Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Resource Production From Usda Forest Service Northern and Intermountain Region Lands This paper presents the long-term data series of timber production and grazing for Regions 1 and 4. Additionally, lumber production and price by dominant species and harvest levels by ownership for Montana and Idaho are presented. Much of the data comes from archived data from Region 1 headquarters in Missoula, Montana, and Region 4 headquarters in Ogden, Utah. Additional sources include usda Forest Service publications, university publications, and industrial organization newsletters. The National Forests of Regions 1 and 4 are a defining feature of the intermountain West. Much of the area is rural, with many small and medium-size communities dependent on National Forests for a large portion of their economic base. The National Forests provide timber, grazing, mineral resources, tourism, and recreation. Conflict ing uses of the National Forest are currently receiving much public attention. David calkin is a graduate student in forest economics, Department of Forest Resources, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97333.this work is the result of cooperation among the Pacific Northwest Research Station, Oregon State University, and the University of Montana. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress in Forest Pest Control: A Documentary Report of 1961 Accomplishments Under the Forest Pest Control Act on the National Forests of Nevada, Southern Idaho, Utah, and Western Wyoming Pest control is a major concern. It extends its activities through all the seasons, to all land ownerships-federal, state, and private, and onto the most rugged forest terrain. It exacts painstaking effort under the most trying of conditions. It requires a close union of the scientist and land manager, and demands close cooperative working relationships. But it is a gratifying task because the resources saved and protected are indispensable to our way of life. Through experience and advanced knowledge, the complex job of forest pest con trol is made safer, more efficient, and less costly. The result accrues as an improvement to our economy, extending protection over our wealth of renewable forest resources plus the less measurable esthetic and recreational values in herent in forest lands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tenderfoot Days in Territorial Utah This book is neither a History nor a Topography of the Territory of Utah in the early seventies of the last century. The volume is due to the experiences of an outsider who tried to be impartial in his views and sympathies. The personal note, of course, rings in this record of those past days. No onslaught is made on the "wild and woolly" west, nor on the eccentric religion of the majority of the people. Through much peril and privation, the wild wastes of the Territory had been occupied by a people whose hard toil had redeemed the desert. The picture of life presented in these pages is in accord with the facts, the only changes made are in the names of some of the characters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proposed Natural Resources Management Plan and Environmental Assessment: Lehman Caves, National Monument, Nevada Soils on monument lands support native pinyon pine and Utah juniper; an inventory of major soils is proposed to provide an informed basis for vegetation management. The soil mantle is thin, overlying rocks and glacial moraine boulders of unknown depths. Approximately two-thirds of the monument rests on an alluvial plain, which dips from west to east 500 feet per mile. The remaining one-third is composed of low limestone and granite ridges rising less than 500 feet above their surroundings, but which culminate outside the monument in the summit area of Wheeler Peak at an elevation of l3,000 feet. Biologic communities at Lehman Caves have not been adequately surveyed. A flora checklist is completed but information on community structure and succession patterns is needed. Future resource management actions require an informed basis: the role of fire and the extent of forest disease or infestation have not been investigated. At present, park management relies on Forest Service data applying to larger surrounding areas of Humboldt National Forest. A detailed survey of local plant ecology on the fringes of the national forest would augment resources management to standard.
