, blogger and filmmaker. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses key findings of the IMF staff report for Costa Rica for the Second Review Under the Stand-By Arrangement (SBA). Performance under the SBA has remained strong. All quantitative performance criteria for end-September were met, most with considerable margins. The authorities have continued to treat the SBA as precautionary. The outlook for a gradual recovery amid domestic and external stability remains the central scenario. Program risks have declined further and now appear broadly balanced. The main threat to the growth outlook is the possibility of a slower-than-expected global recovery.
Book Synopsis Renewable Fuels Agency 2008/09 annual report to Parliament on the renewable transport fuel obligation by : Renewable Fuels Agency
Download or read book Renewable Fuels Agency 2008/09 annual report to Parliament on the renewable transport fuel obligation written by Renewable Fuels Agency and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008/09, the first year of operation, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) met its objective of driving a market for biofuels in the UK. 2.7% of the UK's total road transport fuel supply was biofuel which was slightly over the Government's target of 2.5% and is more than twice the supply of biofuel in 2007/08/. No obligated suppliers pad to 'buy-out' of their obligations. The performance of suppliers in sourcing sustainable fuels was polarised. Whilst several companies met all three of the Government sourcing targets with fully verified data a number also performed poorly. Overall a significant improvement will be required to meet the challenges of the forthcoming EU Renewable Energy Directive. In 2008/09 there was also a 46% carbon saving against the Government target of 40%. The biofuels market has not as yet had a large impact on agriculture in the UK and although an effective driver of the market for biofuel, the RTFO did not, during 2008/09, drive increases in the biofuel production capacity in the UK.

Despite the macroeconomic environment, however, progress in alleviating poverty and meeting the MDGs has been slow. Executive Directors welcome the government’s intention to prepare a National Poverty Reduction Strategy. In the meantime, the budget process needs to be modified. The pegged exchange rate regime has served Equatorial Guinea well, providing an anchor to hold down inflation and a positive influence on investors’ confidence. The data provided by Equatorial Guinea are broadly adequate for surveillance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2009 Article IV Consultation highlights that India’s medium-term growth prospects remain bright. Prompt fiscal and monetary easing, combined with the fiscal stimulus already in the pipeline and the return of risk appetite in financial markets, have brought growth close to pre-crisis levels. Risks to a favorable outlook stem primarily from difficulties in implementing productivity-enhancing reforms and continued supply bottlenecks. Executive Directors have congratulated the authorities on their strong record of sound macroeconomic policies and decisive actions leading to India’s early and vigorous recovery from the global crisis.
Book Synopsis Belgium by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Belgium written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After being hit by a severe recession in 2008–09, the Belgian economy is gradually recovering. When core inflation remained subdued in 2010, headline inflation jumped up due to the energy price hike. The growth of potential output is expected to revert to its declining trend over the medium term. Building upon the encouraging 2010 fiscal outcome, the caretaker government is preparing a draft federal budget for 2011. To reduce the overall deficit to 3 percent of GDP by 2012, significant additional tightening measures will be needed.
