Book Synopsis Quality Assurance in Higher Education by : David Lim
Download or read book Quality Assurance in Higher Education written by David Lim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Universities in developing countries have followed their counterparts in developed countries and adopted quality assurance to improve the quality of their activities. This text examines the wisdom of such a move when many of the conditions necessary for its success are not present. It concludes that quality assurance can be useful in developing countries because it shows how a university's seemingly disparate activities are related to one another to serve a common goal and how the quality of these can best be improved by using an integrated approach. Quality assurance also provides more focus and direction to the work of the traditional university system. However, it must be modified to suit the conditions prevailing in developing countries by being simple in design, modest in expectations and realistic in requirements.

Amid debates about the future of both higher education and Europeanisation, this book is the first full-length exploration of how Europe’s 35 million students are understood by key social actors across different nations. The various chapters compare and contrast conceptualisations in six nations, held by policymakers, higher education staff, media and students themselves. With an emphasis on students’ lived experiences, the authors provide new perspectives about how students are understood, and the extent to which European higher education is homogenising. They explore various prominent constructions of students – including as citizens, enthusiastic learners, future workers and objects of criticism.
Book Synopsis Evaluating and financing university research by : Silvia Zanazzi
Download or read book Evaluating and financing university research written by Silvia Zanazzi and published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. - The research project focuses on the evaluation of university research, at a moment when a central issue in the political and economic debate is the distribution of public resources based on criteria of efficiency and merit. Five universities in European countries are analyzed and compared, and the perceptions held by the researchers in those countries about evaluation systems are assessed through a survey. The study aims to demonstrate that a rigorous system of research evaluation is a necessary, though insufficient, condition to create an increase in the quality of university research. In our country, what is needed is the enactment of public policies supporting research, beginning with a more adequate economic investment.

Book Synopsis Research Assessment in the Humanities by : Michael Ochsner
Download or read book Research Assessment in the Humanities written by Michael Ochsner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses and discusses the recent developments for assessing research quality in the humanities and related fields in the social sciences. Research assessments in the humanities are highly controversial and the evaluation of humanities research is delicate. While citation-based research performance indicators are widely used in the natural and life sciences, quantitative measures for research performance meet strong opposition in the humanities. This volume combines the presentation of state-of-the-art projects on research assessments in the humanities by humanities scholars themselves with a description of the evaluation of humanities research in practice presented by research funders. Bibliometric issues concerning humanities research complete the exhaustive analysis of humanities research assessment. The selection of authors is well-balanced between humanities scholars, research funders, and researchers on higher education. Hence, the edited volume succeeds in painting a comprehensive picture of research evaluation in the humanities. This book is valuable to university and science policy makers, university administrators, research evaluators, bibliometricians as well as humanities scholars who seek expert knowledge in research evaluation in the humanities.
Book Synopsis Autonomy in Education by : Walter Berka
Download or read book Autonomy in Education written by Walter Berka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The push towards greater autonomy is one of the three main trends in every modern educational policy, alongside quality assurance and quality evaluation techniques and the need to devote attention to special — and often disadvantaged — target groups. It is, however, difficult to derive a unified concept of `autonomy’ from the comparative indicators which are published on a regular basis and it has emerged that there are significant differences depending on the specific area and the administrative organisation of education in the country in question. During the discussions of the annual Congress of the European Association for Education Law and Policy (ELA) in Salzburg (1998) it was apparent that autonomy has to be considered in its various applications. Autonomy for school boards is realised through management, administrative mechanisms, management of staff and pedagogical options. Autonomy of administration requires competence, the willingness to establish an autonomous administration and awareness of each party’s responsibility in the educational process. The contents of this Yearbook are an answer to the question of how legislatures are responding to the trend towards greater responsibility, decentralisation and autonomy. It is an overview of the efforts made by the Member States of the European Union to apply the principle of subsidiarity.
