During the last week of October 1997, the Antarctic paper charts were replaced by digital charts in a Graphics Interface Format (GIF). Printouts of the digital GIF charts for all Antarctic regions are contained in Supplement 1 to the "Antarctic Sea Ice Atlas". Future annual atlases will be available in a digital format on CD-ROM though the national Snow and Ice Date Center (http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu). NSIDC is the official archive center for the NIC. The NIC uses a wide variety of data sources in the production of sea ice analyses. The line types used in the analyses provide metadata information with regard to sensor type. Solid lines depict boundaries derived from: point observations, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Line Scan (DMSP OLS) and NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. Dash-dash-dotted line depicts boundaries derived from DMSP Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), and dashed lines depict boundaries derived from forecast models and climatology.

These data were further restricted to relatively small areas observed primarily during the summer resupply season. Since the advent of all weather passive microwave satellite imagery, it has been possible to routinely map the extent of Antartic sea ice on a global scale. Antarctic sea ice analyses have been operationally produced on a weekly basis since 1973. This atlas contains sea ice summaries derived from 521 weekly JIC (Navy/NOAA Joint Ice Center) sea ice analyses produced from 1973 to 1982. Chart and data coverage includes: Maximum/Mean/Minimum Ice Edges; Probability of Occurrence of Any Ice; Mean Ice Concentration; Mean Ice Concentration When Ice is Present; Maximum/Mean/Minimum Extent of 5/10ths or More Ice; Weekly Total Coverage and Extent; Time Series of Weekly Total Coverage and Extent; and Semi-Monthly Coverage and Extent Statistics.

Book excerpt: Satellite multichannel passive-microwave sensors have provided global radiance measurements with which to map, monitor, and study the Arctic and Antarctic polar sea ice covers. The data span over 18 years (as of April 1997), starting with the launch of the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) on NASA's SeaSat A and Nimbus 7 in 1978 and continuing with the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSMI) series beginning in 1987. It is anticipated that the DMSP SSMI series will continue into the 21st century. The SSMI series will be augmented by new, improved sensors to be flown on Japanese and U.S. space platforms. This User's Guide provides a description of a new sea ice concentration data set generated from observations made by three of these multichannel sensors. The data set includes gridded daily ice concentrations (every-other-day for the SMMR data) for both the north and south polar regions from October 26, 1978 through September 30, 1995, with the one exception of a 6-week data gap from December 3, 1987 through January 12, 1988. The data have been placed on two CD-ROMs that include a ReadMeCD file giving the technical details on the file format, file headers, north and south polar grids, ancillary data sets, and directory structure of the CD-ROM. Book excerpt: Data from the Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR) on the Nimbus 5 satellite are used to determine the extent and distribution of Antarctic sea ice. The characteristics of the southern ocean, the mathematical formulas used to obtain quantitative sea ice concentrations, the general characteristics of the seasonal sea ice growth/decay cycle and regional differences, and the observed seasonal growth/decay cycle for individual years and interannual variations of the ice cover are discussed. The sea ice data from the ESMR are presented in the form of color-coded maps of the Antarctic and the southern oceans. The maps show brightness temperatures and concentrations of pack ice averaged for each month, 4-year monthly averages, and month-to-month changes. Graphs summarizing the results, such as areas of sea ice as a function of time in the various sectors of the southern ocean are included. The images demonstrate that satellite microwave data provide unique information on large-scale sea ice conditions for determining climatic conditions in polar regions and possible global climatic changes.
