Book excerpt: Richard Marquis has had an extraordinary influence on the development of contemporary studio glass in America and around the world. Studying at the University of California at Berkeley during the 1960s, he explored ceramics and was introduced to glassblowing. Unsatisfied by the limited techniques practiced in American studio glass at that time, Marquis went to the island of Murano, near Venice, to observe and work with the masters of a glassblowing tradition acknowledged as the best in the world. Freely sharing the techniques he learned in Venice, Marquis has demonstrated and taught throughout the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The effect of Venetian glassblowing techniques on American studio glass enabled glass artists to expand their technical vocabularies and, combined with new and experimental approaches, led to the redefinition of glass as an artistic medium. As an artist, Marquis is admired for his sophisticated understanding of color and form as much as for his humor and willingness to experiment. As a glassblower, he has influenced an entire generation of artists working in glass who aspire to his technical mastery and the originality of his voice. He lives on an island in Puget Sound.

Book excerpt: This exhibition brings together the work of twelve artists from the United States and Canada who undermine the decorative and comfortable domesticity usually associated with crafts. Though crafts have too often been considered the stepchildren of the more intellectual and elevated “Fine Arts”, these subversive crafts people acknowledge the realm of the familiar and homey everyday object as a powerful milieu to provide an intimate, experiential and incisive commentary on the emotive conditions of contemporary life. Artists: Laura Baird, Kate Boyan, Lou Cabeen, Nancy Edell, John Garret, Anne Kraus, Keith Lewis, Paul Mathieu, Matt Nolen, Richard Notkin, Leslie Sampson, Jane Sauer, Joyce Scott, Barbara Todd, and Lillian Tyrell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beautifully designed and carefully curated, a fascinating collection of the things that shaped the way we live and play in America What artifact best captures the spirit of American sports? The bat Babe Ruth used to hit his allegedly called shot, or the ball on which Pete Rose wrote, "I'm sorry I bet on baseball"? Could it be Lance Armstrong's red-white-and-blue bike, now tarnished by doping and hubris? Or perhaps its ancestor, the nineteenth-century safety bicycle that opened an avenue of previously unknown freedom to women? The jerseys of rivals Larry Bird and Magic Johnson? Or the handball that Abraham Lincoln threw against a wall as he waited for news of his presidential nomination? From nearly forgotten heroes like Tad Lucas (rodeo) and Tommy Kono (weightlifting) to celebrities like Amelia Earhart, Muhammad Ali, and Michael Phelps, Cait Murphy tells the stories of the people, events, and things that have forged the epic of American sports, in both its splendor and its squalor. Stories of heroism and triumph rub up against tales of discrimination and cheating. These objects tell much more than just stories about great games-they tell the story of the nation. Eye-opening and exuberant, A History of American Sports in 100 Objects shows how the games Americans play are woven into the gloriously infuriating fabric of America itself.
