Book excerpt: The most pressing problem for most developing countries is how to reverse the adverse trends of the 1980s and create the conditions for sustainable development. The contributors to this volume bring a great variety of experience, background and interest to bear on this issue. Considerable attention is given to the design of appropriate structural adjustment programmes and the role of debt reduction, food aid and the European Community in this context. The need for an adaptive evolutionary approach to problems of development is, perhaps, the central theme to the volume.

Book excerpt: First in a series of annual reports, this volume is about people and about how development enlarges their choices--access to income, long life, knowledge, political freedom, personal security, community participation, and guaranteed human rights. It measures human development not by the yardstick of income alone, but by the human development index--reflecting life expectancy, literacy and command over resources to enjoy a decent standard of living. The report analyzes the record of human development for the last three decades and the experience of 14 countries in managing economic growth and human development. The volume concludes with human development indicators for more than 130 countries, both developing and developed. ISBN 0-19-306481-X (pbk.): $15.95.
Book Synopsis Population — Development — Environment by : J. Baguant
Download or read book Population — Development — Environment written by J. Baguant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the number of options is often limited, small island states tend to find it uncommonly difficult to strike a balance between population, envi ronment, and development. Relatively high population density and small land areas, without much in the way of natural resources, do not provide the best of circumstances for improving the living conditions of the popu lation, especially a fast-growing one. The result is often stunted economic development and environmental stress both on land and offshore. The developments in the island state of Mauritius over the past 30 years, however, can serve as an inspiration and illustration of how extremely ad verse conditions can be overcome. In the early 1960s Mauritius was trying to cope with rapid population growth, extreme poverty, and grim economic 2 prospects. Population density was 324 inhabitants per km , total fertility was 5.7, and GNP per capita was less than $200. In 1990 the situation in Mauritius was radically different. Although 2 population density had increased to 527 inhabitants per km , total fertility had dropped to 2.0, and GNP per capita had increased to $2,310. Economic stagnation had been replaced by steady growth and full employment, and environmental problems were being addressed as issues of high priority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the design of adjustment policies in the latter part of the 1980s has generally shown greater attention to their impact on growth and social implications, this book argues that several orthodox adjustment policies are still incongruent with long-term development in Africa. Book Synopsis Third World Education by : Anthony R. Welch
Download or read book Third World Education written by Anthony R. Welch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-05-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book debunks the argument that quality in education can only be achieved by limiting, or trading off, equality. The quality of schooling is a major issue for Third World nations across the globe. However there is no single measure which is universally accepted. Whether it is, as some economists might argue, an issue of the number of desks per classroom or one of national sovereignty is widely disputed. Defining equality in education becomes increasingly difficult in an era of globalization in which there exists a wide gap between rich and poor, both within and between nations. In the context of an international move towards New Right politics and neo-liberal economic ideologies, both the quality and equality of education are imperiled. This book argues that any worthy definition of quality education must include the interests and participation of the underprivileged.

Book Synopsis Decentralization and Economic Development in Nigeria by : Nwafejoku Okolie Uwadibie
Download or read book Decentralization and Economic Development in Nigeria written by Nwafejoku Okolie Uwadibie and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book of its kind to address the effect of agricultural decentralization on the Nigerian national economy. In his effort to demonstrate how decentralization promotes development that can economically empower individuals, Uwadibie thoroughly analyzes three key aspects of Nigeria's decentralization policy. These are the Local Government Reform Act of 1976, the creation of new states, and the implementation of the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP). Together, these policies reduced the overall role of the federal government in the national economy by diverting revenue to states and dissolving the federal government's direct ownership of agricultural enterprises. Based on his extensive research, Uwadibie concludes by making a number of additional policy recommendations that he believes are essential for Nigeria to become self-sufficient in food production. Those with an interest in African studies, economic development, or agricultural production will find much to their liking in this work.
