Book Synopsis Forestry and Environmental Change by : John L. Innes
Download or read book Forestry and Environmental Change written by John L. Innes and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable emphasis has been placed on the interactions between environmental change and forests in recent years. Reports have been produced detailing scenarios of forest development associated with particular changes in climate. Similarly, scenarios have been produced looking at likely trends in air quality. However, many studies have failed to recognize that some of the biggest changes for forests are related to the socioeconomicenvironment rather that the physical environment. This book considers the interactions between forestry and environmental (climatic) change, from social and economic perspectives.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the contending views of the uses of Solomon Island forest. Ranging from an examination of the interaction between the first settlers and their forest, the book goes on to analyse the attitudes of the British administrators, planters, and missionaries. The colonial government sought to protect the resource, but neglected to consider the wishes of the forest’s inhabitants in planning for its future economic use. The independent governments failed to protect the dwindling forest on customary land in the face of accelerating demands from their own people and of Asian-based logging companies, while non-governmental organisations and aid-donors have tried to invoke a more conservative regime of forest use.

Book Synopsis A Burning Issue by : Robert Henry Nelson
Download or read book A Burning Issue written by Robert Henry Nelson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Created in the early 20th century to provide scientific management of the nation's forests, the U.S. Forest Service was, for many years, regarded as a model agency in the federal government. The author contends that this reputation is undeserved and the Forest Service's performance today is unacceptable. Not only has scientific management proven impossible in practice, it is also objectionable in principle. Furthermore, the author argues that the Forest Service lacks a coherent vision and prefers to sponsor only fashionable environmental solutions--most recently ecosystem management. Describing its history and failures, the author advocates replacing the service with a decentralized system to manage the protection of national forests.
